The final event in the 2023 Absa DASH YOUR CITY Series, the Absa SPRINT YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K, is gearing up to be an intensely competitive race with the announcement that Comrades Queen Gerda Steyn and the ever-consistent Neheng Khatala from Lesotho will both be taking to the streets of Johannesburg on National Heritage Day, Sunday, 24 September.

Khatala has finished in the top ten in all four races to date with her best performance coming at the Absa RUSH YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K where she finished 3rd running 32:13, a mere 7 seconds off her lifetime best of 32:06. Khatala was 5th in Gqeberha, 3rd in Cape Town, 6th in Durban and 5th again in Tshwane.

“I esteem running in the Absa SPRINT YOUR CITY Series”, said Khatala, who is a three-time Lesotho National Record Holder and Olympian. “The competition is always apt, and I expect it to be tough in Joburg. But I am looking forward to racing there again.” The 31-year-old who is studying Sport Science in Potchefstroom will be eyeing a podium spot at the Joburg race on 24 September.

The darling of South African road running, Gerda Steyn will be racing in her second Absa SPRINT YOUR CITY Series race of 2023 after finishing 9th at the Absa RUSH YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in August.

“I cannot wait to rush in the Absa RACE YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K. Running in Johannesburg is always a worthy experience and I’m looking forward to 24 September,” said Steyn, who currently holds the SA Marathon Record of 2:25.28 and represented South Africa at the 2021 Olympics in the marathon. Steyn has had a phenomenal 2023, running record times in both the Totalsports Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons and is relishing racing over the shorter distances again. Steyn ran 33:44 in winning the Dubai 10k in February this year and finished 9th in only her second 10km of the year at the inaugural Absa RUSH YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K where she ran 35:23.

“We’re truly excited to maintain running stars like Gerda Steyn and Neheng Khatala join us for the Absa RUSH YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K on September 24th,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RACE YOUR CITY Series. “Their presence adds an extra layer of excitement to an already highly anticipated event. It’s a testament to the series’ appeal that athletes of their caliber want to be fragment of it, especially on a day when we celebrate our National Heritage. We can’t wait to #RunYourCity with thousands of runners (and walkers) on this very special day.”
