Two exciting ballet productions, filmed live on the Paris Opera Ballet stage, will be screened at select Ster-Kinekor and Cinema Nouveau theatres during February and March. Cinema audiences and ballet lovers alike will be treated to two spectacular productions from the Paris Opera, bringing the best of its ballet repertoire to the big screen.
Meet the vengeful spirits in Giselle, with choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, adapted by Patrice Bart and Eugène Polyakov, screening on 28 February, 1 and 3 March. The second ballet follows romantic intrigues within the garden of Versailles, with choreographer Angelin Preljocaj’s Le Parc on 21, 22 and 24 March, for three screenings each.
“With these productions showing on our cinema screens, local audiences get the opportunity to experience two beautiful ballets in a theatre-like setting, as an extension of the live production’s audience. Giselle is a ballet in two acts that follows the charming peasant girl Giselle who loves Albrecht who, beneath his modest clothing, is a duke. When she discovers that he cannot marry her because he is already engaged, Giselle goes mad and dies. She is then taken in by the vengeful Wilis, the souls of young girls abandoned by unfaithful lovers. Will Giselle choose to punish or forgive?
First performed in 1841 at the Royal Academy of Music (former Paris Opera), Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli’s ballet – here adapted by Patrice Bart and Eugène Polyakov – introduced a new aesthetic in the history of Western dance. Pointe shoes, arabesques and long white tutus evoke a fantastical, vaporous universe that has become the very embodiment of Romanticism.
The cast includes Dorothée Gilbert, Étoile (Giselle), Mathieu Ganio, Étoile (Albrecht), Valentine Colasante, Étoile (Myrtha), Audric Bezard, Premier Danseur (Hilarion), Paris Opera Premiers Danseurs and Corps de Ballet. The Pasdeloup Orchestra, conducted by Koen Kessels, performs the music by Adolphe Adam. The ballet’s duration is 1h46, without intermission.

Le Parc takes place in a French-style garden, where four modern Cupids set the pace for romantic conquests. People seek each other out, flirt, observe each other, desire each other, refuse each other, but pride eventually gives way, releasing passions that have been repressed for too long.
‘What is love today?’ asked Angelin Preljocaj in 1994, when he created the ballet for the Paris Opera. Thirty years later, the world has continued to change, but his ageless ballet has travelled the globe. The final pas de deux, where the bodies whirl around for a languorous kiss, presents a moment of grace that has become the signature of this ballet.
The cast includes Alice Renavand, Étoile, Mathieu Ganio, Étoile, and the Paris Opera Corps de Ballet. The music, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is performed by the Paris Opera Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Shwartz, with Elena Bonnay on piano. Le Parc is a ballet in three acts with an epilogue, and the duration is 1h33 without intermission.
