Entries Fly in for Lipton Cup in ‘New’ Boat

This year’s Lipton Cup will be sailed on J22 Yachts.

Entries for the 2025 Lipton Challenge Cup close in less than two months – and, according to the event’s social media pages, you won’t want to miss what’s shaping up to be an epic showdown on the water

This year promises intense competition, with the likes of confirmed entries coming from David Rae representing Royal Cape Yacht Club , Luke Wagner for HMYC – Henley Midmar Yacht Club, Mike Farrington and Andrea “Dre” Giovannini for Royal Natal Yacht Club , Arin Long for UCT Yacht Club, Sibu Sizatu for RCYC Sailing Academy, and Dominique Provoyeur representing Milnerton Aquatic Club.

The most recent additions to the entry list include: Gqeberha Sailing and Boskop Yacht Club as first-time entries in the Lipton Cup — Boskop proudly stepping onto the national stage from their stunning home waters in the North West Province and Gqeberha Sailing rising from the ashes of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club.

This milestone marks an exciting chapter for Boskop, and as part of their entry, organisers shared the following message from Mike Robinson, President of South African Sailing and helm of the Boskop entry:

“This entry celebrates the alignment of three exciting moments. Boskop Yacht Club has never before entered the Lipton Cup, but with the club now entering a vibrant growth phase, it is important that we see ourselves as an active and equal part of South Africa’s competitive sailing community. This challenge aims to inspire our new members by proving that Boskop’s halcyon days are far from over — and that from our beautiful enclave in the North West, anything is still possible.

“It was a bold and visionary move by the Trustees of the Lipton Cup to adopt the J22 class — a decision that makes the Challenge truly accessible to clubs across the country. Boskop supports this inclusive approach wholeheartedly, and this entry is our way of putting our money where our mouth is.

“South African Sailing has long championed inclusivity in the sport. Boskop Yacht Club’s decision to appoint the President of SA Sailing to helm the team gives the organisation a unique opportunity to tangibly express its support for this dynamic, forward-looking, and inclusive Lipton Cup Challenge.”

  1. When a batsman scores 100 runs, it’s called a century and is considered an achievement.

  2. In case of windy conditions during a match, the umpires may decide to have the bails removed to avoid having them blown off. They may also be replaced by heavier bails to keep them secure on the stumps. Although the bails may not be present, they are assumed to still be on the stump. It will then be up to the umpires to decide if the wicket had been broken or not.
