SA Sailors Sail off to World Championships

Olivia Purchase and Noah Clulow have been selected to represent South Africa at the Youth Sailing World Championships in the Portuguese venue of Vilamoura from 12-20 December.

Both young sailors will also be part of World Sailing’s Emerging Nations Programme which aims to help close the performance gap between emerging and developed sailing nations and promote worldwide competition.

This programme is run each year before the annual Youth Sailing World Championships. Successful sailors are invited to a four-day training camp before then taking part in the championships. World Sailing provides support for flights to the event, as well as the event entry fee, and costs related to the training camp including boat charter and accommodation.

The Youth Sailing World Championships attracts the best youth sailors from around the world and follows a similar format to Olympic sailing where all sailors compete on a level playing field across all events. In total, 11 events will be sailed in male, female and mixed categories, with the events open to sailors aged above the age of 12 years and under the age of 19 years on 31 December 2025.

For more than half a century, the Youth Sailing World Championships have been the pinnacle of youth sailing performance, providing the global stage for future sailing stars to shine and becoming a major stepping stone for many world and Olympic champions.

  1. England is the only team in the northern hemisphere to have won the Rugby World Cup – Given the game’s origins in England, statistically southern hemisphere teams are wayyyyyyy better at rugby. In total there have been 9 Rugby World Cups. New Zealand have won 3, South Africa have won 3, Australia have won it twice, and England are the only team in the northern hemisphere to have won it. Maybe the Rugby World Cup 2023 hosted in France will be another win for a European team though!
