Junre Marais, NSRI Yzerfontein station commander, said: On Saturday, 6 April, at 12h17, NSRI Yzerfontein, in cooperation with the emergency services, assisted West Coast Medical ambulance services at an incident on 16 Mile Beach, North of Yzerfontein, where a female was injured after being dismounted while riding a horse on the beach.
NSRI Yzerfontein were at that time on the water conducting routine training.
NSRI crew were brought to shore and while WC Government Health EMS were alerted to the incident the NSRI Yzerfontein rescue vehicle responded to the scene along the beach.
Our NSRI rescue craft Sonja and Spirit of DHL II responded by sea – the rescue craft Sonja beached, bringing additional NSRI rescue crew to the scene to assist, while the rescue craft Spirit of DHL II remained at the backline on stand-by if needed.
EMS paramedics and West Coast Medical paramedics, assisted by our NSRI Yzerfontein rescue crew, treated the 30 year old female, from Kraaifontein, who had suffered serious injuries in a fall from a horse while riding on the beach.
She was accompanied by family members, including her sister who is a paramedic.
NSRI are informed that the horse was not injured in the incident and was taken to safety.
A Netcare 911 HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) helicopter had been activated and on their arrival on the scene an LZ (Landing Zone) had been prepared for them on the beach.
The Netrcare 911 helicopter landed on the beach.
The patient, secured into a stretcher and in the care of Netcare 911 paramedics, was airlifted to hospital by the Netcare 911 helicopter, in a serious but stable condition.
The patient is expected to fully recover.

Kristo Kritzinger, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, said: On Saturday, 14 April, at 16h36, NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a horse rider injured in a fall on the sea side across of Kabeljous lagoon.
Our NSRI rescue vehicle responded while Gardmed ambulance services were activated.
NSRI rescue crew and NSRI medics reached the patient, a 38 year old female, on a holiday from the United Kingdom, who was in a stable condition but injured from a fall from a horse while riding on the beach.
The patient was found in the care of fishermen on the beach. They had been nearby at the time and they had come to her aid and raised the alarm.
The patient was treated on the scene by our NSRI medics and then ferried along the beach (using our NSRI rescue vehicle) to the ambulance that was standing by at the car park.
The patient was transported to hospital in a stable condition by Gardmed ambulance in the care of Gardmed paramedics.
NSRI are informed that the patient is recovering and the family are departing for home on Friday as scheduled.
