Yup, SA Still has Schools With Pit Toilets

19 July 2023 by Guest

Today the DA will start to conduct a series of oversights to various schools in the provinces that are still forced to use dangerous pit toilets, a decade after the Minimum Norms and Standards were first gazetted.

Despite the Department of Basic Education (DBE) launching two programmes to eradicated pit toilets and other unsafe infrastructure from schools – the Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) in 2010 and the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) Initiative in 2018 – and creating very specific deadlines for eradication, these are just some of the 5 201 schools that still have pit toilets and the 908 schools still in the SAFE programme.

The oversights seek to highlight the plight of the learners, teachers and staff at schools in the Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the North West and KwaZulu-Natal.

Learners and educators deserve a safe and dignified environment that is conducive to learning and teaching, not empty promises and continuously missed deadlines.
