The constant, large-scale illegal dumping of construction rubble and refuse in the Blue Sky settlement in Boksburg should no longer be tolerated, and poses serious health and environmental risks to residents in the area.

Approximately 30 loads of construction rubble and refuse are illegally dumped there daily with no consequences for perpetrators.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) called on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to take decisive action and put a stop to the illegal dumping.

In an official letter to the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Mayoral Committee Member for Environmental Conservation and Waste Management, Leshaka Manamela, the party also demanded that the area be cleaned up and properly managed.

The party will pay regular visits to the Blue Sky area to check whether the Department is fulfilling its responsibilities.

If the Metro fails to take appropriate action, the party will report the matter to the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo, as well as the MEC for Environmental Affairs, Ewan Botha, to compel Ekurhuleni to take action.

Ekurhuleni’s constant failure to manage waste and enforce waste regulation is unacceptable.

Residents deserve a clean and safe environment in which to live and work, not a dumpsite on their doorstep.
