A group of learners from the Khanyisa Special School for the Blind in KwaDwesi in Gqeberha are heading for America to enter the ‘America’s Got Talent show’.
The trip came about after the 13 learners trended on social media for their Gwijo. Their war cry to support the Springboks for last year’s Rugby World Cup caught the attention of the America’s Got Talent team.
This exciting opportunity comes while visually impaired people in the Eastern Cape grapple with a number of challenges, including a shortage of schools that can accommodate their special needs.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the visually impaired choir as they set to represent South Africa with pride on the popular show. Their vocal harmony made their dream come true, delivering a heartfelt performance of ‘I Am Sorry’ with immense passion. They also still count on a blast from the past.
The choir is made up of 13 learners.
Learner Akahlulwa Gqirana says, “I am very happy as I will not only be representing my school, but my country as well as my family, they will be very proud of me.”
Lithalethu Mxithi also a learner says, “From when I was a child, I would always wake up and sing gospel music, that is when I discovered that I love singing. This makes me feel proud.”
The vocalist Sesona Xengxe has aspirations to make it big one day. “Since I was young, I have always wanted to go to America. Not only to visit but also to see gospel music and other genres.”
Teachers and parents at the school are in full support of the choir.
Conductor Gcina Mqati adds, “For me, it is a privilege to work with them, these are very good kids, a bunch of winners. We are going to be representing South Africa there and we will be showcasing our culture since it is based on singing and dancing.”
Khanyisa is also known in the world of sport and has produced a number of top judokas who have represented South Africa.
