City of Joburg implements water restrictions: Joburg mayor Dada Morero says the water situation in Johannesburg is part of a greater national crisis that requires immediate action.
He says water restrictions are needed to encourage responsible usage by residents.
Morero detailed the steps the metro is taking to address the supply challenges.
“The water situation is a crisis,” he said.
“We must implement restrictions so that we start saying to our residents you can’t use drinking water for irrigation or to water your garden, car wash etc.

South Africa’s free electricity failure: Government’s free basic electricity (FBE) programme has failed to provide financial relief to poor South Africans, according to environmental researcher Dr Neil Overy and EarthLife Africa Johannesburg programs manager Thabo Sibeko.
In a recent Sunday Times article, the pair pointed out that the FBE programme had two key problems.
They explained that households who qualify for FBE only receive 50kWh of free electricity in a month, an amount which was set all the way back in 2003.

Four suspected robbers killed in Alberton shootout: Police say the four were intercepted while on their way to commit a business robbery in Johannesburg.
“As the law enforcement agencies were stopping the vehicle with four occupants, the suspects started shooting at the law enforcement officers,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
“A shootout and a high-speed chase ensued, and the suspect’s vehicle capsised in the center of the road.
“All four suspects were certified dead on the scene, and four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.”
None of the law enforcement officers were injured.

UK healthcare property investor Assura set to list in Johannesburg: (Alliance News) – Assura PLC on Monday revealed it is applying for a secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, in a move to secure greater trading liquidity for its shares.
Assura is a real estate investment trust focused on healthcare properties in the UK and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 index in London.
It is applying for the secondary inward listing which it expects to improve the liquidity of its shares through its “increased profile in the South African market”.

South African authorities identify pesticide linked to recent deaths of 6 children: A toxicology investigation confirmed the recent deaths of six children in Soweto were caused by ingesting a dangerous organophosphate pesticide, South African authorities announced on Monday.
“All the six children died of Terbufos ingestion. In the past weeks, several chemicals were bandied around as possible causes of death. Some were even found in some retailers,” Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said at a press briefing.
He further explained that organophosphate is not one substance, but a group of substances typically used in agriculture or as pesticides.

Lomas corruption case transferred to the Johannesburg high court: The R1.4bn corruption case against Michael Harry Lomas has been transferred to the Johannesburg high court, where he will appear on December 3.
Lomas made a brief appearance in the Palm Ridge regional court and will remain in custody as he did not make any formal bail application.
“Lomas will be joined with 11 others and include Eskom’s senior executives and Tibular Construction Projects directors, wherein they are facing 65 counts of corruption linked to the R1.4bn that was meant for the upgrade of Eskom’s Kusile power station in Mpumalanga between 2014 and 2017,” Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) spokesperson Henry Mamothame said.
