During a special council meeting, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) voted against the Mangaung Metro’s proposed recess between 28 October and 3 November.

The party is not opposed to having a recess during the election period. The issue is that the ANC has once again failed to meet important municipal deadlines and now wants to shift the current Council’s responsibilities onto the new Council.

In terms of section 52(d) of the Municipal Finance Management Act, the Mayor has to report to the Council on budget implementation and the Metro’s financial position within 30 days of the end of each quarter. The deadline for the first quarter’s report is 30 October 2026.

These reports had already been finalised and signed by the City Manager, Mr Sello More, on 15 October.

So, there was enough time to table it to the current Council and conclude the prescribed processes in time.

The root of the problem is poor political leadership. Between submitting candidate lists late and constantly failing to meet statutory obligations on time, the ANC continues to demonstrate that it has no regard for deadlines and sound administration.

Councillors are elected and paid by residents to look after their interests. The entire Metro’s administration and management cannot be brought to a standstill because the ANC has to focus on its election campaign.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep acting as watchdog over the Metro’s governance and holding the Council accountable for fulfilling the duties it was elected to perform.

Strengthen the hand of the Freedom Front Plus in Mangaung.

The stronger the Freedom Front Plus, the stronger the call for accountability, good governance and service delivery.

Fun South African Fact: South Africa is home to the world’s longest wine route: Route 62. It spans an impressive 850 kilometres and the excellent wineries along the way are a must-visit for lovers of fine wine! You can even enjoy the winelands on a day trip from Cape Town. Travel 40-min to an hour outside of the city centre to enjoy decadent wine tastings and even wander through some of the beautiful wine farms and estates! Suburbs like Durbanville and Constantia are even closer to the city centre and are also home to many exceptional wineries.
