Condolences are conveyed to the family of a female toddler sadly deceased following a fatal drowning accident.
At 14h50, Friday, 27 February, NSRI Witsand duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress approximately 20 kilometers upstream from the Breede River Mouth.
NSRI Witsand crew responded to the NSRI Witsand station 33 rescue base and launched the NSRI rescue craft JetRIB.
WC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services were activated.
On arrival on the scene NSRI Witsand crew found locals performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts on a 3 year old female child.
NSRI medics assisted with CPR efforts and were joined by EMS paramedics but sadly, after all extensive CPR efforts were exhausted, the toddler was declared deceased by paramedics.
The body of the deceased child has been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an Inquest docket.
It appears that the child was found floating lifeless in the water before being rescued by family members.
The family are from Malawi.
Local community members initiated CPR while raising the alarm.
