The Electoral Commission of South Africa has invited all citizens, voters, political parties and stakeholders to participate in the national dialogue on the potential implementation of electronic voting systems in our electoral processes.
“The idea is that once a Digital ID system is implemented by DA minister Leon Schreiber, voter fraud will no longer be possible, because every voter need just present their fingerprint. And then of course, the IEC need not employ people to count physical ballots, because a computer will do it.”
However, this means the government will have a record of who voted in what way, and manipulation of results becomes a possibility through voter suppression or vote rigging.
KEY CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDE:
- Security and Trust
- Access for All South Africans
- Practical Implementation
- Transparency
- Legal Requirements
- Voter and Staff Preparation
- Privacy and Data Protection
- Infrastructure Needs
With the full backing of Leon Schreiber, DA minister for the Department of Home Affairs, there is unlikely to be any meaningful opposition without public pressure.
