The ongoing shortage of medicine and basic medical care at clinics in Boksburg is indicative of a systematic collapse of primary healthcare services in the Ekurhuleni Metro.
Complaints received by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) are not isolated incidents, but form part of an obvious pattern of poor management, negligence and a lack of accountability.
Residents are increasingly being turned away without receiving treatment, access to chronic medication is denied, and patients experience a general lack of respect and human dignity.
Several patients have told the party that they are being excluded and denied care based solely on administrative grounds, such as repeated appointments without any medical assessment to determine their condition or the urgency thereof.
This practice is unethical, dangerous and directly violates patients’ rights.
Meanwhile, clinics face serious medication and essential equipment shortages, putting both patients and healthcare workers at risk.
Public clinics exist to serve communities, particularly vulnerable and unemployed residents who cannot afford private healthcare.
When basic medication, equipment and dignified treatment are lacking, the consequences are serious and potentially life-threatening.
The Freedom Front Plus notes that the Mayoral Committee Member for Health and Social Development, Bridget Thusi, has instructed the Department to act. While this acknowledgement of the problem is welcomed, it is not enough to fix a deeply dysfunctional system.
The Freedom Front Plus urgently calls for:
- A comprehensive investigation into the functioning of clinics in Boksburg.
- Immediate interventions to address shortages of medication and equipment.
- Clear guidelines stipulating that no patient may be turned away without a basic medical assessment.
- Proper oversight and consequences when staff conduct breaches healthcare ethics.
- Transparent feedback to communities on remedial action.
This crisis is the direct result of years of maladministration, poor planning and political failure under ANC and EFF rule in Ekurhuleni.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep up the pressure, demand accountability and stand with communities dependent on public healthcare.
