Unsafe “Pothole Repairs” in Ermelo Shines Spotlight on Msukaligwa’s Decline

The dangerous situation in Camden Avenue in Ermelo, where two members of the public attempted to fill potholes with sand and placed building rubble on the road surface in order to “regulate” traffic in exchange for money, is a direct consequence of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s systemic failure to provide proper service delivery.

The situation was life-threatening for motorists, exacerbated by the suspicion that the individuals in question were under the influence of intoxicating substances. The rubble on the road also created a severe hazard.

The police were called in and the individuals were removed from the scene.

Camden Avenue, a critical link to the N17 and Morgenzon, is deteriorating owing to a lack of maintenance and unregulated use by heavy vehicles.

Despite numerous demands by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) for stringent action to be taken against trucks using Camden Avenue and deviating from designated routes, the ANC-controlled municipal administration refuses to accept any responsibility.

The Freedom Front Plus’s motion tabled to the Municipal Council on 11 December 2025 regarding the administration’s failure to respond to questions relating to the issue was rejected by the ANC with the claim that service delivery is up to standard.

The reality at grass-roots level is a different story, though. Roads are unsafe, trucks drive wherever they wish and opportunists exploit the poor road conditions to harass motorists.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep holding the Metro accountable for the collapse of infrastructure.

It is more important than ever for residents to support the Freedom Front Plus in the upcoming municipal elections, as the party prioritises infrastructure maintenance and public safety.
