Cabinet congratulates Botswana, Mozambique and the USA

Cabinet has extended its congratulations to the governments and people of the Republic of Botswana, Mozambique and the United States of America (USA) on the successful conclusion of their recent elections.

“Cabinet commends the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalitions in Botswana on its success under the leadership of President-elect Duma Boko, and welcomed the establishment of transitional plans between the outgoing administration and the incoming administration of President-elect Boko,” Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said in a post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday.

Cabinet has also congratulated Mozambican President-elect Daniel Chapo and his party, FRELIMO, on their victory following the country’s historic election, which was held 32 years following the signing of the General Peace Agreement. 

The agreement brought an end to the civil war and introduced multi-party democracy in Mozambique.

US Election outcome

Cabinet has further congratulated President-elect Donald Trump following the US elections held on 5 November 2024. 

“South Africa looks forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump over the next 12 months when President Cyril Ramaphosa assumes the Presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2024,” Cabinet said. 

Answering a question on whether the US Presidential election outcome will change anything between South Africa and the US, Ntshavheni said government has indicated that it relates with the US government and that “it doesn’t matter which administration is in place”. 

“Our trade relationship is with the government of the day, and we continue to engage with them and whether there are trade issues or other diplomatic issues. Our view is that our participation in AGOA [African Growth and Opportunity Act] is anchored by the value that South Africa adds in the AGOA process, and how its participation adds value for the American economy – that is the position we maintain,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za
