Government seeks solutions to prevent job losses at ArcelorMittal

Government seeks solutions to prevent job losses at ArcelorMittal

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth, has reaffirmed her department’s commitment to exploring all possible interventions to prevent job losses at ArcelorMittal, one of South Africa’s largest steel producers.

The Minister met with the management of the steel giants this morning, at the Vanderbijlpark Plant, amid the looming shut down of its operations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng.

The shut down may result in the loss of 3500 jobs, and devastating ripple effects on families and businesses in surrounding areas.

Speaking after the meeting, Meth expressed optimism about the discussions, describing them as a critical step in addressing the challenges faced by the business.

“We held a successful meeting, and we also understand the challenges that the business is facing. Our main concern and responsibility is to engage and see if we can avert the situation by preventing job losses. As you know, our main mandate is employment and ensuring that we preserve the jobs,” Meth said.

The minister reiterated the government’s mandate to preserve employment, and also outlined the collaborative approach being undertaken.

“So, we had a very fruitful discussion. Of course, it was our first meeting, and we can’t say conclusively that we’ve got a solution yet. We are joining other attempts, interventions, and talks by government, led by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) - which is coordinating efforts across ministries and departments. We have started those discussions in earnest, looking at possible interventions,” the Minister said.

Acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the situation, the Minister emphasised the government’s determination to seek solutions.

“I can’t be a doomsayer and say it is inevitable that jobs will be lost. It is for that reason that we are coming together.

"Earlier on, I appreciated the commitment from the CEO and his team to engage and see how best we can intervene as government to avert the situation. So, there is hope,” she said.

The Minister further highlighted existing government measures, such as the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), as potential support for the company.

“The measures we are taking include efforts led by the DTIC, working with Treasury and other relevant departments, to explore areas where government can assist. As the Department of Employment and Labour, we have a program called the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme that helps distressed businesses. They are starting that process to see if they can be assisted through it,” Meth said. – SAnews.gov.za

Strides being made to reposition eThekwini

Location: News

Strides being made to reposition eThekwini

Stakeholders in the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) have been working hard to rebuild eThekwini as well as reposition the city as an investment and tourism attraction.

Since its establishment in April 2024, the Working Group has recorded significant developments in service delivery, business confidence, addressing infrastructure and socio-economic challenges.

According to the Working Group’s progress report, business confidence in the city increased from 38.42% in the first quarter of 2024 to 63.01% in the third quarter of the same year.

To respond to the challenges of the municipality, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Presidential Working Group (PeWG) in April 2024. The Working Group was established to accelerate support from national and provincial government to rebuild the municipality.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

While recently on a visit around the coastal city to assess the progress of the work by the Working Group, acting Government Spokesperson and Director-General of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Nomonde Mnukwa, noted an improvement in cleanliness and the high visibility of law enforcement in the metro.

With the recent opening of the Durban Beach Café by the eThekwini Municipality, Mnukwa visited the beachfront, which is a tourist attraction.

“As government, we are working together with the private sector. We want to make sure that eThekwini is an area that attracts tourists, given that tourism is a major contributor to the economy and creates jobs for the locals.

“We are pleased with the renewal of the lease for the Southern Sun Hotel Group as it will see the redevelopment of the Elangeni and Maharani hotels for a period of 50 years. The redevelopment will enable the municipality to enhance the beachfront as a key tourism asset,” she said.

The redevelopment entails an estimated capital investment of R1 billion, including the refurbishment of the Elangeni and Maharani hotels, as well as the Garden Court South Beach and The Edward hotels which are also owned by Southern Sun.

In addition, a fund of R5 million will be made available to restore and maintain the Sunken Gardens, a historically significant park owned by the municipality on the beachfront, in front of the hotels.

“These interventions will ensure that eThekwini is a vibrant city,” she said.

The eThekwini Municipality has also appointed a developer for the long-term leasing and redevelopment of the Joe Cool’s building to further enhance the aesthetics of the beachfront.

With crime being one of the challenges that act as a deterrent to holidaymakers and drive away investors, the Metro Police is working with all law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service, Road Traffic Inspectorate, and private security companies, to maintain high visibility at all tourism sites and areas that have been identified as crime hotspots.

The Metro Police procured an additional 146 vehicles last October to bolster the municipality’s crime fighting and prevention efforts.

In addition, last December, 2 699 newly trained Constables graduated and were deployed to stations and units to bolster the South African Police Service (SAPS) crime combatting efforts.

“The recent recruitment of new police officers and the work being done as part of Operation Shanela are contributing to efforts to keep citizens safe,” Mnukwa said.

Operation Shanela consists of regular stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols including foot patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects with a focus on murder and rape suspects, compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers.

Upgrading dilapidated infrastructure

During her visit to the city, Mnukwa visited the Durban Textile and Leather Incubator (DTLI), which was previously an unused building by the state. It has now been refurbished.

“The city is reviving a number of dilapidated buildings to ensure that the inner city is fully functional, safe and vibrant,” she said.

DTLI Executive Director, Dr Poppet Pillay, said the building was very old and needed extensive renovation but it was perfectly located in the city centre close to public transport, making it accessible to Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from anywhere in the province.

“The centre has 12 high-end sewing machines. Entrepreneurs have access to these machines at nominal charge. Seven entrepreneurs were sponsored to participate in the Manufacturing Indaba in July 2023 and 14 entrepreneurs were sponsored to attend the Durban Business Fair in September 2023, thus linking them to the market.

“One of the businesses, Eagle Eye, won the Best Youth SMME award valued at R50 000. Eagle Eye is currently selling branded products at the Edgars store in Gateway Umhlanga. Some of the entrepreneurs are already exporting their clothing brands internationally and one entrepreneur was invited to join the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) programme for leather production,” Pillay said.

Furthermore, two entrepreneurs were sponsored by the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce to attend the Bharath Textile Fair in India, last year April.

“We are so thrilled to see how our entrepreneurs have grown - not only as a business but also in terms of confidence and ability to market themselves,” she said.

The Incubator is the result of a partnership between the Small Enterprise Development Agency - Science and Technology Programme (SEDA STP) and eThekwini Municipality.

The business incubator supports and grows SMMEs within the Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leather Sector in eThekwini and surrounding areas by nurturing a business from idea generation to start-up companies through a comprehensive business support programme.

“Besides the normal incubation programme, DTLI has partnered with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Textile Science and Apparel Technology Dept to run a six-week Ideation Programme for their post-grad students,” Pillay said.

It has also collaborated with the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority (FP&M SETA) to run a virtual workshop on Entrepreneurship and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for 152 SMMEs in the sector.

The incubator has a cohort of 54 SMMEs and provides a range of services that includes technology transfer and access to specialized machines, access to markets, access to funding and financial management, compliance and legal, productivity and business processes. - SAnews.gov.za

Government-Business Partnership reaffirms commitment to economic growth

Government-Business Partnership reaffirms commitment to economic growth

The Government-Business Partnership has set an ambitious agenda for 2025, reaffirming its commitment to driving reforms, economic growth, and job creation.

On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa met with ministers and senior business leaders to solidify the partnership’s pledge to significantly grow South Africa's economy.

For 2025, the focus is on accelerating crucial reforms, operational improvements, and key interventions in energy, transport and logistics, crime and corruption, and youth employment.

Building on the achievements of Phase 1 of the partnership, including the significant reduction in load shedding, the partners highlighted other milestones such as the promulgation of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act (ERA) and the release of the Transnet Network Statement in December, as critical steps in driving economic transformation.

The successful full implementation of these interventions, alongside ongoing reforms through Operation Vulindlela, has the potential to lift Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth above 3%, which is vital to addressing unemployment.

South Africa needs to attract the substantial investment needed to help drive more robust and inclusive economic growth. However, the partners acknowledged the need for accelerated efforts to deliver on their ambitious plans.

The partnership is underpinned by principles of exceptional governance, clear role delineation between government and business, and a results-driven approach.

As the host of the G20 summit, and the B20, South Africa aims to showcase this partnership as a model for successful public-private collaboration. It serves as a case study for leveraging business expertise and resources to advance government policy in areas requiring transformative reforms to boost economic growth.

Looking ahead, the partnership aims to craft a more optimistic narrative for "SA Inc," attract substantial investments, and drive inclusive economic growth and job creation.

The partners emphasised the importance of seizing this moment to achieve meaningful progress and deliver tangible outcomes for the nation.

“As we begin what promises to be a momentous year, there is much progress to build on. We know that to achieve a goal of 3% economic growth will require an extraordinary effort, not just from this partnership but from all stakeholders and all South Africans.

“This means we have to remain focused and purpose-driven and accelerate implementation. Together we are moving ever closer to the promise of a thriving and inclusive economy that meets the needs of all our people,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

WEF meeting a ‘golden opportunity’ for South Africa

Location: News

WEF meeting a 'golden opportunity' for South Africa

This year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting to be held in Davos, Switzerland, will be significant for South Africa, particularly as the country takes its spot at the forum bearing the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20).

This is according to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, who addressed the pre-WEF breakfast session held in Sandton on Thursday.

The WEF annual meeting will be held from 20 January, with several Ministers, civil society and business leaders from South Africa expected to attend.

“This year’s WEF is particularly significant for South Africa. For the first time in many years, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, will lead the South African delegation. This presents a golden opportunity to not only strengthen South Africa’s visibility on the world stage, but to also profile our G20 Presidency.

“Under the theme of Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability, our G20 Presidency reflects the essence of South Africa’s vision for global leadership,” Godongwana said.

The Minister told the breakfast session – which was attended by Ministers, high ranking government officials and business leaders – that Team South Africa will be presenting a united front at the WEF meeting.

“The WEF Annual Meeting brings together a wide array of key global stakeholders. These audiences are keen to understand the opportunities and challenges facing South Africa.

“It is essential that we align our key messages to showcase our country’s strengths, address misconceptions and advance our collective priorities. By presenting a unified message, we can enhance South Africa’s standing and influence in the global community,” he said.

The local environment

Godongwana acknowledged that the South African economy still faces challenges. However, he emphasised that there are reasons for optimism.

“The third quarter contraction, combined with the slight downward revision of the second quarter GDP, resulted in modest growth of 0.4% over the first three quarters of 2024. This was below the projections included in the 2024 MTBPS [Medium Term Budget Policy Statement] macroeconomic forecast.

“However, we remain cautiously optimistic. There are significant upside risks to growth in the final quarter, including faster-than-anticipated easing of inflationary pressures, improved electricity reliability, and the stimulus effect of the withdrawals of the two-pot retirement system. While the road ahead is challenging, these positive indicators provide a foundation for stronger growth in 2025 and beyond,” he said.

The 2025 WEF annual meeting will be the first for the seventh administration and the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Godongwana said since its formation last year, the GNU has “demonstrated its potential to unite the nation and foster progress”.

“This era of governance has allowed for meaningful discussions on accelerating structural reforms.

“The positive reception from both the markets and the public has created a conducive environment for the GNU to deliver on its commitments and build an investment friendly environment,” he said.

Returning to his earlier point, the Minister reiterated the importance of “collaboration between business and government, as we prepare to present South Africa’s story on the global stage”.

“As we prepare to represent South Africa in Davos, let us remember the strength that lies in collaboration.

“Together, government and business can drive the messages that matter most, which are those of resilience, opportunity, and shared prosperity,” Godongwana concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Team South Africa heads into WEF with ‘confidence’

Team South Africa heads into WEF with 'confidence'

Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau says engagements at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting are a platform for South Africa to show that it is addressing the challenges facing the economy and the country.

The Minister was speaking during a media briefing following the pre-WEF Annual Meeting breakfast session held on Thursday.

The annual meeting will be held from Monday next week and is expected to conclude on Friday.

“I think that there is great prospect for us to ensure that we present the South African story for what it is, not what we hope it is, but what it is.

“And it doesn't suggest that…there aren’t difficulties in the country. We say we’re confronting the difficulties. We’re working on resolving the issues growing the economy and addressing our challenges,” Tau said.

The Minister said the importance of attending the WEF meeting cannot be underestimated in the face of South Africa’s ambitions to prop itself up as an investment destination of choice.

“If you look at the individual diaries of the individuals that would be there, it is quite extensive the number of people and influential business and government leaders that would be engaging. [This is] both in terms of our collective engagements with people at Davos, the different platforms that we would be engaging on, but also, in terms of the one-on-one sessions that have been scheduled for individual ministers, CEOs, Chairpersons, leaders of parastatals and so on.

“If you were to quantify the value of the engagements, I think it's quite extensive because the people that you would be engaging with that would be looking at you as a potential investment destination…or increasing their investments in the country.
“Those would be one on one sessions that are quite invaluable,” he explained.

Team South Africa

The delegation representing South Africa at the annual meeting is expected to be led by President Cyril Ramaphosa who will be joined by several Ministers and civil society and business leaders.

Speaking at the pre-WEF briefing, leaders in the South African business sector expressed support for Team South Africa heading into the annual meeting.

Standard Bank Chairperson Nonkululeko Nyembezi said the breakfast session with government emphasised the importance of “the alignment between government and business”.

“We …stress the fact that it’s not just for government to put across messaging about the country. The business community has got a singular responsibility in this regard because we’re talking to our business counterparts, talking the language they understand, telling them how we see our country evolving in our continent over the future.

“The economy is visibly growing and accelerating in that part. Clearly the electricity issue is a foundational element of that, but there are others that we can point to that show that we are getting on top of the issues.

“[But] we’ve got to keep it real. We haven’t solved every single problem, we still have unemployment that is unacceptably high etc, and those things we can be quite balanced about. footing this time around But I think Team South Africa is striding on far firmer,” Nyembezi said.

Discovery CEO, Adrian Gore, said South Africa’s showing at the WEF meeting will be “different”.

“I think from a business perspective, I think there is an unequivocal feeling that this year is different. The country…hopefully at a point of inflection. There are tremendous challenges that remain.

“But…I think ironically the theme of WEF is collaboration and, if anything, our country is illustrating that both in the GNU [and] certainly in the business-government partnership that is a fundamentally powerful construct.

“It’s…become a very well governed structure of cadence and uniqueness and is delivering very, very well to the country. So, there are a number of attributes we feel very confident about going into WEF,” Gore said. – SAnews.gov.za

eThekwini invests millions to upgrade infrastructure

eThekwini invests millions to upgrade infrastructure

Just like many cities in South Africa, eThekwini is experiencing urban decay due to migration for economic opportunities, property abandonment, service delivery and crime.

These conditions were exacerbated, in part, by the catastrophic floods in 2022 that destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, communication and electrical systems.

To respond to the challenges of the municipality, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Presidential Working Group (PeWG) in April 2024.

The Working Group was established to accelerate support from national and provincial government to rebuild the municipality.

Since its establishment, the Working Group has provided support and fast-tracked efforts by the eThekwini municipality to improve service delivery, improve business confidence, and reposition eThekwini as an investment and tourism attraction.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

Developing the informal economy

Last November, the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality announced plans to develop the informal economy sector by upgrading the infrastructure used by traders.

These projects include the R10 million upgrade of the Dalton Art and Craft Market, R15 million upgrade for the Mansel Road Market, R2.5 million upgrade for the Tongaat Trader Market, R4 million upgrade for the KwaMaKhutha Business Hive (Ward 94) and the R4.3 million upgrade for the Klaarwater Business Hive (Ward 17).

Traders at the Mansel Road Market were visited by Small Business Development Minister Stella-Ndabeni-Abrahams last year.

“The Minister handed over about 100 sewing machines, equipment for those running food handling facilities such as freezers, pots, gas stoves, and microwaves.

“This doesn’t happen anywhere on the continent where the government freely provides equipment to informal traders. This shows us that our government is taking care of us,” Chairman for Mansel Road Market Traders Mboneni Qwabe told SAnews during a visit to the site recently.

eThekwini Municipality Senior Manager for the Informal Economy, Michael Hlangu, said the Mansel Road Market was a hive of activity during weekends with customers coming from all over South Africa and other countries on the continent.
The retail market offers among others clothing, food stalls, traditional drums, bedding, and traditional attire.
About 180 traders operating at the market are expected to benefit from the refurbishment of the facility, which includes a new building with new ablution facilities, electricity, water and a parking area.

“We have 184 container traders. Some of the containers are dilapidated. We are planning to convert the containers into brick and mortar. We have appointed contractors for the project and the traders will be relocated this month to a new location so the construction of the project can commence.

“During the construction phase it is anticipated that about 100 people will benefit from job opportunities. All traders that are operating in this facility have been registered with the municipality.

“The majority of them have business licences and they renew them on an annual basis. The rental for the food section [is] R664 per month and they sign a lease agreement with the municipality. We regularly conduct training on health and safety to ensure that the vendors comply with the regulations and by-laws,” Hlangu explained.

The municipality is responsible for maintaining the facility, which includes providing security, cleaning services and electricity.

Making a difference

Qwabe said the municipality hosts business summits each year and updates traders on the work being done to uplift the informal economy.

“There is a lot of work that has been done to improve the operations of the traders. When this place was opened in 1996, there were no containers. People were selling from their cars under the carport, and this was changed to containers, but the containers have deteriorated over the years.

“The municipality has come to assist the traders as they are now building a new structure for us. We have seen the plan and it’s good. We will be able to attract tourists with the new building,” he said.

Qwabe further explained that Mansel Road Market is a hub for traditional attire.

“It’s unfortunate that tourists don’t visit this area. I don’t think that when they return to their home countries, they have enough to show that they were in South Africa.

“We are the Zulu kingdom and in the Zulu kingdom there are items that showcase the Zulu culture, and you will find them here. We have unique items that you won’t find anywhere else. We would like the market to be a tourist attraction,” Qwabe said. -SAnews.gov.za

Transforming eThekwini into a safer city

Location: News

Transforming eThekwini into a safer city

The city of eThekwini is famous for its year round warm weather; its pristine beaches; its rich Zulu heritage and its friendly people.

These attractions make the coastal city an ideal place for investors to do business in Durban.

However, in recent years, the economic powerhouse of KwaZulu-Natal has lost some of its appeal due to among other things, contamination at its beaches, a decline in tourism, water supply challenges, an increase in crime, dilapidated infrastructure and challenges with maintaining cleanliness.

To return the city to its former glory, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) in April 2024.

The PeWG is a multi-stakeholder mechanism crafted to address critical service delivery, infrastructure and socio-economic challenges within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality with the goal of positioning the city as an investment and tourism hub.

It operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

With crime being one of the challenges that act as a deterrent to holidaymakers and drive away investors in the city, the South African Police Service (SAPS) working together with the city, has increased crime combating operations and deployed more boots on the ground to ensure visibility.

In the lead up to the festive season, between 1 October and 15 November 2024, over 31 491 law enforcement officers from SAPS and 1538 metro police officers were deployed in eThekwini to enhance community safety through high-density operations. These operations are ongoing and continued throughout the festive season.

Speaking exclusively to SAnews about law enforcement operations in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, said the collaboration with the Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies was producing great results.

“As the SAPS, working together with the Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies, we have been able to push back on crime. We have been able to increase patrols, intelligence collection and crime combating operations.

“We have also been able to create an environment that enables business to operate. Our mission is to create a conducive environment for business to operate and function so that our citizens can get employment," Mkhwanazi said.

According to the progress report by the Working Group, business confidence in 2024 increased by 24.59%. In the first quarter, business confidence stood at 38.42% and increased to 63.01% in the third quarter.

“We must appreciate the intervention from national government through the Working Group. With the collaborative efforts of working with other government departments that are driving tourism and the security cluster, we have seen an increase in the recruitment of metro police officers that joined the service to ensure that we have more officers on the ground.

“As the SAPS, we have also received new Constables that were recruited and deployed in this area to ensure visibility on the ground. We are deploying strategically in key areas that are a hotspot for crime, and we have been able to reduce criminal activities in those areas,” he said.

As a result, residents can enjoy going for a jog at the beach front as early as 4am in the morning, as law enforcement operations are being implemented around the clock.

“We have maximum visibility by using blue light patrols which enables people to see our presence when the sun goes down. Anyone witnessing crime can easily reach out to law enforcement officials.

“We have increased the foot patrols to ensure that we can reach places that we would ordinarily not see when we are driving in the vehicles. We have procured motorbikes and deployed bicycles in the beachfront as well as in the city.

“We are confident with the operations that we are running in the city. We are seeing an increase in tourists visiting the city and business confidence. We are also partnering with the private sector’s security companies that are looking after business establishments in the city,” Mkhwanazi said.

Last November, the city announced that it was transferring its Closed-Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) to the Metro Police Unit and Fire and Emergency Unit for management to enhance crime fighting and public safety while ensuring coordinated efforts to respond effectively to disasters.

The transfer included the Emergency Mobilising and Communication Centre (EMACC) and the technical services functions, which are being transferred to the Information Management Unit under the Office of the City Manager.

“In the past, these cameras were being controlled by Disaster Management, which was a challenge for law enforcement to utilise and operate them. With the transfer, the police have easy access to the cameras and as a result the response time to crime is shorter.

“Law enforcement can respond with speed because we have police officers monitoring the cameras and guide the members on the ground to respond to criminal activities. These are some of the results that we are seeing due to the work of the Working Group. Technology play a big role in in our crime fighting efforts,” the provincial Police Commissioner said.

Between 1 October and 15 November 2024, operations by SAPS officers and metro police officers saw 1 500 arrests, 150 undocumented persons were arrested, 322 suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and 58 949 drugs were recovered. - SAnews.gov.za

Police arrest 16 718 suspects during nationwide Operation Shanela

Police arrest 16 718 suspects during nationwide Operation Shanela

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested 16 718 suspects during its Operation Shanela crime crackdown, which ran from 6 - 12 January 2025, targeting criminal activities across the country.

“Through Operation Shanela, SAPS continues to take a bold and decisive approach in dealing with crime in the country. These crime fighting activities include tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches, as well as tracing of wanted suspects,” SAPS said in a statement.

All Shanela operations are led by the Provincial Commissioner of each province.

Just this week alone, the following arrests were made:

  •  2 907 wanted suspects were arrested. These suspects were wanted for various serious and violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, business and house robberies.
  • 122 suspects were arrested for murder. The majority of these suspects (36) were arrested in Gauteng, followed by the Eastern Cape (29).
  • 112 suspects were arrested for attempted murder.
  • 223 suspects were arrested for rape. The majority (80) were arrested KwaZulu-Natal.
  • 1 845 suspects were arrested for assault grievous bodily harm.
  • 835 drug dealers were arrested.
  • 2 282 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs, with the majority (1 088) of these suspects arrested in the Western Cape.
  • 129 suspects were arrested for being in the illegal possession of firearms, and the majority of these suspects were arrested in KZN (36).
  • 1 341 illegal foreign nationals were also arrested during this period
  • 419 drivers were arrested for drunken driving, with the majority of arrests in Gauteng (114).

Police registered the following successes:

  • 129 firearms were confiscated in the past week.
  • 1 129 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated.
  • 65 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered during this week’s operations.

The police also highlighted major successes, which include the arrest of a 39-year-old man by police in Mpumalanga following a shooting incident where eight people were shot and killed outside a tavern in Pienaar on Saturday.

The team confiscated a pistol and ammunition during his arrest and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Police in Limpopo also apprehended eight suspects, including a councillor, on allegations of extortion at a construction site along the R555 road in Roossenekal, on 9 January 2025.

In a separate incident, a joint operation conducted by Sandringham SAPS, Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and a private security company led to the arrest of three Ethiopian foreign nationals suspected of trafficking in persons, kidnapping, extortion and contravention of the Immigration Act.

The team acted on a tip-off from neighbours about suspicious activities at a house in Sandringham and found 26 Ethiopian nationals who were held captive inside the house. A pistol and one magazine were also seized.

Operation Vala Umgodi task teams continue to record commendable successes in the country.

Just last week alone, police arrested 62 suspects for illegal mining, and the majority of these suspects were arrested in the Free State.

A joint operation by Northern Cape Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime, North West Organised Crime, and Potchefstroom Public Order Police led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man suspected of business robbery in Potchefstroom. The team seized a pistol with its serial number filed off.

Meanwhile, police in Mpumalanga arrested three men who allegedly shot and killed three men in an incident related to taxi conflict in Piet Retief on 9 January 2025.

Four firearms, including a rifle and three pistols with ammunition, were seized in the incident. The three suspects are facing three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

“Police will continue with their operations by asserting the authority of the State to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors to the country,” the SAPS said. – SAnews.gov.za

Police seize counterfeit goods in Musina

Police seize counterfeit goods in Musina

Counterfeit and illicit goods valued at over R5 million have been seized in a police operation in Musina, Limpopo.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with its crime-fighting partners, conducted an operation that was spearheaded by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, with support from the SAPS Gauteng Drone Team, including the Bloemfontein K9 Unit, South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs, and brand protectors on Sunday.

A roving team comprising SAPS members from specialised units deployed in Limpopo, as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, also participated in the operation.

The team executed a search-and-seizure warrant at a shopping mall in Musina's central business district.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, said more than 2 000 counterfeit and illicit items, including sneakers, clothing, cellphone accessories, perfume and consumables, were confiscated during the operation.

She said two Eritrean nationals and one Bangladeshi national, all asylum seekers, were arrested for dealing in counterfeit goods.

The Bangladeshi national faces an additional charge for bribery after attempting to bribe officers at the scene to evade arrest.

“On the same day, the team stopped and searched vehicles in the area, which led them to arrest a suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle. The members also seized dagga and drugs found abandoned in a taxi after the driver and commuters fled the scene on foot,” Van Wyk said in a statement.

Van Wyk noted that while primarily tasked with addressing crimes associated with illicit mining, the members contribute to combating a broader range of criminal activities in the province.

She said SAPS, together with its partners, remains steadfast in its efforts to eliminate the illegal trade of counterfeit and illicit goods, which poses risks to consumers, harm legitimate businesses, and undermine the economy of the country. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN CoGTA moves to address Ray Nkonyeni Municipality challenges

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has intervened to resolve the impasse at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, which has halted service delivery.

Buthelezi convened a meeting with ratepayers, including business representatives, trade unions and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality leaders, to resolve the three-month-long workers' strike, which has affected service delivery.

Held at the municipality’s council chamber in Port Shepstone last Friday, the meeting was attended by the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Deputy Mayor, Sibusiso Shange, various representatives from business forums, tourism businesses, amakhosi, and ratepayers.

The strike has devastated service delivery in the key tourism hub, causing significant financial losses to businesses and forcing residents to seek alternative solutions for essential services, including waste collection, water and electricity.

The dispute between the municipality and its employees stems from an arbitration award related to back pay and the regrading of workers following the 2016 merger of Ezinqolweni and Hibiscus Coast Local Municipalities to form Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

The municipality appealed the arbitration decision, and the matter remains unresolved in the Labour Court.

In October 2024, workers commenced industrial action, demanding the municipality honour the award.

During the meeting on Friday, Buthelezi provided all stakeholders with an opportunity to express their concerns and propose solutions.

Business and tourism representatives emphasised the heavy losses incurred due to the lack of service delivery, while amakhosi called for an urgent resolution, highlighting the negative impact on businesses and residents’ well-being.

Buthelezi said the municipality could have handled this matter with greater diligence to avoid a complete shutdown.

The MEC said it was the department’s responsibility to mediate and give all parties a final opportunity to engage constructively and resolve the issue.

He said some aspects of the situation could have been better managed.

"[However] before we take decisive action, we are allowing a two-week period for resolution.

“Our primary aim is to safeguard jobs and ensure that businesses do not continue to suffer irreparable harm. When businesses close, people lose jobs – something we must prevent at all costs.

“All stakeholders, including amakhosi, have expressed their desire for an end to the strike and we expect an amicable solution to be reached by 31 January 2025. Should this not occur, the department will have no choice but to implement further interventions,” Buthelezi said.

The MEC is expected to return to the municipality on 31 January 2025 to review progress and take further action. – SAnews.gov.za

Mukuru Launches Mobile Wallet in Zimbabwe to Bolster Financial Inclusion

Location: News
MukuruNext-generation financial services platform Mukuru (www.Mukuru.com) has launched a mobile wallet in Zimbabwe called Mukuru Wallet. The secure digital store of value follows Mukuru's award of a Deposit-Taking Microfinance Institution (DTMFI) licence in Zimbabwe by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

Building on Mukuru's trusted capabilities, which support more than three-million Zimbabwean customers, the wallet has several benefits, including its standout features: two pockets that allow users to send and receive money locally and internationally from mobile phones, safe storage of funds as well as a free cashout on international transfers.

Marc Carrie-Wilson, Send Money Home Zimbabwe CEO says: “The Mukuru Wallet is a significant development in the country because we have built a reputable brand by consistently ensuring cash availability when needed. To avoid disappointing people who travel long distances to receive their remittances which they use for food, school fees and other essential services, we now have 250 of our own service points. With a network stretching across urban and rural areas, we can reach more people than ever, providing constant cash availability and valuable digital solutions, such as the Mukuru Wallet, to the underserved communities.”

Mukuru Zimbabwe Financial Services CEO, Doug Tait-Knight, says: “Mukuru takes its role as a fintech driving financial inclusion seriously. With this wallet, we tap into our strength which lies in our robust network and technology, as well as our crispy notes that are always available, making this an exciting moment in our evolution in Zimbabwe.

“The wallet environment enables us to start providing additional value such as allowing more affordable domestic money transfers, supporting safety by eliminating the need for customers to walk around with large sums of money, and providing convenience and cost savings, such as paying for electricity, buying airtime, settling DSTV bills and paying for insurance from their couch. Our use of multiple channels also ensures accessibility for our customers,” explains Tait-Knight.

While currently focusing on private end users, soon organisations will be able to partner with Mukuru to make use of its local capabilities and global footprint to facilitate payments, such as distributing money to farmers, supporting payroll for small businesses and securing traceable aid distributions. Various organisations such as Cottco and the United Nations, through the World Food Programme, and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) already partner with Mukuru.

Kevin Nyakotyo, Mukuru's Enterprise Sales Manager for Zimbabwe and Zambia, added, “Our success in the end-user sector has enabled us to set in motion plans to enter the business sector. Whether it is for tobacco or cotton, payments made to farmers are often large sums of money. The Mukuru Wallet will make receiving these large sums of money far safer because beneficiaries won't need to draw all their cash at the same time.

“We have a mandate to educate the market based on trends we see, and with this wallet, we are reaching out to both organisations and individuals and giving them peace of mind to know their funds will be safe and can be collected at any time. They can draw an amount that suits them with full confidence the cash will be available wherever they are, whenever they need it,” says Nyakotyo.

SA’s natural resources can drive inclusive growth: President Ramaphosa

SA’s natural resources can drive inclusive growth: President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s tourism sector, largely underpinned by its natural endowments, has great potential to drive inclusive growth.

“As the festive season makes way for the start of the new year, many South Africans have been returning home from different parts of the country. Some people have been visiting family, while others have been exploring new places.

“This is a time of year when we get to appreciate why our country is such an attractive destination for visitors. We are blessed with natural splendour that is an integral part of our national heritage. It is an asset to our economy that every year draws millions of tourists from around the world to our shores,” the President said in his newsletter to the nation on Monday.

Over the past week, the President was in the Western Cape and visited Robben Island, which is one of the country’s major tourism attractions. A leading industry publication recently ranked Robben Island, alongside Table Mountain and the Kruger National Park, as among the top tourist attractions on the continent.

Beyond the substantial natural resource endowments of the beaches, national parks and biodiversity conservation areas, cultural and heritage tourism is also thriving in South Africa.

“We are home to 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include Robben Island and the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng, which has among the largest known concentrations of Hominid fossils in the world.

“Last year, the World Economic Forum ranked South Africa as Africa’s premier tourism destination. It said this was due to factors such as our business operating environment, information technology and tourism infrastructure and services,” President Ramaphosa said.

Following a slump in tourism numbers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, inbound tourism is on the rise. In 2023, South Africa recorded around 8.5 million international tourist arrivals. These visitors spent over R95 billion.

Domestic tourism is the mainstay of the tourism economy. Between January and July last year, South Africans took over 21 million trips to explore their country.

President Ramaphosa said the tourism sector has the potential to be even larger than it currently is.

“We are scaling up a range of tourism promotion strategies to restore inbound tourism figures to pre-pandemic levels. These strategies include an improved tourism visa regime, streamlining the tour operator license process, increased investment in tourism infrastructure and services, and improving safety and security at tourism sites.”

The tourism sector in South Africa employs about 1.5 million people both directly and indirectly. Through the Presidential Employment Stimulus, South Africa continues to support job creation by providing work opportunities for young people as tourism monitors in different provinces and supporting tourism-related SMMEs.

Tourism is a growth area for small business development. In line with the global shift towards sustainability, figures from South African Tourism show that increasing numbers of new tourism ventures are centred around sustainable tourism and eco-friendly business practices.

This year, South Africa will host the first ever summit of the G20 on African soil.

“We will use this opportunity to profile and actively promote South Africa as a tourism destination of choice,” President Ramaphosa said.

According to UN Tourism, the G20 economies represent over 70% of all international tourist arrivals worldwide and 82% of tourism’s global GDP. Just as Brazil did last year during its hosting of the G20 Summit, South Africa will promote the role of tourism in creating jobs and advancing sustainable development in the countries of the Global South.

The Government of National Unity has identified the growth of tourism as a vital part of creating employment. In October last year, the Minister of Tourism released a new White Paper on the Development and Promotion of Tourism in South Africa. This will guide our approach to building a sustainable, competitive and inclusive tourism industry.

“By working together as government, business and communities, we can ensure that the natural splendour of our country becomes a driver of economic growth, job creation and shared prosperity,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

Hendricks commends engagement on sustainable food security

Social Development Deputy Minister, Ganief Hendricks, has expressed his satisfaction at the success of the stakeholder engagement on sustainable livelihoods, food security, and nutrition.

The inaugural engagement, held in Pietermaritzburg, in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands on Thursday, brought together key stakeholders from all three spheres of government, including local councillors, representatives from the national department, business leaders and members of the public.

The event marked a major step in fostering collaboration between government, business and communities to ensure that South Africa’s food security and poverty eradication goals are met effectively.

It was aimed at informing the community about the role of the department’s directorate and the ways it can assist those it serves.

In his address, Hendricks emphasised the importance of food security, underscoring the goal that “no child should ever go to bed hungry”.

Hendricks stressed the need for stakeholders to work together, not just to alleviate poverty, but to completely eradicate it - especially food poverty.

“The community-based initiatives and collaborative efforts play a critical role in ensuring the success of these objectives.”

Officials from both the national and provincial department in attendance committed to the visions outlined by the Deputy Minister, which reinforces shared determination to fight food insecurity, poverty, and to support sustainable livelihoods across the country.

The engagement concluded with an in-loco inspection of a farming blueprint in Hardingdale, Msunduzi.

The blueprint, which showcases a successful model for food security, poverty eradication, and sustainable livelihoods, is being presented as a model that other communities can adopt and replicate for their benefit. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President delivers eulogy at former Minister’s funeral

Location: News

Deputy President delivers eulogy at former Minister's funeral

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has described the late democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Education, Professor Sibusiso Bengu, as a “distinguished educator, diplomat and a servant of the people”.

The Deputy President was delivering the eulogy at Bengu’s funeral service held at the University of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

Bengu passed away in December at the age of 90 and was afforded a Special Official Funeral Category 2.

“Today we gather to pay tribute to a remarkable individual, Professor Sibusiso Bengu, a renowned revolutionary, an intellectual of his time. As a country, we have lost a distinguished educator, diplomat and a servant of the people.

“Professor Bengu has played a key role in shaping education and other social policies contributing to the transformation of the sector and most importantly, reversing the legacy of Apartheid education,” Deputy President Mashatile said.

Bengu played a key role in the transformation of South Africa’s education sector following the attainment of democracy and played a role in the transition of higher education in the country.

The Deputy President highlighted this as part of Bengu’s legacy.

“His skills, knowledge and contribution to various sectors of educations showed that he possessed the capacity to revolutionise education by dismantling the dreadful legacies of Apartheid.
“Thirty years later, our education outcomes are still improving – a testament to the profound impact of this icon. As part of President [Nelson] Mandela’s cabinet, he introduced many key pieces of legislation that shaped our education system.

“Among these are the South African Schools Act of 1996 and the policy recommendations of the National Commission on Higher Education which served as a guide for the government’s efforts to reconstruct and transform the apartheid higher education system,” Deputy President Mashatile explained.

The former Minister advocated for understanding the “connection between education and development”.

“We must continue to address challenges related to access to better education. An educated society has better prospects for a better future and breaking the shackles of poverty and injustices.

“Educated populations correspond with national economic growth and both directly and indirectly increase economic productivity.”

Beyond 30 years of freedom

The Deputy President said that as the country now moves beyond 30 years since the attainment of freedom and democracy, government was “going to invest in the speed of policy execution and implementation”.

“This is to ensure that the critical transformation policy contributions made by Professor Bengu are not undermined and that we continue to drive the change that we are pursuing in this sector.

“Our task is to ensure that the state, institutions of higher education, and the private sector will expand the ten growth sectors, which include finance, manufacturing, agriculture, business, and services, amongst others.

“Our goal is to create much-needed employment while also ensuring that many young people, women, and the most disadvantaged individuals have meaningful participation in the economy. We have also agreed that emerging from the 2024 elections, we are going to focus on growing an inclusive economy and reducing the cost of living,” he said.

Furthermore, Mashatile added, government is actively “investing in the building of a developmental, capable, and ethical state that has the capacity to transform society and redirect development to resolve the challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality”.

The Deputy President passed his final condolences to the Bengu family on behalf of the government of South Africa.

“As we accompany our leader and brother to his final resting place, may we always remember how Professor Sibusiso Bengu's political efforts have been vital in furthering our democratic values and socio-economic development.

“His passion to promote equality and fairness has had a long-lasting influence on our society, and this should inspire us. To this day many South Africans, are still benefiting from his immense contribution, and for this we are grateful.

“Once more, on behalf of the government, let me extend our deepest condolences to Mama Funeka, his children and grandchildren, and the entire Bengu family.”

The Deputy President called on society to follow Bengu’s example and “strive for excellence in everything we do”.

“Let his example guide us and his spirit, inspire us to make a positive impact in our country,” he said.

Proceedings at the funeral included ceremonial elements rendered by the South African Police Service.  – SAnews.gov.za

A Booming Continent Needs a New Payment Infrastructure

Location: Business
MultiChoice Group

Africa is an exciting, vibrant and creative place to do business. But make no mistake, it has its challenges. Currency devaluation, political instability, and service disruptions are endemic. Africa is not for sissies, as the saying goes.

In navigating those challenges, relationships matter. It's not so much about throwing money at a problem, it's about investing time, building trust, meeting with partners and regulators, and understanding each other's needs.

Africa offers an enormous upside for those prepared to make this time investment. The continent's population is set to reach 2.5 billion (http://apo-opa.co/3W7Kp4w) by 2050, and Africa's people are embracing digital technology, as the World Bank (http://apo-opa.co/3Waln4F) confirms. They are leveraging digital connectivity to improve their lives, educate themselves, send remittances, and start small enterprises. There is value in investing in that level of human development.

The payments opportunity

Running through this African growth trajectory is a particular business thread: payments (http://apo-opa.co/3WawLxk). There are opportunities for anyone who can simplify, rationalise and standardise payments for the continent's dynamic financial economy.

An organisation in just such a position is MultiChoice (www.Multichoice.com/), the leading pan-African video entertainment provider for almost 40 years. In building a pay-TV network across the continent, with up to 23.5 million (http://apo-opa.co/3WawOJw) customers across 50+ markets, and 100 million+ monthly viewers, MultiChoice also built relationships across the continent to collect payments, for DStv, GOtv, and Showmax – potentially the only large enterprise to need such enormous breadth.

The Group has converted the opportunity that this represents, partnering with global venture-capital firm General Catalyst and payments company Rapyd to launch Moment (http://apo-opa.co/4ad1H5N), which aims to be the broadest, deepest payment network across Africa.

Launching with Showmax and DStv as initial clients, Moment started processing payments for parts of the group in January 2024. By November 2024 MultiChoice was already collecting around 35% of its revenue through Moment rails, and those numbers are rising quickly. Services to other enterprises were rolled out in August.

Moment already collects and disburses across 44 African countries, accepting 200+ local payment methods – spanning in-person payments at over 1 million store and agent locations, mobile money, credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets.

Enabling consumers and businesses to move from cash to digital, Moment and its network offers users access to better financial opportunities, lower prices, higher quality goods and services, and full access to the digitally enabled economy.

Expanding the ecosystem

To access the initial target market of large enterprises that will benefit from the reach, breadth, and high performance needed by MultiChoice, Moment has built out a fully cloud-native infrastructure. The platform can deliver on the high daily and weekly loads needed for one of the largest billing bases on the continent, and also smoothly deal with the potential for network outages, power cuts, and other disruptions.

In order to ensure businesses have access to the daily cash flow they need, Moment has built a robust financial reconciliation and settlement system capable of automating and simplifying the daily reconciliation process for enterprises and enabling them to spend tight staffing budgets efficiently, while getting fast, accurate financial reporting and access to their receivables.

To help these enterprise customers expand their customer bases, Moment opens up the largest mass-market suite of payment channels through its network, enabling businesses to fully tap into the mass market's buying power for the first time with a single API connection – providing access to more than a million in-person payment locations across spaza shops, modern retail locations, and a host of online payment options tuned to the needs of each local market.

To ensure that Moment's clients and the market are ready for the future, Moment is building a “coalition” around real-time payments, to educate consumers on the benefits of PayShap and other real-time payment methods that can significantly reduce cost and increase payment speed. DStv and Moment launched PayShap payments in South Africa as the first “consumer to business” real-time payment option built on South Africa's RPP payments system. Moment has developed partnerships with similar systems in the SADC countries and Nigeria to expand real-time payments as the market evolves.

Simplifying the process

One of the reasons MultiChoice first looked at the payments space was precisely because it is a complex environment, characterised by multiple service agreements, commission rates and exchange rates. It made sense to try to simplify the payments landscape, for everyone's benefit.

Africa is a challenging territory, but Africans are agile and innovative. Trends and new solutions emerge constantly. Any platform entering this space must recognise that there isn't one answer; there are many. By partnering with MultiChoice, Moment has built out technology with the flexibility to configure the right solution for each market.

The upsides of building for the challenging scale of MultiChoice as a launch client are significant – other enterprises Moment is working with have built unwieldy daily financial operations to manage their own complexity. Anecdotally, one merchant maintains a staff of 75 people doing reconciliations for their business – operations that can be automated and streamlined leveraging the Moment platform. Moment presents a vast opportunity in simplifying that process, automating it, while enabling customers to focus on their core business and customer relationships.

Africa is the largest single opportunity in the world. As our population booms over the next 20 years, many new business foundations will need to be laid across the continent – especially in the area of payments.

Payments are the lifeblood of Africa's economy. Enabling them efficiently and cost-effectively, across the continent, ensures Africa performs to its full potential. Through the partnership with MultiChoice, Moment is well positioned to be at the core of this transformation for decades to come.

DTIC notes ArcelorMittal South Africa’s decision

Location: News

DTIC notes ArcelorMittal South Africa’s decision

The steel industry is critical in the reconstruction and recovery plan for the South African economy, particularly the manufacturing, mining, construction, engineering, and transportation sectors, said the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic).

In a statement responding to ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (AMSA) announcement to wind down its longs steel business at its Newcastle plant, the department said the steel industry is important to the sectors that are at the centre of the industrialisation, localisation and beneficiation programmes of government.

“The department notes with serious concern the announcement by ArcelorMittal South Africa to wind down its longs steel business at its Newcastle plant. In fulfilment of its mandate to work with the private sector in growing the local economy the dtic remains committed to working with AMSA to find a workable and lasting situation,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.

During the course of 2024, AMSA had reached out to various government departments and state-owned entities with requests for different concessions for their business. Having taken heed of these requests, the Minister of the dtic took the decision to form a comprehensive and coordinated approach to resolving the issues raised by AMSA.

“In doing so, the Minister set up a technical working group made up of the relevant stakeholders including the dtic and AMSA, the departments of Electricity and Energy, Transport, as well as Eskom, Transnet and private sector stakeholders.”

The department said the working group held regular engagements up until and well into December 2024.

“This work has been noted in the statement released by AMSA. It has always been, and continues to be the intention of government to continue these engagements until a workable resolution to the problems faced by AMSA and the steel industry is reached,” said the department.

In a press statement on Monday, AMSA said it had taken the decision to wind down the longs business.

“This comes after sustained challenges, including weak economic growth, high logistics and energy costs, and an influx of low-cost steel imports, particularly from China. Persistent high logistics and energy costs, combined with insufficient policy interventions (especially those policy decisions made some time ago (namely, the Price Preference System [PPS] and export scrap tax) relating to the substantial subsidisation of scrap-based steelmaking operations to the detriment of the Newcastle Works - which beneficiates South African-sourced raw materials), have left the longs business unsustainable. Despite extensive consultations with government and stakeholders to find viable solutions to sustain the longs business, progress was insufficient to avert the wind down,” said AMSA.

In its statement on Wednesday, the dtic said that while the immediate task will be on addressing structural issues affecting AMSA’s longs steel business, the broader focus should also be on addressing productivity improvements and supply chain efficiencies, investments in low-carbon technologies, competitiveness and regaining the market share.

“It is also important that public and private sector’ entities and companies commit themselves to procure locally manufactured steel products in their projects. Undoubtedly, such a commitment will contribute positively to aggregate demand, job creation and economic growth in South Africa,” it said.

“AMSA will now transition the longs business into care and maintenance. Steel production is anticipated to cease by late January 2025, with the wind-down of the remaining production processes completed in Q1 2025,” said AMSA.

This wind down decision will directly affect operations constituting Newcastle (in KwaZulu-Natal) and Vereeniging Works (in Gauteng) and AMRAS (the rail and structural subsidiary).

Deputy Ministers engage communities affected by crime

The Police Ministry, led by the Deputy Ministers of Police Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo, will lead a crime prevention imbizo in communities affected by high levels of crime on Tuesday.

According to police, the purpose of the community engagements is to find lasting solutions to communities affected by gun and gang violence.

A multidisciplinary team comprising the SAPS Sekhukhune Task Team, Operation Vala Umgodi members and private security, rearrested Zimbabwean fugitive, Lovemore Musoyi, after escaping from police custody.

The 32-year-old is facing more than 10 criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, armed robberies, house robberies, business robberies, kidnapping, assaults, stock theft, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition that occurred in Elandskraal, Motetema, Dennilton and Rakgoadi policing areas in Sekhukhune District.

Hlabisa commends Matatiele communities for safe return of initiates

The Minister of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, joined the community of Phamotse village in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, as they welcomed back home 114 initiates this past weekend.

The cultural and traditional event brought the community together in celebration, characterised by song and dance.

The Minister was accompanied by the Eastern Cape CoGTA MEC, Zolile Williams, as well as the leadership of the Matatiele Local Municipality and traditional leaders from the surrounding area.

Hlabisa applauded the safe return of the initiates, emphasising that this is "what is needed across the country".

“As we welcome the 114 initiates, we remember the families whose children were unable to return from initiation schools in the Eastern Cape.”

The Minister once again conveyed sincere condolences, on behalf of government, to the families that lost their children after at least 28 initiates died in the province.

Hlabisa stressed that the safe return of the 114 initiates meant it was possible for all initiates across the country to return to their homes safely.

“We should all be motivated to engage as stakeholders in finding a lasting solution that will ensure the safe return of our initiates. The safe return of initiates anywhere across the country confirms that our tradition and culture do not kill.

“We should use successes like the one we are celebrating in Matatiele today as an important case study to benchmark and learn from, as we practice this important age-old culture and tradition, which must be protected,” Hlabisa said.

He described the initiates who went through the rite of passage to manhood as the "pride of the tradition and culture".

“We should all come together and declare zero tolerance to the death of initiates. This means that going forward, it cannot be business as usual,” he stressed.

Hlabisa warned against those who continue to “disrespect” the cultural practice and disregard norms and standards, as contained in the Customary Initiation Act. He said they will face the full might of the law.

The summer initiation season unfolded within extreme weather conditions, as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) predicted a heatwave for the same period.

This meant that extra care had to be taken, including ensuring that all initiates were well hydrated.

The Minister commended the local traditional leader, Morena Tsheliso Lepheana, for his guidance during the time of initiation.

Hlabisa also encouraged the leaders to take a stand against various societal ills and protect women and children.

The MEC echoed the Minister’s words that to ensure safer initiation seasons, it will take the involvement of all role players and stakeholders.

The Minister will continue to engage with traditional leaders and other stakeholders on all issues around safe traditional initiation. – SAnews.gov.za

2025 a year of “great hope” – President Ramaphosa

2025 a year of "great hope" - President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all South Africans to rally together for a better future for all in the New Year.

The President was addressing the nation on Tuesday afternoon on New Years’ Eve.

“As we can embark on a New Year, I call on each and every South African to be part of the journey towards a better future for all. I wish you all a peaceful and prosperous New Year in 2025,” he said.

Looking back
President Ramaphosa called 2024 a year of “change and progress”.

He remarked that this year, South Africans celebrated “the progress made in building a society founded on the ideals of freedom, equality and human rights” as 30 years of Freedom was marked in April.

This was demonstrated in the free and fair elections held this year.

“On the 29th of May 2024, we held our seventh democratic elections peacefully and freely. As the people of South Africa voted for the representatives of their choice, they gave voice to their concerns, their aspirations and their concerns.

“Our people, through their votes, called on political parties to put their differences aside and to work together to put South Africa first. As elected public representatives and acting on the outcomes of the elections, that gave no single party an outright majority to govern South Africa on its own, we heeded the clear message from our people.

“We established a Government of National Unity [GNU], bringing together parties from across the political spectrum. This…GNU, made up of ten political parties committed through the Statement of Intent it adopted to grow an inclusive economy and to create jobs,” he explained.

President Ramaphosa added that the GNU also committed to reduce poverty and lower the cost of living.

“The parties are all working to strengthen the capacity of the State and to deliver services to our people. The outcomes of the May 2024 elections and the establishment of the [GNU] have really enabled South Africa to enter a new era that holds great promise.

“Our economy is slowly but steadily improving, more South Africans are finding jobs. Inflation has been falling making essential goods more affordable for households,” he said.

He also highlighted “increased investment” in roads, rail, public housing, energy, water and sanitation and infrastructure as well as improved business confidence to invest.

“As this happens, more jobs will be created, more livelihoods will be supported, and more local businesses will be sustained. The far-reaching reforms that we started in the Sixth Administration are beginning to show results.

“We are emerging from a debilitating energy crisis that cost immense hardships for our people, households and businesses. Our logistics sector, which is critical to the functioning of our economy has shown notable improvement following the corrective initiatives that we embarked upon in partnership with business, labour and Transnet,” he said.

Those initiatives, the President explained, will “encourage greater investment and make them more efficient”.

Fighting crime

President Ramaphosa said focused efforts – through Operation Shanela and others – have resulted in law enforcement dealing decisively with organised crime, illegal mining, extortion and other priority crimes.
Furthermore, the fight against gender-Based violence (GBV) has also been placed on sharp focus.

“We have strengthened the capabilities of the criminal justice system and improved support for survivors of [GBV]. However, our primary focus must remain on the prevention of [GBV] against young girls and the women of our country.

“Working with civil society…we continue to call upon men and boys to stand at the forefront of changing attitudes and behaviour towards the girls and the women of our country,” he said.
Moving forward

The President acknowledged that South Africa still faces challenges that must be overcome.

“As much as we have made progress, we have to do much more to overcome the challenges that confront our nation. We need to work urgency and purpose to grow our economy and create jobs,” he said.

President Ramaphosa described the year ahead as one that should be looked at with “great hope” by all South Africans.

“As a people, our unity, determination and resilience has seen us through hard and difficult times. Just as this has been a year of great change, we look to the next year with great hope. We will be embarking on a National Dialogue, bringing all South Africans together to develop a common vision for the country.

“In 2025, we will be hosting the very first G20 Summit on African soil. Through our leadership of the G20, we will work for solidarity, equality and sustainable development. That will have an impact on many peoples around the world in various countries.
“May God continue to bless South Africa and protect her people,” President Ramaphosa concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will today lead an emergency ministerial meeting in the Eastern Cape, amid a high number of initiates who have died in the province.

The Minister’s emergency visit follows 20 initiates losing their lives at various initiation schools.

“These deaths sent shockwaves across the country as confirmation of the unfortunate passing of initiates was publicised.

“We must not lose sight of the fact that these late initiates are human beings with loved ones. They also have the right to life like all of us. To this effect, it cannot be business as usual,” a statement read.

The department said it was committed to ensuring that this longstanding cultural practice was performed safely, restoring its dignity.

Ulwaluko or traditional male circumcision is an age-old rite of passage that marks the transition from boyhood to manhood in Xhosa culture.

The ritual is performed to instil social and moral values and to produce men who are responsible, hardworking and honest.

“We know that this has been practised for generations without the challenges we have seen recently.

“The visit of the Minister also confirms that culture does not kill, but it is those who are not following the norms and standards as contained within the Initiation Act who drag down the reputation of this cultural tradition.”

The Minister will visit the Amathole District Municipality which has experienced one of the highest number of initiation-related deaths.

During the visit, Hlabisa will meet the provincial and local government officials, the district initiation forum, provincial initiation committees and the broader communities.

The department acknowledged that the passing of the young men had left their families devastated.

“Therefore, this mass devastation caused by the passing of 20 initiates impacts and affects the whole nation and is tantamount to a disaster.

“We have lost lives. Therefore, we cannot go on as if it is business as usual. Something drastic must happen to protect our youth who undertake this important cultural and traditional journey.”

Additionally, the Minister has appealed for collective efforts to safeguard this ancient cultural practice from abuse, exploitation and possible extinction. – SAnews.gov.za

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

By: Bongani Lukhele

In 1993 Andrew Lebitsa, a Free State Black Industrialist, participated in an empowerment and capacity building project that he said was initiated by South Africa’s first Black President, Nelson Mandela, and New York’s first Black Mayor, David Dinkins.

The objective of the programme was to develop a pool of black corporate bank managers to equip them with skills, knowledge and information that would empower them to play a critical role in the transformation of the banking industry after the country had transitioned to democracy.

Lebitsa spent six months at the Chase Merchant Bank and Baruch College in New York honing his corporate management skills in the bank and acquiring knowledge through the college’s Executive Management Development Programme.

At the time, little did Lebitsa know that he was bound to follow in the footsteps of the two visionary leaders and blaze his own trail, as he attests that his No.1 Hair company is the only black-owned hair braids manufacturing company in the country.

This was made possible by the support he received from the Black Industrialists Programme of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

In line with the vision of Mandela and Dinkins, the objective of the scheme is to produce a pool of capable and successful Black Industrialists who will actively and meaningfully participate in the manufacturing industry and contribute to growing the economy, creating jobs and transform the sector in particular, and the country’s economy in general.

Today, No.1 Hair, which operates from the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Harrismith, is providing employment to 60 people who are producing the synthetic hair braids, or hair extensions as they are commonly known, for both domestic and Southern African markets.

“After a long spell in the petroleum franchise and retail industries, I got into a hardware products import and distribution industry. Many of my retail clients requested me to import hair as well.  This was initially never in my mind. But after conducting a research I realised that it was a R9-billion industry in South Africa that these people were indirectly encouraging me to participate it. I decided to get into it,” recalls Lebitsa.

After bouncing off the idea with the late prominent businessperson, Don Mkhwanazi, he advised Lebitsa to consider setting up a plant and manufacture hair in South Africa, instead of importing it.

He connected him with two South Korean businessmen who assisted him to set up the factory in the Maluti-a-Phofung SEZ. The location was an obvious choice for Lebitsa as he once worked in the zone while he was employed by the Free State Development Corporation as a property manager.

“That is how No.1 Hair was born,"he said.

R60 million state-of-the-art plant

The R60 million state-of-the-art plant was set up with assistance from the dtic and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

“After a delay caused by the COVID-19 [pandemic], we eventually started the production of our brand of hair braids in January 2021. We started with black hair braids and extended our range to numerous other colours over a period of time,” said Lebitsa.

He concedes that penetrating the hair market as a black manufacturer has been and remains a steep challenge.

“Firstly, consumers of this product are used to particular famous brands that are all imported. It is not easy for them to warm up to and embrace a new, unknown product. Secondly, but more importantly; it is the problem of perception and stereotypes that one has to deal with in the industry.

“As a black manufacturer, you are already disadvantaged when approaching buyers who source products for big companies and retail stores.

Summer season

“From not even giving you a chance to present your products to them, to doubting both your capability as a businessperson to deliver on orders, and the quality of your products. It is a big challenge. However, one order at a time we have managed to build quite [a] sizeable number of clients,” he adds.

Lebitsa’s spirit lifts when he starts speaking about the summer season that he says sparks a high demand in hair braids. To this end, he has received huge amounts of orders that will soon see all of his production lines running at full capacity.

“Despite all these market penetration challenges, we are making steady progress and continue to grow the company.  Slowly but surely, we are increasing our own market share.

“We pride ourselves in being a proudly South African company whose products and raw material are produced in the country.

“We are hopeful that the Buy Local Campaign will instil patriotism in consumers of our products and enable them to choose locally-produced quality products instead of poor quality imports.”

He revealed that his plan is to expand his business by diversifying his product range and venturing into the manufacturing of hair care products. - SAnews.gov.za
