The Lekwa Local Municipality (Standerton and Morgenzon) has a persistent tendency not to fully repair roads and sidewalks after carrying out work. This seriously endangers residents.
The Municipality has been digging trenches for water pipes and power cables for over a year, yet the work is left unfinished.
Trenches remain open, pavements and roads are not properly repaired, and homeowners’ driveways and paving are left damaged despite repeated complaints from residents.
This poses a serious hazard to pedestrians and motorists.
Unremoved rubble and soil wash into the storm water system when it rains, blocking drains and causing streets to flood.
Many storm water drain covers are missing or broken, posing a major accident risk.
Even the sidewalks in the CBD are overrun by weeds – a clear sign that routine maintenance is not done.
The Municipality is legally obliged to keep roads, pavements and storm water systems safe and in good repair.
In terms of the Municipal Systems Act and the Constitution, service delivery must benefit all residents while their safety is ensured. Open trenches, broken drains and blocked systems are not only dangerous, but could also lead to legal action if someone is injured or property is damaged.
So, the Municipality could be held liable for negligence.
The Freedom Front Plus demands that the Municipality immediately take action to repair all open trenches and damaged areas, remove rubble and implement a proper maintenance plan.
Residents deserve to live and work in a safe and tidy environment.
