The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) strongly condemns the terror attack today at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

The attack, shortly before Christmas, was not only an assault on the Jewish community, but also on a global value system grounded in freedom, democracy and human rights – a system that poses a threat to radical Islam worldwide.

Eleven people, including one attacker, were killed in the attack and several seriously injured. According to media reports, the attack targeted Jews celebrating their sacred Hanukkah or Festival of Lights.

The festival is a Jewish celebration that spans eight days, commemorating the rededication of the Temple or the preservation of the Jewish faith and culture.

A major cause of concern for the Freedom Front Plus is the growing influence of radical elements worldwide that seek to impose their own values and beliefs on others and – as this attack demonstrates – will not hesitate to use violence to create a climate of fear.

In South Africa, it is obvious and worrying that the ANC’s close ties with Palestine and Iran also reflect an uncomfortable resentment towards Jews and Israel.

This uncompromising stance will only contribute to further polarising South Africa’s own society, which is absolutely unnecessary seeing as the country is already embroiled in an internal economic fight for survival.

The Freedom Front Plus genuinely sympathises with the victims of the attack and their next of kin.

In this Christian festive season of reconciliation and peace, the party appeals to peace-loving people of all religions to strive for a society that is inclusive, peaceful and grounded in shared human values.

South Africa will have to seriously engage in a constructive dialogue on how to counter the threat of extremism in order to protect the country’s own diversity and freedom.
