RCYC Members Found Drowned in Marina

22 May 2025 by Guest

In a Facebook post the Royal Cape Yacht Club confirmed a tragic incident that occurred between the evening of 20 May and the early hours of 21 May 2025. An elderly couple, both dual citizens and long-standing members of the Club, were found deceased in the waters adjacent to the RCYC marina.

At approximately 07h30 yesterday morning, a fellow Club member and close friend of the couple arrived to greet them aboard their vessel, only to discover the wife’s body in the water. The Marina Manager was immediately alerted and in turn contacted the South African Police Service.

Following a preliminary inspection of the vessel, all personal belongings and cell phones were found undisturbed, prompting a broader search of the area. Tragically, the body of the husband was later discovered within the marina.

An inquest docket has been opened by the authorities. While foul play is not suspected at this stage, investigations are ongoing.

The next of kin has been contacted and is en route to Cape Town.

RCYC General Manager Toni Mainprize expressed the Club’s grief: “We are devastated by this tragic loss. The couple have been loyal members of the Club since 2010, visiting annually to carry out maintenance on their boat, during which time they were granted special permission to reside onboard. Their presence in our community will be sorely missed.”

Out of respect for the family and friends, the Club will not be releasing further details at this time.

Van der Merwe is approached by SANRAL one day who want to build a new highway through his donkey farm. Van is really concerned with how his donkeys can get from one side of the farm to the other without having to cross the highway and risk being injured or killed. He is promised that they will build bridges the highway so that his donkeys can cross under the highway. Van agrees and gives them the go-ahead.

The highway is built and a year later the same rep goes to the farm to go see how Van and his donkeys are. He eventually finds Van under one of these bridges chipping away at the roof of the tunnel with a hammer and chisel.

\”Mnr Van de Merwe, what are you doing damaging the highway bridge?\”
