Bursaries open for application, for the 2024 academic year

As the opening of the 2024 academic year approaches, many prospective tertiary students find themselves without the means to afford their studies. As the last Nelson Mandela once said, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, but how does one afford to educate themselves with the high price …

As the opening of the 2024 academic year approaches, many prospective tertiary students find themselves without the means to afford their studies. As the last Nelson Mandela once said, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, but how does one afford to educate themselves with the high price of university fees? The reply is, bursaries!

Bursaries are awarded based on academic merit (to students who perform exceptionally well), or based on financial need (from a disadvantaged background). Most bursaries cover every study related expenses, including tuition fees; textbooks; accommodation; meals and a living allowance.

If you are a student still in need of funding for the 2024 academic year, here are some options for you:

1. Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) Leadership Programme
The Ashinaga Africa Initiative is a scholarship for students from Sub-Saharan African countries, who maintain lost 1 or both parents. Funding will be awarded for studying abroad, towards an undergraduate qualification in any field.

2. PPS Foundation Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded for degree studies within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields, which are scarce and critical sectors in the country. Bursaries are also available for studies within the Humanities field.

3. Omnia Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded for studies towards STEM-related qualifications, at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

4. Mercedes-Benz Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded to academically deserving candidates, for studies within the following fields: Business Studies, Computer Engineering / Information Technology / Software Development, Electrical Engineering / Industrial Engineering / Mechanical Engineering, Finance / Accounting, Human Resources, Law, Supply Chain / Logistics
Closing date: 26 January 2024.

5. Food for Mzansi Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded to 20 deserving students, for studies towards a 2 year agriculture-related qualification. Students will acquire the opportunity to pick one of the following three National Diploma study programmes: Agri Sales and Service / Animal Production / Plant Production.

6. Gibela Bursary

Bursaries will be awarded for studies at University, University of Technology and TVET College, within the following fields:
• TVET College: Boiler-makers, Control and instrumentation technicians, Electricians, Fitters and Turners, Mechanics, Millwrights, Pattern-makers, Plumbers, Vehicle-builders, Welders
• University and University of Technology: Accounting, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Information Technology, Logistics Management, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Supply Chain.
Closing date: 2 February 2024.

7. Fermel Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, wanting to pursue a career within the Mining industry. The bursary will cover studies within Engineering and Science fields.

8. Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) Bursary
The GCRA bursary will be awarded to students residing in Gauteng, for Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies in ANY field.
