Nic Stevens, NSRI Mykonos station commander, said: At 11h45, Saturday, 4 April, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a boat capsized in the surf zone at Spreeuwalle, Paradise Beach, near to Langebaan in Saldanha Bay.
It was reported that West Coast Medical Rescue were on the scene attending to 2 patients, ages 57 and 15, males, injured on the shore where their boat had capsized in the surf zone.
Our NSRI rescue vehicle responded and on arrival on the scene we assisted West Coast Medical Rescue paramedics and both patients were medically stabilised before being transported to hospital by West Coast Medical Rescue ambulance, the teenager in a serious but stable condition and the adult in a stable condition.
NSRI St Helena Bay dispatched their rescue vehicle and assisted at the scene at Spreeuwalle, Paradise Beach.
On Sunday, 5 April, at approximately 10h30, while conducting routine training, we assisted a RHIB (rigid hull inflatable boat), with 5 crew onboard, males and females, at Sandbaai, after finding the 5 crew rowing their boat, that had suffered motor mechanical failure, towards the Alabama slipway, Saldanha Bay.
Happy to assist them we established a towline from our rescue craft Rotarian Burnett and we safely towed their craft to the Alabama slipway without incident and they recovered their craft requiring no further assistance.
Then at 13h00 we assisted a jet-ski 2 nautical miles offshore of Mykonos.
The jet-ski had suffered motor mechanical failure. A Langebaan jet-ski operator contacted NSRI requesting NSRI’s assistance.
We diverted our rescue craft Rotarian Burnett, that was nearby conducting routine training at the time, and on reaching the jet-ski we established a towline and towed the male and his jet-ski to Mykonos Marina without incident.
The jet-ski was recovered and no further assistance was required.
