Mpumalanga’s public healthcare system is under severe pressure due to poor management and administrative neglect, despite a healthcare budget of R21.1 billion for the 2026/27 financial year.
The province is grappling with a critical staffing shortage that has resulted in dangerously high nurse-to-patient ratios. According to data analysed by healthcare organisations, Mpumalanga’s general ratio stands at approximately one nurse for every 313 people in the total provincial population.
This administrative failure forces exhausted nurses to work double shifts and, in many cases, take on extra work at private hospitals simply to survive.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are similarly in a crisis. Despite a budget of approximately R535 million, ambulances frequently fail to show up, exposing patients to life-threatening delays.
A further R504.9 million has been earmarked for infrastructure, including the construction of the new Middelburg Hospital and the Mpumalanga Mental Health Hospital.
Yet, service delivery on the ground remains inadequate due to poor execution and a lack of accountability.
The core problem in the province’s healthcare system is not a shortage of funds, but a lack of competent management, political nepotism, and the protection of cadres at the expense of patients.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) did not support the budget because it prioritises political interests over the health and well-being of Mpumalanga’s residents.
Residents deserve a healthcare system that works – not just large budgets on paper, but actual service delivery at hospitals, clinics, and emergency services.
