GOOD Statement by Brett Herron, GOOD Secretary-General & Member of the Western Cape Parliament:
The GOOD Party welcomes the Labour Court judgment ordering the retrospective reinstatement of GOOD Councillor Wesley Neumann as Principal of Heathfield High School. This ruling is a clear and decisive victory for justice, the rule of law, and accountable governance, ending more than five years of unjust persecution.
Councillor Neumann is not only an experienced and respected educator, but also a duly elected City of Cape Town councillor for the GOOD Party. From the outset, GOOD has maintained that the actions taken against him were neither fair nor lawful and were driven by political hostility rather than any legitimate concern about his performance or integrity. The Labour Court has now unequivocally confirmed this.
This case stands as a damning indictment of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the political leadership that chose to pursue a personal and losing legal battle at enormous cost to the public.
Millions of rands in public money were wasted on legal fees and the appointment of replacement principals, all in pursuit of a case that the courts have now rejected. This constitutes fruitless and wasteful expenditure that the people of the Western Cape will ultimately have to pay for.
Both the current MEC for Education, David Maynier, and his predecessor, Debbie Schäfer, had multiple opportunities to demonstrate the judgment and leadership the public should be entitled to expect of public servants. They should and could have resolved this matter.
Instead, they chose to fight the law, prolong the suffering of an individual and his family, and deepen divisions within the Heathfield High School community. In the end, the law prevailed, and Wesley Neumann was successful.
For far too long, the WCED leadership has harmed the Heathfield community through divisive conduct, deliberately attempting to turn parents, learners, and staff against a principal who enjoyed broad community support. This approach has undermined trust in public institutions and caused unnecessary instability at a public school that should have been protected, not politicised.
GOOD commends Councillor Neumann and his family for their extraordinary resilience and dignity throughout this ordeal. We also acknowledge the steadfast support shown by the Heathfield High School community, whose refusal to be intimidated played a critical role in sustaining this long fight for justice.
This judgment must serve as a warning to those who abuse power and public resources to pursue political agendas.
GOOD will continue to demand accountability for wasteful expenditure, defend public servants against political victimisation, and stand up for communities harmed by poor governance.
We call on MEC Maynier to accept the judgment as the end of unnecessary lawfare and to resist the temptation to appeal, just because he has access to a bottomless public purse.
Sometimes, court judgments align the law with fairness. This is one of those cases.
We wish Neumann well as he returns to his rightful position.
