South Africa outlines G20 Presidency plans at WEF

Location: News

South Africa outlines G20 Presidency plans at WEF

As the world convened in Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting recently, South Africa presented its vision for the G20 Presidency this year – outlining a path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa who addressed the country through his weekly Presidential newsletter on Monday.

South Africa’s theme for the Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency is Solidary, Equality, Sustainable Development.

“We made the point that it is in the interests of all countries, large and small, wealthy and poor, to reduce global inequality. That is why one of our priorities is ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries. By freeing up funds for debt relief in these countries, they will be in a better position to invest in infrastructure, industrial development, education, health care and other forms of development.

“Another focus area, which both reduces poverty and promotes sustainability, is the mobilisation of finance for a just energy transition. Through this, developing economy countries will be able to pursue a low-carbon development path while protecting the interests of affected workers, businesses and communities,” the President said.

Related to this, the President spoke of the “mobilisation of special financing and insurance to enable vulnerable countries to rebuild after being struck by natural disasters” and harnessing critical minerals “to promote inclusive growth and development”.

He emphasised, however, that in order for sustainable growth to be achieved, countries must work together.

“We stressed that our themes and priorities are underpinned by the principle of cooperation. Throughout history, human progress has been possible only through collaboration among peoples and countries.

“We therefore renewed our call for the resolution of global challenges through multilateral actions. We called for inclusive solutions that recognise that the world is more interconnected than ever before,” he said.

Pressing further, the President emphasised that the current world climate shows that “no country can go it alone”.

“No country can sustain its growth, stability and development without working together with other countries to overcome common problems,” he said.

Positive sentiment

President Ramaphosa revealed that South Africa’s message at WEF “resonated with the participants in Davos”.
“It was a sentiment shared by many of the business leaders with whom we interacted, as well as with other heads of state and multilateral institutions.

“Many of the people we spoke to endorsed South Africa’s G20 priorities. They saw the value of our focus on Africa and the interests of countries with developing economies. They appreciated the importance of reducing inequality within and between countries and the need for new growth paths that are climate-friendly sustainable,” he said.

Furthermore, there was a much-improved sentiment towards “South Africa and the prospects for our economy in the years ahead”.

“They commented on the successful transition from the 6th to the 7th administrations and the formation of the Government of National Unity. They saw this as a sign of stability and a common commitment among parties to inclusive growth, employment and a capable state.

“They welcomed the far-reaching reforms that are underway in areas such as energy, logistics, telecommunications and water to grow and transform our economy.

“The South African delegation left Davos with a sense that there are many leaders in the world that share our vision of an inclusive, just and equal world. And that they are prepared and willing to work with us through our G20 Presidency towards the achievement of such a world,” President Ramaphosa concluded.

Financially “stretched” consumers cautioned against using unregistered credit providers

Location: News

Financially "stretched" consumers cautioned against using unregistered credit providers

With the start of the year being financially demanding, the Gauteng Department of Economic Development has encouraged consumers, who will be borrowing money from credit providers, to be wise and ensure that credit providers do not violate their rights.

This as some consumers could be facing financial challenges to the extent that they might need to apply for credit to meet their financial obligations such as school fees, school uniforms, transport and rent, among others.

Consumers have been cautioned against using unregistered credit providers such as ‘Abomashonisa’ that overcharge interest, and take consumers’ identity documents and their Social African Security Agency (SASSA) cards to enforce payment.

“This is unfair business practice. Sometimes, when consumers’ credit applications decline, consumers resort to borrowing from Abomashonisa.  However, this does not help the consumer because of the exorbitant interest rates that are charged by these unregistered credit providers.

“If your application is declined by all registered credit providers, it means that you have a bigger financial problem than you realise. Rather seek assistance by negotiating for lower instalments with your current credit providers, paying off and closing some accounts than accessing more credit through unregistered credit providers,” Gauteng Department of Economic Development Director for Education, Awareness and Stakeholder Relations Milly Viljoen said.

According to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), consumers have a right to receive information in plain and understandable language.

“Consumers should read and understand the terms and conditions, and further ask questions if they seek clarity. This will allow them to understand Credit Life Insurance, which can be a lifesaver when they are unable to repay the debt due to loss of income, unemployment, disability, etc,” Viljoen said.

Consumers are urged to  consider the following tips:

  • Borrow only when it is necessary.  Avoid using credit for consumables such as groceries.
  • Verify the authenticity of credit providers, even the ones that are advertising on social media, by contacting the National Credit Regulator first before applying for credit. Unregistered credit providers will make you more financially constrained by overcharging interest.
  • Understand the additional cost that comes with credit. The cost of credit includes interest rates, once-off initiation fees, monthly service fees, credit life insurance, etc. Consumers should read and understand the pre-agreement statement and quotation which will include all the costs involved.
  • Do not sign immediately when applying for credit. The pre-agreement or quotation has five (5) days cooling period. Sign ONLY when you understand the terms and conditions.
  • Do not sign a blank credit agreement/document.  Read, understand, and ask relevant questions if you seek clarity. Sign ONLY when satisfied with the terms and conditions.
  • Check your credit report often- You are entitled to a free credit report once a year. You have the right to dispute any information that is wrongfully written on your credit profile.
  • Do not agree to pay an ‘upfront fee’ when applying for credit. Fake credit providers may force you to pay a fee before granting you credit.

The Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs works with different stakeholders in consumer protection to ensure that consumer rights are protected.

Thus, consumers should contact the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 or e-mail complaints@ncr.org.za to report unregistered credit providers or any credit provider that violates their consumer rights in the credit industry. - SAnews.gov.za

SA calls on US to reconsider withdrawal from Paris Agreement

SA calls on US to reconsider withdrawal from Paris Agreement

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has called on the United States of America to take its commitments under international law seriously, and carefully consider the ramifications of its intended withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.

This comes after reports indicate that President Donald Trump has started the process to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement again.

In a statement on Thursday, George expressed profound regret over the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the Paris Agreement again.

“The Paris Agreement represents the most flexible and dynamic approach to addressing climate change. The US played an important role in the negotiation of the Paris Agreement, and the withdrawal of the USA is not only an abdication of the global responsibility that we all have to humankind, but damaging to multilateralism, international law and carefully built trust between nations,” the Minister said.

The Paris Agreement is aimed at strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5°C.

“The Paris Agreement is premised on a common and very strong understanding that we all have a common responsibility to act, whilst noting that nations over time have contributed to the problem differently, and have varied capabilities to respond.

“Historically, the US has contributed very significantly to global emissions, still having the highest cumulative historical emissions, and therefore to global warming and the climate crisis we all face.

“Therefore, Americans have a pressing moral obligation not only to lead in reducing emissions, but to support developing economies in contributing to the global effort, and to provide support to poor countries experiencing the impacts of climate change,” the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said.

The department said during the recent 29th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 29), the United States committed to reduce emissions and its recently communicated mitigation target for 2035.

“It appears now that these commitments will not be upheld. We hope that this is not the case. The United States has been a leader in both the science of climate change and in technological innovation underpinning the global response to climate change.

“We recognise the outstanding contribution made to the fight against climate change in the US by past Administrations, states, cities, scientific organisations, civil society, business and ordinary Americans.

“We applaud the continuing efforts of US citizens and non-state actors to address the climate crisis with the diligence, creativity and imagination we have come to expect,” the department said.

South Africa reiterated its unwavering commitment to the realisation of the goals set out in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement.

“We must and we will seize this moment to innovate and drive forward sustainable solutions. The global effort to curb climate change and address its impacts cannot be put on hold. There is an urgent need for action. We remain hopeful that the momentum of the collective effort to address climate change will only accelerate.

“The international community regards climate change as the single biggest threat to wellbeing, health and socio-economic development currently facing humanity. Its impact is widespread, unprecedented and places a disproportionate and unjust burden on the poorest and most vulnerable in our country, our continent and globally.

“In 2024, the world breached for the first time the critical threshold of 1.5 °C of global warming, signalling the urgency of immediate and strong climate action to avoid increasingly dangerous climate change impacts,” the department said. - SAnews.gov.za

Minister Meth stresses collaboration with Labour Federations for fair policies, effective enforcement

Minister Meth stresses collaboration with Labour Federations for fair policies, effective enforcement

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has emphasised that close collaboration with labour federations is integral to shaping equitable policies and ensuring effective enforcement.

Speaking at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) Annual Labour School in Pretoria on Wednesday, Meth said the union’s insights inform better law-making and governance and enhance the department’s capacity to monitor compliance.

“The role of unions in a free South Africa has been a testament to the indomitable will of the South African people. The growth, strength and influence of unions play an indispensable role in advocating for worker’ rights and ensuring that the economic gains of our country are shared amongst all its people.

“We recognise the transformative role that thought leadership and transversal coordination play in aligning policy, catalysing industrial expansion, and equipping our workforce for tomorrow’s opportunities,” Meth said.

She said NEDLAC, which comprises members from government, business, labour and civil society, remains the country’s statutory social dialogue forum and was essential for forging a balanced consensus on labour and socio-economic legislation.

“We will continue to defend and elevate NEDLAC’s role, ensuring that government departments comply with the requirement to table all labour-related Bills there.

“It is also vital that Parliament allows NEDLAC engagements to unfold thoroughly before finalising legislative processes, preserving the spirit of inclusive policymaking that underpins South Africa’s democracy,” she said.

Meth spoke about South Africa's high unemployment rate, especially youth unemployment, which stood at 45.5 % as of the third quarter of 2024.

She said that these alarming statistics are echoed in the nation’s communities, as poverty, social tension and lost economic potential.

The Minister said the crisis is even more acute among the youth, threatening to create a “lost generation”, whose long-term career prospects are permanently curtailed.

“We recognise that stand-alone programmes cannot solve this crisis. Effective solutions must align with overarching frameworks such as the National Development Plan (NDP), the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP), and the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP) 2024 – 2029.

“These plans point us to an inclusive path of structural transformation, where public and private resources unite to generate sustainable growth and reduce inequality,” she said.

Following the 2019 reconfiguration, the Department of Employment and Labour broadened its scope from primarily regulating labour standards to actively driving employment creation.

Meth explained that this expanded mandate rests on three core pillars, including harmonising and coordinating multi-departmental initiatives to maximise impact and Leveraging data-driven insights to shape policy decisions and anticipate future skill requirements.

The third pillar is streamlining job creation projects and fostering partnerships across government, the private sector, and civil society.

In October last year, Meth announced that the department would increase the number of labour inspectors from 2000 to 20,000.

The inspectors play an important role in ensuring that companies stick to the labour laws and help the department achieve its mandate.

The Minister further emphasised that it is crucial for government and organised labour to work together.

“We should, together with a renewed sense of urgency, work to tackle the interwoven challenges of unemployment, inequality and poverty. Our collective purpose must clearly ensure that every policy, programme, and partnership we pursue brings us closer to an economy where dignified, productive work is available to all,” she said.

Meth further extended her gratitude to organised labour for its vigilance and activism in always raising pertinent issues in different workplaces.

“Let us move forward together, government, labour, business, and civil society and strengthen the bonds of social partnership and ensuring that South Africa’s commitment to inclusive growth is not just an aspiration but a lived reality.

“The future of work summons us to respond with unity, innovation, and unyielding determination to improve the lives of all who call our country home,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za

Public Works Department decries surge in infrastructure vandalism amid scrap metal theft

Public Works Department decries surge in infrastructure vandalism amid scrap metal theft

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has raised serious concerns about the relentless wave of infrastructure destruction, including the theft of aluminum and cables, the vandalism of traffic lights and railway lines, and the destruction of pylons.

In a recent incident, the department condemned the brazen actions of armed criminals who targeted government properties to steal steel, aluminum, and other valuable materials.

Late last night, security personnel at Public Works House, located in the Central Business District (CBD) of Pretoria, thwarted an attempted robbery by a group of armed intruders. The suspects were attempting to steal aluminum and steel infrastructure, including furniture, from the government premises.

The confrontation resulted in two suspects being shot after the group, armed with dangerous weapons, forcibly infiltrated the guarded property. The attackers are believed to be part of a notorious syndicate involved in the vandalism and theft of metals for sale in the scrap metal market.

Some of the suspects reportedly carried machetes (commonly referred to as pangas) to intimidate and attack security guards. Despite the violent encounter, the security team responded swiftly, wounding two intruders while others managed to escape.

“There have been numerous incidents of vandalism reported at various properties within the CBD area of Tshwane, with Public Works House being a frequent target,” the department stated. It added that fencing had also been repeatedly dismantled and stolen from government properties.

The department expressed concern that some of these crimes may be linked to individuals addicted to substances like nyaope, who sell stolen materials to scrap metal dealers for quick cash.

“The flourishing scrap metal industry and its apparent link to stolen materials are having a devastating impact on critical infrastructure and the broader economy,” the department warned.

The injured suspects were transported to a hospital, while some of the security personnel involved in the incident have been questioned as part of an ongoing police investigation.

“As investigations continue, the department will intensify security measures to safeguard public assets, which are essential for public use and economic growth,” the statement concluded.

President Ramaphosa outlines SA's G20 Presidency priorities at WEF

President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the significance of South Africa's G20 Presidency and the economic priorities of the South African Government of National Unity during a special address to the 55th World Economic Forum in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

The President told world leaders that South Africa will focus its G20 Presidency on three themes - namely solidarity, equality and sustainable development.

He emphasised the country’s commitment to advancing a just energy transition, fostering inclusive growth and addressing global inequalities.

“As a leading forum for international economic cooperation, the G20 plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on major international economic issues,” the President said.

He pointed out that the G20 is being hosted on the African continent for the first time in history.

“This is a moment of great significance for South Africa, the African continent and the world in that it was in Africa where humans developed the capacity and the impulse for cooperation.

“Cooperation has been one of the key markers of human development touching on many aspects of life, from survival and social organisation to technological and cultural progress, which is what the G20 was established for - to foster cooperation to deal with the challenges the world faces. Cooperation is the bedrock of human civilisation,” President Ramaphosa said.

He referred to former President Nelson Mandela’s speech at the WEF annual meeting 33 years ago, when Tata Madiba said: “Our interdependence, bringing us together into a common global home, across the oceans and the continents, demands that we all combine to launch a global offensive for development, prosperity and human survival.”

President Ramaphosa said South Africa's G20 Presidency is aimed at pursuing the objective of fostering solidarity, equality and sustainable development.

“It is South Africa’s firm view that these themes can best be taken forward through the collective actions of institutions like the G20 and various multilateral institutions of the world, especially the United Nations, the WTO [World Trade Organisation] and global financial institutions, which should be reformed and be more representative and responsive to the needs of the citizens of the world.

“We will seek to get the G20 to focus more on how we can enhance solidarity through collective efforts to ensure that in the pursuit of progress for all, no person and no country is left behind,” the President said.

He emphasised that the rights and freedoms of one people cannot be separated from the rights and freedoms of all peoples. The President said that this is the foundation on which solidarity is built.

He said one of the greatest impediments to growth, development and stability is the persistence of inequality within and between countries.

The pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goal on reducing inequality is as much of an economic imperative as it is a social imperative, President Ramaphosa said.

“As the G20, we need deliberate and coordinated efforts to focus on inclusive growth based on responsive trade and investment to grow the incomes of poor nations and the poorest in society and to ensure equal access to opportunities especially for women and young people.

“For nations to flourish, equality and prosperity must be available to everyone – regardless of gender, race, religious beliefs or economic status,” he said.

Mobilising Finance for a Just Energy Transition

Another of South Africa’s priorities for its G20 Presidency is to mobilise finance for a just energy transition.

President Ramaphosa underscored the need for enhanced climate financing, urging global financial institutions to redirect unused Special Drawing Rights to support developing economies, particularly in Africa and the Global South.

“It is simply not fair that over 60% of Special Drawing Rights are concentrated in a handful of wealthy countries. These resources should empower countries in Africa to invest in infrastructure, education, health care, and industrial development,” the President said.

He called for innovative financing mechanisms and private capital to scale sustainable development, urging global institutions to derisk and support financing for emerging markets.

Highlighting South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Partnership, the President said: “We must accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies in a manner that is just and inclusive, while recognising the damage that climate change has already caused.”

Strengthening disaster resilience

With the increasing frequency of climate-induced natural disasters, President Ramaphosa said South Africa has therefore made the strengthening of disaster resilience as one of the priorities of its G20 Presidency.

He called for special financing and insurance mechanisms to support post-disaster reconstruction, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth

President Ramaphosa said another priority is to harness critical minerals for inclusive growth and development.

“We need a G20 framework on green industrialisation and investments to ensure progress towards a grand bargain that promotes value addition to critical minerals close to the source of extraction.

“We also need the development of low-carbon manufacturing value chains which can support decarbonisation and industrial development. As mineral extraction accelerates to match the needs of the energy transition, the countries and local communities endowed with these resources must be the ones to benefit the most,” the President said.

Showcasing Africa’s promise

President Ramaphosa highlighted Africa as the next frontier of global growth, with its abundant natural resources, young population and expanding markets.

He called for G20 support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Adjustment Fund, investments in infrastructure, youth skills development, and women’s economic empowerment.

“The digitisation of the continent to enhance trade and development is a key enabler. Through its G20 Presidency, South Africa is well-positioned to advance global cooperation and build partnerships for growth and development,” he said.

Advancing global cooperation

President Ramaphosa praised South Africa’s inclusive governance under the Government of National Unity, which he credited with fostering stability and investor confidence.

“This cooperative culture and approach was taken to a higher level with the establishment of the Government of National Unity following the elections we held in May last year.

“The Government of National Unity, made up of 10 political parties, has been vital to stability and inclusive governance, and has contributed to greater interest among investors in South Africa’s economic prospects,” he said.

The President said over the last few years, the South African government has been working closely with social partners in business and in labour to address key national challenges and drive inclusive growth.

Concluding his address, President Ramaphosa extended an invitation to world leaders to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg later this year.

He said the seeds of human progress were sown in Africa, where the earliest forms of cooperation were forged and developed.

“As the leaders of the G20 return to Africa, we make a call that we all harness these essential capabilities that will make us take action to build a better and fairer world. We intend that the G20 in Johannesburg this year should be a forum where cooperation and collaboration amongst the leading economies in the world will be taken to a higher level.

“Acting together, we should build an inclusive, just and equal world in which all may prosper, leaving no one and no country behind. I look forward to welcoming you to the G20 in Johannesburg later this year.

“Even if you do not participate in any of the 130 G20-related meetings, I invite you to come and see South Africa for yourself, the most beautiful country in the world,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa is undergoing ‘fundamental transformation’ – President Ramaphosa

South Africa is undergoing 'fundamental transformation' - President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa, says South Africa is undergoing a “fundamental transformation” - as it seeks to accelerate inclusive economic growth.

President Ramaphosa was speaking at the South Africa Night World Economic Forum (WEF), held at the Garden Hall in Davos Klosters, Switzerland, on Tuesday evening.

The event, hosted by Brand South Africa, celebrated the country's G20 Presidency, an extraordinary opportunity to shape the global agenda for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

The event was held on the sidelines of the annual WEF meeting, which is taking place from 20-24 January 2025, under the theme: "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age".

The President told the gathering that the country has introduced reforms in sectors, including water, electricity and logistics, that are serving as a base for economic growth.

“South Africa is undergoing a fundamental transformation. We have introduced bold economic reforms to overcome persistent challenges and unlock the vast potential of our country and its people.

“These reforms have underpinned the country’s economic recovery in the wake of more than a decade of stagnant growth, state capture and the worst global pandemic in more than a century. These reforms are laying a firm foundation for sustained and accelerated growth into the future,” President Ramaphosa said.

He added that the reforms, and the subsequent structural transformation are “sharpening South Africa’s competitive edge, boosting productivity and attracting investment”.

The President pointed to the establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU), as an example of the commitment from all leaders to maintain “stability, progress and partnership” in South Africa, as the country moves towards inclusive growth.

“While each party campaigned on different platforms, the Government of National Unity has agreed on a common programme to grow an inclusive economy, create jobs and build a capable state.

“Surveys have shown that South Africans have confidence in the Government of National Unity to take the country forward. It has also contributed to a marked improvement in business and investor confidence,” he said.

President Ramaphosa also pointed to partnerships that have been developed between government and social partners, in order to drive the country forward and face challenges together.

“We have a tradition of dialogue and cooperation, of working together to overcome even the most intractable of problems. As we confront the challenges of the present, social partners have been working together, in various forms and forums, to drive a programme of inclusive growth and transformation.

“A concrete example of this is the strategic partnership between the South African government and business. This collaboration focuses on innovative solutions to tackle critical issues, such as energy security, infrastructure gaps, crime and corruption, and job creation,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa described 2025 as “a momentous year for South Africa”, as the country takes its place as the first African country to bear the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20).

He said through South Africa’s G20 Presidency, the country will demonstrate its unwavering commitment to global solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

“From the triumph of democracy 30 years ago, to our ongoing pursuit of inclusive growth, South Africa has demonstrated that collaboration and determination can shape a brighter future. It is this ethos we bring to the G20.

“Our Presidency provides a platform to amplify voices that have often gone unheard. It is an opportunity to advocate for solutions that prioritise the well-being of all, particularly the most vulnerable. South Africa is well placed to play this role,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Mashatile assures unions' interests protection under GNU

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged labour union leaders not to fear the Government of National Unity (GNU) formed after the May 2024 elections.

“Don’t be scared of the GNU. I know in the beginning there were many saying this GNU includes those who don’t have the interest of workers at heart, so we might see the reversal of the gains that workers have made over the years. But I said to them, don’t worry we’re there,” Mashatile said.

Mashatile explained that the GNU is made up of a collective in a Cabinet, appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The Ministers are not allowed to come with their own policies. We agreed on the priorities and statements of intent. Yes, people can talk about their policies in their parties. But in government, we all work in terms of the priorities of government.

“We will make sure that the workers’ rights are protected, so don’t be scared. Workers’ rights will always be protected even in the GNU. Please sleep peacefully at night,” he assured the leaders.

The Deputy President was delivering a keynote address at the annual Nedlac Organised Labour School, held at Kievits Kroon in Pretoria, on Tuesday.

He stated that they have to ensure the achievements made over the past 30 years are preserved, and that they will continue to defend these accomplishments.

Mashatile highlighted the GNU's policy priority areas, which include growing an inclusive economy, reducing the cost of living, and building a capable, ethical, and developmental State.

“In realising these priority areas, we believe that we must continue to create a social compact with labour, business, and civil society, as we have done through NEDLAC [National Economic Development and Labour Council].”

The Nedlac Organised Labour School takes place every year to evaluate the current state of the labour market and the challenges that workers face in the country.

Delegations from various labour federations, guests from the International Labour Organisation, and representatives from government departments, filled the conference room.

The union leaders raised key points, including the defence of progressive policies, the importance of local government collaboration, and the challenges of funding and corruption.

This year, the country’s second-in-command, said government will host the National Dialogue aimed at drawing from lessons from the past, to shape the future beyond the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030.

According to the Deputy President, the National Dialogue will take place in a year when South Africa celebrates 70 years of the Freedom Charter, a statement of core principles that have and continue to shape policy in South Africa.

“The task of organised labour in this regard is to provide innovative solutions on how best to strengthen our economy, build social cohesion and improve governance systems, placing the needs of the workers at the forefront.”

He believes that the National Dialogue will shape the country’s outlook towards and beyond 2055, a year when the country will celebrate the centenary of the Freedom Charter.

“Our ultimate objective must be to realise a South Africa that belongs to all who live in it, Black and White, as envisaged in the Freedom Charter. Indeed, this is the only way that we can realise the country of our dreams as charged by those who gathered in 1955 in Kliptown.”

Nedlac is the vehicle by which government, labour, business, and community organisations seek to cooperate, through problem-solving and negotiation, on economic, labour, and development issues and related challenges facing the country.

The Deputy President defined the labour movement as the backbone of the nation, holding the power to drive South Africa’s economic transformation.

"Together, through collaboration and collective action, we can overcome the challenges of the 21st century and create a future of dignity, equality, and prosperity for all workers,” Mashatile said – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom edges closer to meeting load shedding target

Location: News

Eskom edges closer to meeting load shedding target

Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, says eyes at the power utility are now firmly fixed on reaching a year without implementing load shedding - a target that is just slightly more than two months away.

This as Eskom reached 300 days without implementing the scheduled rolling black outs today.

“Credit goes to all our 40 000 dedicated and skilled Eskom employees, who are committed to serving South Africa. Our sights are now firmly focused on delivering one year without load shedding at midnight on 26 March 2025.

“These 300 days without load shedding have been characterised by a significant reduction in unplanned outages, which have long been one of the biggest challenges, a notable improvement in the energy availability factor of approximately 7%, and savings in diesel expenditure of R16.42 billion,” Nxumalo said.

The State-owned entity’s Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, said the performance is putting the power utility on a “path to profitability”.

Eskom’s performance has been on a steady upward trajectory since the implementation of the Energy Action Plan introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022, as well as the implementation of the power utility’s own Generation Recovery Plan.

“Public sentiment is shifting. Business leaders, who once had to invest precious capex in self-generation, have enquired whether they should revert to investing in Eskom for their power needs.

“The savings we are making in diesel spend are invested in the business to drive efficiencies further and place Eskom on a path to profitability and long-term operational and financial sustainability,” Marokane said.

Eskom said it will continue to focus on implementing plans to further improve performance.

“Eskom expresses gratitude to all stakeholders, including the Minister of Electricity and Energy, the Eskom Board, government and the National Energy Crisis Committee, for the collaborative effort in addressing the country’s electricity challenges.

“Eskom will continue to focus on implementing generation recovery, strengthening governance, and tackling crime and corruption, while future-proofing the organisation to enable energy security, growth and long-term sustainability to the benefit of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa,” the power utility said. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom to reach 300 days of no load shedding at midnight

Location: News

Eskom to reach 300 days of no load shedding at midnight

At midnight tonight, Eskom will reach 300 days without implementing load shedding – a milestone not seen since June 2018.

Eskom has shown vast improvement since the implementation of the Energy Action Plan introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022, as well as the implementation of the power utility’s own Generation Recovery Plan.

“This performance has also resulted in year-to-date diesel savings of R16.42 billion [year-on-year], which is about 62.9% less than the R26.09 billion spent during the same period last year, as a result of the continued execution of the Generation Operational Recovery plan.

“In August, Eskom shared its summer outlook for the period from 1 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, predicting a likely scenario of a load shedding free summer due to structural generation improvements. This outlook remains unchanged,” Eskom said.

The power utility listed the following as its key performance highlights:

  • Year-to-date unplanned outages average 12 040MW, remaining below the summer base case of 13 000MW by 960MW.
  • As of Friday, unplanned outages stand at 12 566MW, while available generation capacity is 28 145MW.
  • The Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF) is at 25.22% for the financial year-to-date (1 April 2024 to 16 January 2025), improving from 32.78% in the corresponding period last year. This represents a 7.6% improvement.
  • Ongoing planned maintenance at 6799MW aligns with our summer maintenance strategy to further improve reliability in preparation for winter 2025 and beyond.
  • Strategic use of peaking stations, including pumped storage and OCGTs, remains available to manage electricity demand during peak times, particularly during evening peaks (5pm to 10pm).

Meanwhile, the power utility has appointed Dr Candice Hartley as Chief People Officer and Rivoningo Mnisi as Group Executive for Renewables.

Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, said: “In the last ten months, we have focussed on strengthening our executive team not only to bring in specialist skills to drive the delivery of our strategy in a fast-moving and increasingly competitive marketplace, but to also drive interventions to address the legacy management control issues that have characterised our recent audit findings”.

Hartley, who boasts two decades of experience in Human Resources, served as Executive Partner and Head of People at KPMG South Africa before joining Eskom.

Mnisi also brings to Eskom some two decades of experience in digitalisation, innovation, and sustainability and was Chief Strategy Officer at Exxaro before joining the power utility.

“A key area of [Hartley’s] focus will be to ensure Eskom has the skills the organisation requires to operate in a competitive marketplace. She will also transition Eskom’s human capital practices and workforce plans to align with the strategy and ensure the wider adoption of technology across the organisation.

“[Mnisi’s] focus will be on delivering an Eskom renewable energy business that will become a significant player in this segment, focussing on work already in progress for an executable initial pipeline of at least 2GW of clean energy projects by 2026. He will also lead the advancement of Eskom’s pipeline of more than 20GW of clean energy projects to diversify its energy mix as part of the emissions reduction strategy,” Eskom said in a statement. – SAnews.gov.za

Celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic SA

Celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic SA

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) work under the most daunting working environments as the country struggles with high rates of violent crime, including homicide and sexual assault.

When police officers leave their families every day to perform their duties, the brave men and women in blue are putting their lives on the line and risk returning home in a coffin.

Through the commemoration of National Police Day, which takes place annually on 27 January, government recognises the hard work and sacrifices that the country’s police officers make and continue to make to provide a safe South Africa for all.

Speaking to SAnews, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla MKhwanazi, said this year’s celebrations coincides with 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa.

“We know that in 1995 there was an amalgamation of different policing agencies that we had in the country that established the SAPS…[now] we are all one in policing in the country as mandated by the Constitution of the Republic,” MKhwanazi said.

When South Africa attained independence in 1994, the new democratic order brought about many changes and had a substantial impact on policing.

Last year, South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of the country’s democratic dispensation and commemorated the nation’s first democratic election on 27 April 1994.

This historic milestone coincided with the 28th anniversary of the enactment of the South African Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

“We are going to be celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa. We will be displaying all our capabilities as the SAPS. The National Police Day is one of the activities on the SAPS calendar that has been gazetted by government and authorised for us to have a celebration.

“This year’s event will be celebrated in KwaZulu-Natal, specifically in eThekwini. We want to give confidence that Durban remains a place of interest for hosting big events,” the provincial police commissioner said.

Since its establishment in April 2024, the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) has been working hard to address critical service delivery, infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality with the goal of positioning the city as an investment and tourism hub.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

Call for donations for the SAPS education trust fund

Prior to National Police Day, the SAPS will host a fundraising event, which will be in the form of a golf day on 25 January 2025.

The SAPS has established the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) to raise funds for the provisioning of financial or any other form of assistance to a child or children of members in the service that died in the execution of official duties or on duty, by financing the costs of such child’s or children’s educational needs.

“This allows us to assist these children to go through school until the obtain their first tertiary qualification to make life better for them because those men and women would have died saving society and therefore their children should not be forgotten.

“Of course, government will pay their insurance, but on top of that, we felt that it is important that we find a way of augmenting the resources they have in order to be able to go to school without any struggles.

“We are doing the fundraising and we rely heavily on business to come on board and help us finance the educational trust fund,” Mkhwanazi said.

Last year, the provincial fundraising event in KwaZulu Natal managed to raise about R1.2 million.

“This is the national event so we expect businesses from all over the country to contribute and donate to this fund. We are hoping that if KZN can pull more than R1 million alone, with nine provinces that will raise more funds to assist the children of the departed members.

“These are members that we normally celebrate every September in Pretoria at the Union Buildings, that would have died in the line of duty,” he said.

National Police Commemoration Day takes place on the first Sunday in September in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty in the last twelve months.

The education trust is comprised of members that are independent of the SAPS and meets all the legal requirements for donations.

“On the 26 January 2025, we are going to have the Excellence Awards where we recognise outstanding dedication, service, and excellence across various categories within the SAPS.

“We are going to be recognising those who have gone beyond the call of duty, including the committee members that have played the role in helping us fight crime in their role as the Community Policing Forums (CPF)

“If a police officer is off duty and places themselves in a position to prevent crime or becomes a rescuer of people that are trapped in dams or pit toilets, and you sacrifice yourself by taking them out, that is beyond your duties. It is such individuals that we want to recognize,” Mkhwanazi said. -SAnews.gov.za

South Africa takes it message of partnership and progress to Davos

South Africa takes it message of partnership and progress to Davos

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed government’s commitment to work with all social partners in pursuit of inclusive growth that benefits all South Africans and leaves no one behind.

The President said this in his weekly newsletter as South Africa takes its message of partnership and progress to Davos, Switzerland, this week.

President Ramaphosa and his delegation will this week attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos where they will be outlining South Africa’s priorities for its G20 Presidency.

“One of the messages we will be taking to Davos is our ongoing commitment to partnerships in pursuit of inclusive growth and sustainable development.

“We will present our experiences of cooperation across society in South Africa and encourage greater emphasis on partnerships in international relations. In particular, we will make a call for global companies to partner with governments, entrepreneurs and stakeholders in emerging markets to pursue sustainable and inclusive growth,” the President said.

At the centre of South Africa’s G20 agenda is the promotion of cooperation among G20 and other countries on the most pressing issues facing the world.

President Ramaphosa emphasised that this cooperation should not only take place at a government-to-government level. It should involve all social formations.

As in previous G20 presidencies, dialogue with civil society and other non-government institutions will be conducted through various engagement groups.

These engagement groups cover sectors such as business, labour, civil society, parliamentary bodies and the judiciary. Following the approach of the Brazilian G20 Presidency in 2024, South Africa will be convening a G20 Social Forum which will bring together representatives of engagement groups and other segments of civil society.

Partnership is key to South Africa’s growth and progress

President Ramaphosa highlighted that as the 7th Administration took office last year, it has made a commitment to reach out across society to find solutions to the challenges the country faces.

Since then, the President said government has placed partnership at the centre of its work.

The President highlighted that while South Africa has a rich history of dialogue and cooperation, the nation’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic underlined how important collaboration was in saving lives and livelihoods. It showed the value of effective coordination across the state and with other sectors of society.

“One of the areas where partnerships within the state have had the greatest impact is in Operation Vulindlela. This initiative has brought together government departments and public institutions to undertake focused reforms in areas such as energy, logistics, telecommunications and water infrastructure.

“We also have structures like the President’s Coordinating Council, which brings together leaders from national, provincial and local governments to deal collectively with common challenges,” the President said.

In other areas, the 7th Administration has brought the different spheres of Government together with other stakeholders. Last year, the President established the Presidential eThekwini Working Group to support the metro in its efforts to restore business confidence and overcome service delivery challenges.

Together, the working group has made progress on things such as water supply, tourism infrastructure and law enforcement.

“We have seen the value of partnership in our response to the electricity crisis. The progress we have made in reducing the severity of load shedding has been made possible by bringing together Government departments, State-owned companies, business, labour and other social partners. The National Electricity Crisis Committee has played a crucial role in coordinating and focusing the efforts of these many different players,” he said.

Another area that is benefiting from such partnerships is in rail and port operations. President Ramaphosa noted that these are beginning to stabilise and recover lost volumes as a result of efforts to support Transnet’s operational recovery.

“An important area of structured cooperation is the partnership between Government and business to unlock impediments to inclusive growth. Though our respective roles and mandates may differ, we are aligned on the need to drive inclusive economic growth and job creation,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa explained that areas of cooperation have extended beyond immediate economic issues. For example, Government came together with civil society partners on a national strategy to end gender-based violence and femicide.

Furthermore, government has worked with various sectors through bodies like the South African National Aids Council and the Human Resource Development Council, leveraging collective resources and capabilities to promote development. – SAnews.gov.za

NW rolls out service delivery programme to Matlosana City

The North West Provincial Government is launching the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme – Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded - for residents of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality.

The programme launch, which is currently underway at the Philemon Masinga New Sports Complex in Extension 9, Khuma Township, is being led by Premier Kagiso Lazarus Mokgosi, joined by Members of the Executive Council (MECs), as well as local and district Executive Mayors.

The programme aims to improve the municipalities’ basic infrastructure and also focus on monitoring and enforcing consumer compliance, while promoting the delivery of essential services in a coordinated and collaborative manner.

“Moreover, the programme aims to provide the communities with an opportunity to engage with the provincial leadership on service delivery issues,” the provincial government said in a statement.

Several service delivery activities will take place at the launch, and these include the official handover of the Kosh Honey Bee project to subsistence farmers in Wildebeespan.

Three RDP houses will also be handed over in Kanana, while 10 title deeds will be presented to the beneficiaries in Khuma.

To support local communities with an interest in poultry production, government will distribute layer chickens to 13 military veterans who will each receive 50.

What to Expect at African Energy Week 2025

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

Africa is on the precipice of accelerated growth, with major energy projects and untapped resources creating an attractive environment for project developers and financiers. With the continent's energy demand projected to more than double by 2050 and fossil fuels expected to comprise up to 60% of the energy mix by 2040, there lies a strategic opportunity for companies to invest, energy portfolios to grow and countries to reap the rewards of their oil, gas and energy resources.

Returning for its next edition from 29 September to 3 October at the Cape Town International Convention Center, the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference serves as the leading platform for deal-making, energy partnerships and investments. Building on the success of its previous editions, the event offers a platform for capital and technology to be directed towards African energy projects. In 2025, the event returns bigger and better than before.

Greater Focus on Projects, Emerging Opportunities

With 2025 promising to be an impactful year for Africa's energy sector, the AEW: Invest in African Energies conference will further catalyze development by connecting investors to African projects. On the project front, a slate of major developments is either progressing or will begin operations. These include the second phase of the Congo LNG project; the full operation of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim development in Senegal/Mauritania; the launch of the Cabinda Refinery in Angola; appraisal drilling in Namibia's Orange Basin, and many more. Strategic developments such as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, the Mozambique LNG project and exploratory drilling continent-wide require capital, highlighting emerging opportunities for global financiers.

Additionally, Africa's 2024/2025 licensing rounds signal a renewed drive to position the continent as a leading frontier. In North Africa, Libya plans to launch a bid round featuring 22 blocks, Egypt plans to host an international bid round for 12 exploration blocks while Algeria will launch a tender featuring 6 onshore blocks. In West Africa, Mauritania, Nigeria and Liberia will launch licensing rounds, while in Southern Africa, Angola will offer 9 blocks for exploration, Namibia is rolling out a new open-door policy and Tanzania will promote 24 oil and gas blocks in March 2025. These opportunities will be on display at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, creating an in-roads for new players.

Uniting Stakeholders to Make Energy Poverty History by 2030

As the largest energy event on the continent, AEW: Invest in African Energies convenes energy, finance and policy stakeholders from the global and African markets. From presidents and ministers to explorers and infrastructure developers to financiers and technology leaders, the event serves as the premier event for the African energy sector. This year, the event offers an expanded program, covering strategic topics such as frontier exploration, refining and processing, power development and connectivity, green hydrogen, regulation and skills development. Speakers will not only address the pressing challenges impacting the continent's energy progress but showcase the range of investment opportunities available across the continent. AEW: Invest in African Energies is where African governments meet, international energy firms sign deals, and local companies drive the next wave of energy development in Africa.

Collaborating for a Just Energy Future

While the world prioritizes the development of renewable energy over traditional energy sources, African countries seek to drive a just energy transition that incorporates a variety of energy solutions. AEW: Invest in African Energies not only promotes a just transition in Africa but offers a platform where global and African energy stakeholders can forge a new pathway for the continent. Discussions in Cape Town will center on strategies for accelerating industrialization, how technologies such as gas-to-power and LNG can reduce emissions while bolstering energy security, and the impact of integrated energy systems on African economies. By driving a narrative of inclusivity, AEW: Invest in African Energies fosters collaboration, partnerships and cross-sector investments.

Policy Alignment, Global Engagement

To attract fresh investment in African energy projects, a slate of countries has enacted policy reforms to strengthen transparency and investor certainty. Nigeria signed the Petroleum Industry Act into law; South Africa launched a new petroleum company; the Republic of Congo is preparing to launch a Gas Master Plan; while Algeria has strengthened regulation to attract local participation in oil and gas projects. In conjunction with improved fiscal terms and rules of engagement, these policies have significantly enhanced the business environment in Africa, making 2025 a strategic year to invest in African energy.
