Urgent Intervention Needed in Eskom Distribution Areas in Cape Town

Prolonged power outages in areas supplied with electricity by Eskom in the City of Cape Town have developed into a serious crisis for residents.

Hundreds of households have been without electricity for weeks and even months. The outages have resulted in major losses with food spoiling, medical supplies becoming unusable and families having to manage in the dark.

In Blackheath, a diabetic mother had to be admitted to hospital after she could not refrigerate her insulin. In Joostenberg Vlakte, residents were told that there are more than 600 complaints in the area and that they will have to wait patiently.

Eskom currently supplies only 25% to 30% of the Metro’s households with electricity, while the City of Cape Town’s Energy Directorate serves the remaining 70% to 75%.

The City is, however, prohibited from doing repairs in Eskom-supplied areas by NERSA’s licensed distribution boundaries.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has already sent a formal letter to Eskom’s management regarding the approximately 40 households that currently have no power. These families include elderly people, babies and sick individuals who are particularly vulnerable and cannot manage without electricity.

If Eskom is unable to resolve the crisis, the City’s Energy Directorate should be allowed to repair and maintain power infrastructure in Eskom-supplied areas.

The current situation is unsustainable. Thousands of residents are living without basic services, with no compensation for the losses they are suffering.

Previous attempts to find a solution have yielded no meaningful results.

And so far, neither the Mayoral Committee Member for Energy nor the Mayor has taken any tangible steps to proceed with legal action after Eskom rejected the City’s previous proposals.

The Freedom Front Plus, therefore, implores both Eskom and the City of Cape Town to convene an emergency meeting as soon as possible and find a sustainable solution to this ongoing crisis.
