The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is deeply concerned about the 2024/25 report by the Auditor-General (AG), which lays bare the collapse of financial management, service delivery and accountability under the current ANC/ActionSA/EFF coalition in Tshwane.
The report highlights:
- Incorrect asset valuation leading to inflated financial statements.
- Understatement of contingent liabilities by more than R4,3 billion.
- Inadequate consequence management, allowing irregularities to go unpunished.
- Weak internal controls and processes that undermine accountability.
The chairperson of the Audit and Risk Committee emphasised that poor procurement management and the absence of proper control systems severely compromise the Metro’s financial discipline and transparency, while increasing the risk of corruption.
Equally disturbing is the decline in basic service delivery:
- Illegal electricity connections, cable theft and substation vandalism leave residents without reliable power supply in addition to reducing revenue.
- Water leaks and sanitation backlogs mean that informal settlements remain dependent on chemical toilets.
- Housing delays and title deed backlogs leave thousands of families without secure housing.
- Illegal dumping and poor waste management coupled with inadequate law enforcement.
In just nine months, the current coalition has undone all the progress made by the previous multiparty government, of which the Freedom Front Plus was part.
There is very little to no consequence management and accountability, while senior management is under pressure to align with the coalition’s political agenda – a step that further undermines professional independence.
Another major source of concern is the coalition’s decision to earmark R2 billion for salary increases and back payments without first testing it in the Labour Court – as the previous coalition did.
This reckless step places an unsustainable burden on the Metro’s finances and will probably result in an even more devastating AG report in the next financial year.
Tshwane Metro residents deserve a government that safeguards their interests, not one that covers up maladministration and corruption.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep fighting for clean governance, consistent accountability and transparent management of public funds. The current decline is unacceptable, and the Freedom Front Plus will not allow Tshwane to deteriorate any further.
In the upcoming local government elections, residents have the power to elect reliable parties with a proven record of clean and fair governance, such as the Freedom Front Plus.
Freedom Front Plus Political Accountability: The party calls for accountability from elected officials.
