Decisive Action Needed Following Transport Sector March

The GOOD Party reiterates its full support for the transport sector following the march, recently held in George.

The concerns raised by taxi operators, e-hailing services, and scholar transport providers point to deep and ongoing challenges that can no longer be met with delay or uncertainty. They firmly placed on the table: issues of fairness, access to economic opportunities, transparency in issuing permits, and the need for a genuinely inclusive and competitive transport environment.

At its core, this matter speaks to the exclusion of local operators and the growing frustration of communities who feel their voices are not being adequately responded to. The right of commuters to choose, and the right of operators to participate meaningfully in the economy, must be protected.

These concerns are not new. They have already been raised at the Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Mobility, yet little progress has been seen on the ground.

GOOD therefore calls on the DA-led George Municipality and the DA-led Western Cape Provincial Government to move beyond engagement and provide clear, time-bound interventions. Continued inaction will only deepen the crisis and further erode public trust.

We further emphasise that unresolved issues relating to scholar transport and commitments made to schools cannot continue to be overlooked. These are matters that directly affect learners and families and require immediate intervention.

The transport sector has made its position clear. What is required now is decisive, transparent, and accountable action. Failure to act will only escalate tensions and place additional strain on an already pressured sector.
