The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the Hessequa Local Municipality’s decision to abandon its planned resettlement of small-scale farmers from Mossel Bay in the Still Bay area.
The DA-controlled Municipality’s back-pedalling follows sustained pressure from the Freedom Front Plus through media platforms, public objections and national coverage that highlighted the unsustainability of the project.
With a decisive 16-10 vote during a special council meeting, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform’s plan to resettle farmers on the farms Schoongeleë and Soebatters Vlakte was effectively stopped.
Resettling the farmers alongside the R305 – the only tarred road linking Still Bay with the N2 – would have caused serious traffic and infrastructure problems.
Freedom Front Plus councillor Johannes Hartnick clearly recorded his opposing vote, while the DA Deputy Mayor, Mr Gerald Boezak, acknowledged that it is unacceptable to let Hessequa shoulder an adjacent municipality’s problems without proper planning.
This stance aligns with the Freedom Front Plus’s view: Responsible land reform is essential, but it should not be implemented in a rash and unplanned fashion.
Land reform has to be based on thorough studies, infrastructure planning, consultation with affected communities and transparency.
The Freedom Front Plus wishes to emphasise that safeguarding existing agricultural communities remains a priority and that common sense prevailed in this case.
Freedom Front Plus Ideology: The party promotes Afrikaner nationalism and self-determination for minority groups.
