George: One Year Later- Still No Justice

GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd, GOOD George Municipality Councillor:

One year has passed since the completion and handover of the Western Cape Government’s forensic investigation into the May 2024 George building collapse. Yet, to date, there has been no clear public outcome, no accountability, and no justice for the victims and their families.

This silence is deeply troubling.

A forensic report that gathers dust does not serve the public interest. Lives were lost because systems meant to protect the public failed. Families were shattered. And a full year later, the people of George are still left in the dark about who will be held responsible.

GOOD questions:

• Why has there been no visible progress in the investigation?
• Have charges been considered or recommended?
• Who is accountable for the regulatory failures that allowed this tragedy to occur?

Justice delayed is justice denied. The continued absence of action risks normalising negligence and eroding public trust in our institutions.

We therefore call on SAPS and all relevant authorities to:

• Publicly account for the status of the investigation
• Clarify whether criminal charges will follow
• Commit to concrete timelines for action

GOOD will not allow this matter to fade from public memory. We will continue to demand answers, accountability, and justice, for the victims, for their families, and for every resident who deserves to feel safe in their city.

We will continue to raise this matter until justice is not only promised but delivered.

SAPS has had the forensic report for a year. The public deserves to know whether justice is being pursued. The time for reports has passed; the time for charges and accountability is now.

A forensic report completed by the province means nothing if no one ensures consequences, accountability cannot end at handover.
