Four of five top South African banks have reduced their branch footprints substantially over the past decade, while one has significantly expanded its branch network over the same period.
Absa, FNB, Nedbank, and Standard Bank have significantly reduced their branch numbers over the past decade, with Nedbank shutting down the most branches at 194.
The bank had 708 branches in South Africa as of 31 December 2015, and the figure had plummeted to 514 branches by 30 June 2025.
