Minister leads G20 environment working group

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, will this week lead the Group of Twenty (G20) Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) as part of South Africa’s Presidency of the G20.

“It is expected that the outcome of this first virtual G20 ECSWG meeting will provide strategic direction and a common understanding amongst G20 Member States on the key environmental and climate change priorities and deliverables,” the Minister said on Sunday.

Taking place under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability,” the Minister is expected to open the meeting on Tuesday, by setting the scene for South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 ECSWG, provide an opportunity to discuss the five priorities and deliverables, and also present the proposed work plan for the G20 ECSWG for 2025.

The priority focus areas for South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 ECSWG include:

  • Biodiversity and Conservation – Implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Biodiversity Economy;
  • Land Degradation, Desertification and Drought – Land Degradation Neutrality targets;
  • Chemicals and Waste Management – Sustainable Chemicals Management; Circular Economy; Waste Management; Waste to Energy; Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation;
  • Climate Change and Air Quality – Just Transition; Loss and Damage; Adaptation, including Climate Resilient Development (CRD); Climate Finance and Air Quality; and
  • Oceans and Coastal Management – Marine Spatial Planning – ocean governance; combatting marine plastic pollution.

The G20 ECSWG aims to enhance cooperation amongst all G20 members and invitees to address environmental and climate change priorities.

The G20 comprises 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and United States, as well as two regional bodies, namely the European Union and the African Union.

The G20 members represent about two-thirds of the world population, approximately 85% of the global GDP and over 75% of the global trade.

This platform is considered as the leading forum for international economic cooperation and plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.

South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 commenced on 01 December 2024 and will continue until 30 November 2025.

The Presidency will build upon on the achievements of India (2023 Presidency) and Brazil (2024 Presidency), to ensure continuity in advancing the developmental agenda within the G20.

“South Africa’s G20 Presidency provides a unique opportunity for the country to champion the aspirations of emerging market economies and lead the developmental agenda of the African Continent within the framework of the G20."

A total of three G20 ECSWG meetings and one ECSWG Ministerial meeting will be held in South Africa, with the first virtual meeting scheduled to take place from 25 – 28 March 2025; followed by the second meeting from 14-18 July 2025 at Kruger National Park, and the final meeting in October 2025 at Cape Town.

The Ministerial meeting will be held back-to-back with the third ECSWG meeting in October 2025.

The department will also roll out outreach and awareness activities in the buildup to the three G20 ECSWG meetings throughout the country to amplify the messaging on the focus areas for the G20 ECSWG.

“The department will leverage South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 to market and showcase the Kruger-Kirstenbosch-iSimangaliso Icon Status Strategy (KISS). Some of the meetings and activities will take place at these iconic world-class sites to showcase them on the global stage,” the Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

SA to partake in Petersberg Climate Dialogue

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dr Dion George, will this week represent South Africa at the 15th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD), where the country will reinforce its commitment to climate action.

“The dialogue will provide a strategic opportunity for South Africa to reinforce its commitment to climate action, advocate for equitable solutions that address the unique challenges faced by developing nations, and foster stronger international cooperation,” the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment said on Monday.

Taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the annual high-level conference, co-hosted by Germany and Brazil in Berlin, Germany, serves as a crucial bridge between successive United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COPs), providing a platform for international dialogue on climate action and cooperation.

“Established in 2010 by former German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel, the dialogue convenes selected nations to pave the way for successful negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“The ministerial meeting provides an informal yet strategic space for countries to deliberate on key issues under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, including the Global Goal on Adaptation, mitigation ambition, loss and damage from climate impacts, and the provision of international climate finance,” the department said.

The Minister will use this platform as an opportunity to provide an overview of South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group.

“I look forward to sharing highlights about our five interrelated key priorities, including climate change and air quality, biodiversity and conservation, and land degradation, desertification and drought,” said George. - SAnews.gov.za

The Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) jointly hosted the “UNIDO-Japan partnership for Africa” event at the Vienna International Centre this week. Held in the framework of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), it showcased achievements through a week-long panel exhibition and a series of thematic discussions.

An opening ceremony on 17 March 2025 in the Rotunda featured remarks by UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller (via video message) and the co-host, Ambassador Atsushi Kaifu of Japan. Ambassador Maimounata Ouattara of Burkina Faso, Chairperson of the African Group in Vienna and UNIDO Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director Yuko Yasunaga also provided opening remarks. A musical performance by the My Heart String Quartet Hiroshima accompanied the ceremony.

In his video statement, Director General Müller underscored the strength of the partnership between UNIDO and Japan, noting, “UNIDO and Japan together address poverty and hunger, advance climate action and foster a circular economy. We create jobs and livelihoods around the world, offering perspectives for the future”. Ambassador Kaifu of Japan underscored the significance of the year 2025, as the TICAD 9 Summit will be held this August in Yokohama, Japan. He expressed the hope that “this week's event provides an opportunity to explore innovative solutions for Africa and serves as a significant milestone in advancing the TICAD process”.

Ambassador Ouattara reaffirmed the importance of the UNIDO-Japan partnership with Africa stating that it “played a transformative role in promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization across our continent”. She further highlighted that “this partnership has contributed to economic growth, job creation and the adoption of sustainable practices that empower Africa industries and communities”. Deputy to the Director General Yuko Yasunaga highlighted UNIDO's ongoing commitment to supporting Africa's industrial development and acknowledged Japan's significant financial contributions.

The opening ceremony included the presentation of newly funded projects in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, and a regional project (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia). Following the opening ceremony, a reception provided attendees with networking opportunities, while discussions continued in informative sessions.

The first session was a presentation on the activities of the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) Tokyo in Africa, by Fumio Adachi, Head of ITPO Tokyo. The session informed about seminars and events, the delegate programme and African business advisors programme of the ITPO in Tokyo, as well as its Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP) and Global South programme.

Another session focused on plastic circular economy initiatives and challenges in Japan and Africa. African Region Records Further Decline in TB Deaths, Cases

Location: News

WHO Regional Office for Africa
Download logo

The African region has recorded the steepest decline globally in tuberculosis (TB) deaths since 2015, despite falling short of key milestones to significantly lower the burden of the disease and end its toll on health and lives.

Deaths from TB fell by 42% between 2015 and 2023 while cases declined by 24% over the same period, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Report 2024.

The reductions were mainly due to increased efforts by countries to reinforce case detection and provision of treatment, thus averting deaths. About 1.9 million cases were detected in 2023 compared with 1.4 million in 2020. Over the same period, treatment coverage rose from 55% to 74% across the region.

This year, World TB Day is being marked under the theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver”, which calls for urgent action to turn commitments into tangible impact. It emphasizes the need for strong investment and decisive measures to scale up WHO-recommended interventions for early detection, diagnosis, preventive treatment and high-quality TB care.

The WHO End TB Strategy calls for countries to reduce TB deaths and cases by 75% and 50% respectively by 2025, compared with 2015 levels.

Several African countries have made notable progress. South Africa achieved a 50% reduction in TB incidence between 2015 and 2023, becoming the first country in the region to surpass the 2025 milestone ahead of schedule.

Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo and Zambia have also already met the 2025 goal of a 75% reduction in TB deaths. Other countries, including Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Uganda are close behind, with mortality reductions of 66% or more.

At a subregional level, Eastern and Southern Africa has been the main driver of TB reduction, cutting incidence from 466 to 266 per 100 000 between 2000 and 2023. Progress has been slower in Central and West Africa, where TB incidence and mortality remain a concern.

Despite the progress, several challenges still need to be overcome. Limited access to rapid diagnostics, which currently reach only 54% of TB patients, is one of the most pressing issues. While this marks a significant improvement from just 24% in 2015 – nearly doubling coverage in 10 years – access is insufficient to curb the spread of multidrug-resistant TB strains.

The burden of MDR-TB persists, with more than half of these cases undiagnosed and untreated in 2023.

TB also imposes a severe economic burden. For nearly 68% of TB-affected households in Africa, the cost of seeking treatment is catastrophic. Many families face high out-of-pocket medical expenses, loss of income and inadequate social protection, hindering adherence and full recovery.

Low funding continues to impede TB control efforts at national and regional levels. The African region requires US$ 4.5 billion annually for comprehensive TB services, yet only US$ 0.9 billion is currently available, leaving a US$ 3.6-billion gap. Without urgent investment, life-saving interventions will remain out of reach for many.

WHO continues to support countries to reinforce TB control and contribute to global efforts against the disease. This includes working with countries to adopt rapid diagnosis and updated treatment guides, in line with the UN High-Level Meeting Political Declaration on TB 2023.

To meet the global targets, urgent action is required to close the diagnostic gap, increase funding, and expand access to treatment and prevention.

Ambrosia Enters Malian Market

In February 2025, investment fund Ambrosia Investment Holding acquired a 50% stake in Canadian firm Allied Gold's mining projects in Ethiopia and Mali. As part of the deal, Ambrosia will inject $375 million in working capital to accelerate project development, boosting Ethiopia and Mali's gold output by 290,000 ounces per annum by mid-2026 and 400,000 ounces per annum by 2028, respectively. Additionally, Ambrosia plans to deploy solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems to ensure energy security at the Sadiola mine in Mali by July 2026 as part of the acquisition agreement.

AD Ports Kickstarts Luanda Operations

Logistics firm AD Ports Group started operations at the Luanda Port in January 2025 as part of a $250 million investment plan. With the Luanda Port handling 76% of Angola's cargo volumes and serving as a crucial trade corridor between international markets and Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, AD Ports' investment will bolster the region's mining sector. AD Ports will operate the terminal over the next 20 years. The company could increase investments at the facility to $380 million to meet the growing demand for logistics as Angola's container volumes are anticipated to increase by 3.3% annually over the next decade.

IHC Bolsters Production at Mopani Mine

International Holding Company boosted ore production at the Mopani Mine in Zambia from 2.2 million tons to 2.8 million tons in January 2025 through its $1.1 billion investment made in March 2024. The mine has also improved copper grade from 1.68% to 2.21% and expanded employment from 10,765 to 12,684 workers.

Emiral Expedites Ghana, Mauritania Projects

Emiral Mining is fast-tracking its iron ore project in Mauritania, with a pre-feasibility study report set for release in Q1, 2025. The company has invested $40 million in exploration since February 2020. Additionally, Emiral Mining is strengthening Ghana's gold industry through its majority stake in Asante Gold Corporation, the operator of Ghana's major gold mines such as Bibiani and Chirano. Asante Gold Corporation is undertaking a $522 million expansion program for the Bibiani and Chirano Mines.

Looking Ahead

A number of UAE public and private sector entities are seeking partnership and investment opportunities across various African markets. International Resources Holding signed an agreement with South Africa's Public Investment Corporation in late 2024 to invest in mining, green energy and logistics projects. Similarly, DP World announced a five-year $3 billion investment plan in mid-2024 to enhance Africa's logistics infrastructure and facilitate mineral exports to international markets. In Kenya, the UAE Ministry of Investment and Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund ADQ signed agreements in 2024 to invest in the country's mining sector as part of broader efforts to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The upcoming African Mining Week – taking place October 1-3 in Cape Town - presents an ideal platform for UAE and African stakeholders to strengthen industry cooperation. As the premier event for the African mining industry, African Mining Week fosters collaboration and dealmaking, striving to advance projects and consolidate the continent's position as a global mineral producer. The event takes place under the theme From Extraction to Beneficiation: Unlocking Africa's Mineral Wealth.

African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town. Human Rights Festival celebrates liberation heroes

Constitution Hill will this weekend host one of Gauteng’s key events – the 2025 Human Rights Festival from 20 to 23 March 2025.

“Celebrating it’s 7th year, the event invites the public to commemorate South Africa’s Human Rights Day and celebrate the memory of those liberation heroes who took a stand for human rights in the Sharpeville 1960 massacre.

“The festival aims to build greater awareness and knowledge around human rights and to promote the importance of an active citizenry,” said Constitution Hill in a statement.

This as South Africa marks Human Rights Day on 21 March 2025. Deputy President Paul Mashatile will on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, deliver the keynote address at the commemoration event scheduled to take place at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium, in Kariega.

The 2025 Human Rights Festival serves as both a global inspiration and a display of the strength of South Africa’s ubuntu culture in working towards a just and inclusive society.

Civil society organisations have worked with Constitution Hill to shape a unique programme for the event.

Hosted on the apron of the Constitutional Court and using venues in the Old Fort and Women’s Jail, the festival will bring together a public audience; community-based organisations; social movements; government and non-governmental organisations, and international organisations.

The four-day event is free to all and gates open at 10h00 on all three days.

On Thursday, Gauteng MEC for Economic Development Lebogang Maile will deliver a powerful public lecture at Constitution Hill’s Women’s Jail Museum to honour the life and legacy of Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The opening of Qhakaza: Pain Undefined Curated by Gift Kgosierileng, explores how Mama Winnie Mandela used fashion as a form of resistance and empowerment.

“Through carefully selected pieces, photographs, and multimedia installations, the exhibition highlights how her iconic style became a tool for reclaiming agency and asserting dignity in the face of systemic oppression,” said the statement.

There will also be non-governmental organisation (NGO) capacity building sessions; learners programs and public dialogue sessions. The day will end with an NGO and film makers networking session.

On Friday, the official opening ceremony will include the 1000 Drums for Solidarity. Drumming serves as a powerful tool to amplify marginalised voices and foster solidarity within community groups.

There will be multiple interactive sessions including workshops and dialogues; family fun at the children’s village; a local authors book fair and book readings; film festival showcasing local and global talent; live poetry segments and a curated maker’s market.

A live show will take place from 17h00 – 21h00, headlined by renowned jazz artist Mandisi Dyantyis.

On Sunday, Constitution Hill invites the public to the last day of the event to take a stand and join together for Human Rights in the 8km WeThePeopleWalk Walk through the city with a fun filled program kicking off from 7am.

The walk will return back to the site for various activities and a local makers market.

The festival takes place at Constitution Hill, formerly a site of prisons, where many great liberation leaders were incarcerated.

Today Constitution Hill has been transformed into a beacon of light for democracy and social justice. A living museum that executes multiple education, creative development, human rights and constitutional public programs throughout the year.

The Africa Debate Returns to London

Location: News
Invest Africa

Now in its 11th year, The Africa Debate 2025 returns as London's leading Africa-focused investment forum, bringing together global policymakers, industry leaders, and investors at the prestigious Guildhall on 2 July 2025.

At a time when Africa's economic transformation is at a critical inflection point, this year's debate will focus on “Harnessing Natural Capital for Growth.” With 60% of the world's richest solar resources and a wealth of critical minerals crucial to next-generation industries, Africa is positioned at the centre of the global energy transition. However, realising this opportunity requires more than just resource extraction. The focus must shift towards bold policy reforms, investment in value chains, and partnerships that promote industrial growth, ensuring Africa is not just a supplier of raw materials but a leader in global markets.

“Africa is no longer defined by its raw materials - it is emerging as a global force in advanced industries, sustainable energy, and digital innovation,” said Chantelé Carrington, CEO at Invest Africa. “The challenge now is not just unlocking potential, but turning ambition into action. This year's debate will bring together visionary leaders and investors to shape the strategies that will drive Africa's next phase of economic transformation.”

Key Themes Driving The Africa Debate

This year's discussions will focus on four central themes shaping Africa's investment landscape:

  • Africa's Role in Global Supply Chains: With demand for green energy and digital infrastructure surging, Africa has a unique opportunity to move up the value chain and position itself as a leader in advanced manufacturing and sustainable industrialisation. At The Africa Debate, we will explore the policies, investments, and trade agreements needed to ensure that Africa captures greater economic value from its natural capital rather than exporting it in its raw form.
  • Mobilising Capital for Natural Resources: Unlocking Africa's vast resources requires smart, structured finance. Traditional funding models have fallen short in mobilising the capital needed for infrastructure, energy, and industrialisation. At The Africa Debate, we will examine how blended finance, innovative investment vehicles, and risk-mitigation tools can de-risk projects and bridge Africa's financing gap.
  • Digitalising Natural Capital: Africa loses an estimated $88.6 billion annually to illicit financial flows, opaque commodity trading and resource mispricing. Could blockchain technology provide the transparency and security needed to capture fair value from resources? Support From the United Kingdom Enables Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to Scale up Pest Monitoring and Improve Food Security in Africa

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has welcomed a contribution of nearly USD 1.2 million (£ 950 000) from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which will support the implementation of the Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP).

APP is an initiative of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and is designed to strengthen the technical capacity of personnel in national plant protection organizations - government agencies responsible for phytosanitary work. The programme equips them to use scientific approaches and advanced digital technologies to improve monitoring, detection, response and recovery from pest outbreaks.

Annually, pests cause between 30 to 60 percent of crop losses in Africa, resulting in an economic cost of about USD 65.58 billion. These losses leave millions of people at risk of food insecurity, impact small-scale and commercial farmers' livelihoods and hinder regional and international trade of agricultural commodities.

“This contribution to the APP will strengthen Africa's phytosanitary capacity, enhancing our collective efforts to combat plant pests. Robust plant health systems are essential for safeguarding food security, enhancing biosecurity, facilitating trade, and protecting livelihoods across the continent,” said Beth Bechdol, FAO Deputy Director-General and interim IPPC Secretary.

The APP implementation targets all 54 African countries, with phase one underway in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Phase two will be launched in 2025 with eight countries: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Malawi, South Africa and Tunisia.

A partnership for sustainable and resilient agriculture

Since becoming a Member of FAO in 1945, the United Kingdom has helped to promote sustainable agriculture and global food security by supporting the Organization's strategic work in areas such as agricultural statistics, nutrition and food security analysis, development cooperation, resilience and peacebuilding, and climate change. The most recent contribution from the UK's International Biological Security Programme will bolster a key area of FAO's work, helping to prevent, detect and manage plant pests that have the potential to move quickly and easily across borders and cause significant economic and environmental damage.

“We applaud the support of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to strengthen phytosanitary systems across Africa,” said Alexander Jones, Director of FAO's Resource Mobilization Division. “As global travel and trade increase, improving the technical capacities of national plant protection organizations so that they are able to identify and respond to threats as they emerge is an investment whose impacts will be felt at a global level.”

The United Kingdom has been a strong advocate for plant health throughout the years, lending support to various IPPC initiatives such as the International Year of Plant Health, the first International Plant Health Conference, the IPPC ePhyto Solution, and assessment and management of climate change impacts on plant health. The United Kingdom is also closely engaged in the development and implementation of the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs), which provide the basis for countries to make national legislation, guidelines, and measures to protect their plant resources from pests.

Motsoaledi urges all to help fight against ’silent killer’ TB

Motsoaledi urges all to help fight against ’silent killer’ TB

Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, says Tuberculosis (TB) has resulted in more deaths than all other infectious diseases combined but receives less attention.

In 2023 alone, TB claimed over 56 000 deaths in South Africa, despite being a preventable and treatable disease.

The Minister emphasised the urgent need to tackle this public health crisis and announced that the soon-to-be-launched End TB campaign aims to reduce TB-related deaths by 41% by 2035.

“TB is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases, yet it continues to be a silent killer,” said Motsoaledi on Wednesday.

“TB doesn’t make noise. And that’s the problem that we’re faced with. That’s why I’m saying we are faced with a very difficult job.”

The Minister called on everyone to act now to end this epidemic and save lives.

The Minister’s remarks come as Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), Deputy President Paul Mashatile, will deliver the keynote address at the national World TB Day commemorative event on Monday, 24 March 2025.

World TB Day is commemorated annually on the 24th of March to raise public awareness about the global epidemic of TB and highlight efforts to eliminate the disease.

During the event on Monday, the Deputy President will also launch the national End TB campaign in Gamalakhe Township, Ugu District, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the Minister, the End TB initiative aims to test five million people for the disease, leveraging the success of HIV treatment strategies to control disease and prevent drug resistance.

“When we say you want to test five million people, if one family member tested positive, we want to test the whole family. That’s what we are going to do.”

He noted that this infectious disease has killed more people than all other infectious including Ebola, malaria, yellow fever, smallpox, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, influenza, and mpox.

In addition, Motsoaledi emphasised several key elements of the campaign, including the need for those who test positive to receive immediate treatment to prevent further transmission.

The Minister acknowledged the strong link between TB and HIV/AIDS and announced that the campaign will integrate the management of these two diseases, noting that TB kills 80% of people with HIV.

He highlighted the success of SANAC in bringing HIV/AIDS under control, observing the reduction in funerals over the past 15 years.

He suggested changing the name of SANAC to the South African National AIDS and TB Council to reflect the co-infection.

Meanwhile, he said the End TB campaign was a critical step in South Africa’s efforts to address the longstanding TB epidemic and improve the health and well-being of its citizens.

He also touched on the promising new M72/AS01E TB vaccine, funded by the Gates Foundation and Wellcome, with the trial being conducted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute (Gates MRI), with preliminary results expected in 2027.

The Minister called on the media to be an ally in shaping public perceptions, creating awareness, and influencing action around the TB campaign.

He was of the view that by amplifying the message, the media can play a crucial role in mobilising communities to participate in the fight against TB.

“We cannot succeed in this battle without the support and engagement of the media.

“Together, we can raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and empower people to take action against this preventable disease,” he stressed. – SAnews.go.za

Developing oil and gas resources can boost economy

Location: News

Developing oil and gas resources can boost economy

Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says developing the country’s gas and oil potential could be a game changer for economic growth.

“The South African government wants accelerated oil exploration in the country’s waters, we believe developing the country’s oil and gas resources could boost the country’s economic growth rate to 5% and possibly 8%.

“Government took a decision to rationalise some of our State-owned Entities [SOEs] to form the South African National Petroleum Company [SANPC]. The SANPC is a strategic intervention by government to create a State-owned national company to actively pursue oil and gas projects,” the Minister said in his speaking notes at the 4th Annual Southern Africa Oil and Gas (SAOG) Conference in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Exploration has found that South Africa’s coastal and adjoining waters hold approximately nine billion barrels of oil and a further 11 billion barrels oil equivalent of natural gas, although there remains uncertainty about the extent.

Mantashe noted that considering increasing demand for natural gas, “government has moved with speed to finalise the Gas Master Plan to achieve a stable and growing economy”.

“The Gas Master Plan is designed to complement existing energy policies and contribute to an integrated energy planning approach for the country as outlined in the updated Integrated Resources Plan. It provides a framework for the role of natural gas in the energy mix and gives policy direction to industry.

“Its objective is to ensure that government is able to diversify supply options from local and international markets. Furthermore, to facilitate the development an efficient, competitive and responsive energy infrastructure network, such as gas storage facilities, liquefied natural gas import facilities, pipeline networks and regasification plants.

“Through this, the Plan would also enhance localisation, create jobs and enable inclusive economic growth,” Mantashe said.

He noted that the European bloc of nations is looking to Africa to “diversify its gas supplies”.

“While this presents an opportunity to earn foreign revenue, we should ensure that we do not export our gas at the expense of domestic and regional markets. It is imperative for SADC [Southern African Development Community] countries to be resolute in their efforts to unlock oil and gas exploration and development.

“This further presents SADC countries with an opportunity to determine conditions that will alleviate global oil and gas prices by developing their own resources.

“There must be a concerted effort among African nations to ensure that the oil and gas sector grows and thrives through investments in the upstream development for the economic prosperity of our nations,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

A Competition to Drive Eswatini’s Artisans to Success

Location: News

International Trade Centre

The European Union (EU) and International Trade Centre (ITC) launched a unique competition to empower Eswatini's artisans by providing game-changing support to small businesses. This collaboration, with a Toyota 2.8 GD6 vehicle as the grand prize, aimed at driving innovation, market expansion, and new opportunities.

When Bafanabethu ‘Bethu' Gina, Managing Director of Favourite Designs, entered the competition, he saw it as more than just an opportunity to win a vehicle worth close to €18,000 – it was a chance to accelerate his company's expansion.

Favourite Designs, a fast-growing furniture and décor manufacturing enterprise in Eswatini, has been paving its way in the artisan industry. He uses traditional techniques like grass weaving to create baskets, lamp shades and other homewares with a modern sensibility.

‘This vehicle is more than just a mode of transport – it's a game-changer for our business,' says Bethu. ‘It will allow us to reach new customers, access rural suppliers more efficiently, and expand into the South African market. Our goal is to triple our market size by leveraging this opportunity to grow beyond Eswatini.'

Preserving culture with innovation

Founded in Matsapha, Eswatini, Favourite Designs combines modern design principles with traditional Swati craftsmanship. The company works closely with rural artisans, particularly women, sourcing raw materials and helping to preserve Swati cultural identity through handcrafted pieces. Bethu sees his role not only as a designer and entrepreneur but as someone who inspires fellow artisans to integrate design thinking into their craft, making their products more competitive in the global market.

‘I love how Emaswati artisans have preserved our culture through beautiful, handcrafted work, passing down traditions from generation to generation,' he says. ‘I see Eswatini's artisan and design industry growing substantially in the next five years. But we need to inspire artisans – both aspiring and practicing – to intentionally apply design principles from conceptualization to realization. This will enhance product quality and make Eswatini crafts globally competitive while preserving our cultural heritage.'

Plans to scale are in motion

Favourite Designs is a key participant in the EU, ITC, and House on Fire Artisanal Incubator Programme, which nurtures emerging businesses in the handcraft and artisanal food sectors. Through this initiative, Bethu's company has:

  • Showcased work at major events like the MTN Bushfire Festival and Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival
  • Collaborated with international designers, including Finnish designer Mari Koppanen
  • Featured at prestigious international exhibitions, such as the Paris Design Show in 2024

The new Toyota 2.8 GD6 vehicle will expand these opportunities. It will help Favourite Designs connect with international buyers, attend trade shows, and access key regional markets like South Africa. He'd already been saving for a vehicle so that he can meet with his rural suppliers and make deliveries to customers. Now he can use those savings to invest in other parts of his business.

The EU seeks to foster space for enterprise creativity

The EU and ITC structured this competition not just as a giveaway but as an opportunity to reward resilience and innovation.

‘Rather than a simple donation, we designed a competition to reward an entrepreneur who has demonstrated resilience and innovation,' said EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg. ‘Favourite Designs has shown exceptional growth potential, and we are confident this vehicle will be instrumental in their success.'

Bethu's winning competition entry video creatively told the company's story while addressing the competition's objectives. He structured the submission like a design brief, integrating a script, storytelling elements, and real footage from his journey with ITC since 2023.

‘I wanted to demonstrate the progress we've made as a result of ITC's intervention and how the vehicle would boost our operations and growth,' he explains. ‘The first minute of the video is a skit showcasing how we would use the vehicle, followed by three minutes of our ITC-supported journey, and a final call-to-action statement. I shot and edited everything using just my mobile phone.'

Favourite Designs is a shining example of how local businesses can scale internationally with the right support, vision, and innovation.

With a new vehicle and growing recognition, Favourite Designs is well on its way to becoming an international success story.

Government welcomes agreement on protecting penguin populations

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has welcomed the finalisation of a historic settlement agreement -- in the form of a court order -- securing critical protections for South Africa’s penguin populations.

The landmark agreement -- reached between the fishing industry and conservation organisations BirdLife South Africa and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) -- establishes island closures to safeguard the critically endangered African Penguin, while supporting sustainable fishing practices.

“Today marks a triumph for conservation and sustainable development. This court-ordered settlement realises the DFFE’s long-standing commitment to protecting our penguins and biodiversity, while ensuring the fishing industry’s viability.

“I am immensely proud of the collaborative spirit that has brought us here, a model for how industry and conservation can work hand in hand for the greater good,” Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, said on Tuesday.

The order, issued by the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday, includes the following island closures:

  • Dassen Island: Interim closure as per current permit conditions.
  • Robben Island: A 20km closure, consistent with the Island Closure Experiment.
  • Stony Point: Closure as depicted by the black hatched line in the agreed diagram, applicable to all fishing vessels.
  • Dyer Island: Interim closure as reflected in current permit conditions.
  • St Croix Island: Closure delineated by coordinates (western boundary: 25°45'E; southern boundary: 34°01' to 25°50'E; southern boundary east: 33°59' to 25°59'E; eastern boundary to MPA: 25°59'E).
  • Bird Island: A 20km closure radius from the lighthouse, as implemented during the Island Closure Experiment.

The DFFE said it is committed to overseeing the effective implementation of these closures and will collaborate with stakeholders to monitor their impact on penguin populations.

“With this court order, South Africa sets a global standard for environmental stewardship, proving that unity and science-based solutions can secure a thriving future for both nature and livelihoods.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the fishing industry, BirdLife South Africa, SANCCOB, and all involved parties for their dedication to this process,” the department said. -SAnews.gov.za

South Africa strengthens ties with Japan

Location: News

South Africa strengthens ties with Japan

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Japan during a working visit  marking 115 years of relations between the two nations.

Speaking at United Nations University in Tokyo, the Deputy President underscored South Africa’s ongoing collaboration with Japan, highlighting the Strategic Cooperation Partnership established in 2010.

“This year, the two countries celebrate a significant milestone of 115 years of relations,” he said.

He also praised Japan’s significant investment in South Africa, with 273 firms currently operating in the country and sustaining over 200,000 local jobs.

“These ties have particularly flourished in the fields of trade and investment, science and technology, and education and skills development assistance. Japan is a significant investor in the South African economy, with 273 firms operating in the country, hence sustaining over 200 000 local employment opportunities for many South Africans,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Deputy President held fruitful engagements with the Prime Minister as well as with the Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan. He said these meetings were a sign of the significant people, and trade relations between the two sister countries.

Beyond economic ties, cultural exchanges were also in focus. The Deputy President visited the historic Meiji Jingu forest, where he reflected on the importance of nature in fostering societal development, linking it to the African philosophy of Ubuntu.

“This visit served as a reminder of how the forest and nature more cements the importance of connecting with nature what has been appreciated as Kami.

“We have a lot in common as a people, hence we will continue to invest in people-to-people cultural exchange programmes. This is already happening through the number of rugby players that are playing in various teams here in Japan. We are emphasising the importance of people to people because it becomes easier to do business when you know each others' cultures,” the Deputy President said.

Strengthening economic cooperation

The visit comes at a time when South Africa is looking to bolster international partnerships in light of current geopolitical challenges confronting the nation and the global community.

The Deputy President emphasised that his delegation’s trip was aimed at fortifying economic collaborations, particularly in inclusive economic development and trade balance.

“We want our two nations to collaborate with a particular emphasis on promoting inclusive economic development and ensuring a balance and increase in trade between the two nations.

“This has also been one of the priorities of South Africa’s 7th Administration, popularly known as the Government of National Unity (GNU). The formation of the Government of National Unity is a momentous development in South Africa’s democracy,” he said.

South Africa’s leadership in the G20 was also highlighted, with the Deputy President reiterating the country’s vision for its presidency under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”

“We want to make a meaningful contribution to the expressions of the continent through Vision 2063 towards the Africa we want. Such an Africa is one that is more integrated into the global community and acts as a key player in the economy and the socio-political landscape more broadly.

“We believe that in an interconnected world, the challenges faced by one country have an impact at a global level,” he said.

Call for global cooperation

The Deputy President concluded his address by emphasising the importance of global cooperation in addressing challenges such as climate change, rising nationalism, and economic instability.

“As I conclude, let me emphasise that our challenges can only be resolved through cooperation, collaboration, and partnership; no challenge and no triumph exist in isolation. Cooperation is our greatest strength and our most powerful weapon.

“Under the guiding principle of Ubuntu - the profound belief that ‘I am because you are’ – we are reminded of the interconnectedness of humanity. It is this principle of Ubuntu that underpins South Africa’s leadership and vision for our G20 Presidency, and our future,” the Deputy President said.

He further urged everyone to remember that true progress is achieved not through words alone but through meaningful action and collaboration.

“We should be deliberate in our conversation and find more meaningful ways to strengthen our relations, both in trade, and investment. Let us work hand in hand towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable world for all,” he said.

The Deputy President arrived in Japan on Sunday and will conclude his visit on Wednesday, 19 March.

Unlocking Opportunities for a Climate-Resilient Future

Location: News
African Development Bank Group (AfDB)

The African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) participated in the third edition of the Africa's Green Economy Summit (AGES) (https://apo-opa.co/4izmWCf) in Cape Town, South Africa, from 18 – 21 February, 2025.

The annual Summit, hosted by the African Union, brought together policy makers, stakeholders, private sector and experts who discussed Africa's green transition and the urgent need for increased investment in climate resilience. The conference was held under the theme, “Building a Climate Resilient Africa: Catalysing Investment and Innovation in the Green and Blue Economies”. Discussions over the four days cut across five key areas: climate finance, biodiversity and nature, green reforms, resilient cities and green industrialisation.

With its vast renewable energy potential, abundance of critical minerals essential for the global energy transition, and a growing commitment to climate-smart solutions, Africa is very well placed to lead the way toward sustainable global growth. As it navigates a path towards fully realizing these boundless possibilities, against the backdrop of mounting climate challenges, there is increasing focus on the urgency of resource mobilization.

Dr. Anthony Nyong, Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the African Development Bank and keynote speaker at the summit's opening ceremony, touched on this in his remarks. Affirming that “Africa has enormous opportunities to lead global efforts to transition to a green economy”, he added that, “To build a climate-resilient Africa, adaptation must be at the heart of our strategies. While global climate finance continues to prioritize mitigation efforts, adaptation remains significantly underfunded, receiving less than 10 percent of total climate finance flows.”

Calling for a tripling of Africa's climate finance flows and green investments, and for the right partnerships to underpin the financing, Nyong concluded that “Together, we can build an Africa that thrives in harmony with nature.”

A “platinum sponsor” for the summit, the Bank featured in a range of activities, discussions and roundtables, consistently demonstrating its leadership role in supporting Africa's countries transition to climate resilience and low carbon development, as articulated in the its Climate Change and Green Growth Framework 2021 – 2030.

Harsen Nyambe, Director of Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment at the African Union, emphasized the summit's role as “a vital link between global capital and sustainable projects on the continent.”

Barbara Buchner, Global Managing Director of Climate Policy Initiative, stressed the critical need for private sector engagement, highlighting that existing funding amounts to only about 23 percent of Africa's estimated climate finance needs, while only 18 percent of the continent's climate finance is from the private sector – a figure “much lower than in other regions.”

Maxwell Gomera, South Africa Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, highlighted another key issue: “We've sent people to the moon, yet we still haven't solved the challenge of clean cooking. This is a business problem.”

“For the African Development Bank, driving green growth in Africa comes with challenges but also significant opportunities. In this regard, AGES presents a unique platform to spotlight Africa as a land of green economic opportunities in a range of sectors such as renewable energy, critical minerals, climate-smart agriculture, green cities, low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure, among others,” said Al Hamndou Dorsouma, Manager of Climate and Green Growth at the African Development Bank.

On Tuesday, 18 February, the Bank Group hosted a Masterclass on Carbon Markets in Africa, explored how carbon markets are becoming more stable and attractive for growth, and offering new opportunities for market entry and project development.

By leveraging platforms like AGES, Africa can strengthen partnerships, unlock funding, and implement policies that drive a sustainable and resilient future. With targeted investments and bold commitments, the continent has the potential to lead the way in shaping a low-carbon, climate-smart economy that benefits both its people and the planet.

Deputy President stresses importance of coordinated approach to challenges

Deputy President stresses importance of coordinated approach to challenges

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has stressed the need for a coordinated approach to peacebuilding and economic resilience.

This as he highlighted that the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, in the Sahel, and in Gaza, continue to exert a heavy human toll while heightening global insecurity.

The Deputy President was speaking at the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday.

The UNU, in partnership with the Embassy of South Africa in Japan, is co-hosting a symposium exploring South Africa's G20 Presidency and steps to ensure solidarity, equality and sustainability for all.

Touching on the deepening conflict and instability across Africa and the world, the Deputy President said this requires coordinated preventive action including dedicated intervention on peace building that is programmatic in nature.

“We are encouraged by the partnership between the United Nations University and the University of South Africa (UNISA) in cooperation with other relevant partner organisations to co-design and co-deliver required capacity building programmes for African leaders and mediators for resolving conflicts and blazing a path towards achieving peace, security and prosperity, “the Deputy President explained.

He further emphasised the urgent need for comprehensive, African-centred peace-building research and training programmes that span throughout Africa to address the urgent demand for capacity for conflict management and resolution, as well as society reconstruction.

G20 Presidency

“In our G20 Presidency, South Africa will continue to advocate for diplomatic solutions. Inclusive dialogue is the foremost guarantor of sustainable peace.
“South Africa has shown a firm resolve in its foreign policy by promoting principles of justice, solidarity, equality, peace, and respect, underpinned by its commitment to human dignity and leaving no one behind,” he said.

This was the reason South Africa has placed solidarity, equality, sustainability at the centre of its G20 Presidency.

As part of South Africa’s G20 intention to place Africa’s development at the top of the agenda, Mashatile outlined four key priorities which are strengthening disaster resilience, ensuring debt sustainability for developing economies, mobilising finance for a just energy transition, and harnessing critical minerals for sustainable growth.

“Our hosting of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, and the Business 20 provided an opportunity for us to promote South Africa and Africa as a business and investment destination and for the country to take the lead on providing solutions to global economic challenges,” he said.

He emphasised the country’s commitment to driving economic reforms, increasing investor confidence, and enhancing structural efficiencies in energy, water, and transport sectors.

“We believe that addressing structural concerns is essential to maintaining investor confidence and ensuring long-term economic stability. It is only by accelerating structural reforms and harnessing the power of the private sector that the country can sustain economic momentum and attract further foreign investment.

“As the South African government, we are implementing extensive structural, policy, and regulatory reforms to enhance the economy's performance,” he said.

AI role in shaping Africa’s economic future

The Deputy President also emphasised the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in shaping Africa’s economic future, calling for greater collaboration between African institutions and international organisations.

Quoting Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, he noted the need for South Africa to embrace AI while also ensuring ethical considerations remain central to its deployment.

He urged institutions like UNU to partner with African universities to foster digital skills development and AI-driven innovation.

As the G20 Presidency has shifted to South Africa, the Deputy President said that AI has emerged as a key area of focus.

Through the G20 Presidency, he said the country aims to harness AI to advance the Sustainable Development Goals agenda and address global challenges.

“We encourage the United Nations University to work alongside Africa in the development of AI, which has the potential to considerably boost the continent's economies. You must cooperate with additional universities in South Africa and throughout Africa to help overcome digital barriers, promote equality, and support inclusive sustainable development,” he said.

Mashatile added that African governments are also recognising the importance of the digital economy, which is heavily influenced by artificial intelligence. He noted that the digital economy and AI are becoming more important drivers of economic and social value creation throughout the world.

“We are investing in digital infrastructure, skills development, and entrepreneurship to assist Africa's digital economy to expand,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • “I am proud of the journey we started together ten years ago; I can see its fruits. Kenyans can feel its benefits,” President Ruto
  • “What a great honour! What a rare privilege! What a historic recognition!” Adesina

Kenya's President H.E. William Samoei Ruto has conferred the country's highest honour, Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart CGH, on the President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina (www.AfDB.org).

Dr Adesina becomes the 20th recipient of the honour that was established in 1967 and first awarded to Kenya's founding father and former President, H.E. Jomo Kenyatta. Others include globally renowned leaders such as former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, South Africa's Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Uganda's Yoweri Museveni and Kenya's subsequent Presidents Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta and Dr Ruto.

During a colourful investiture ceremony at Nairobi's State House, President Ruto praised Dr Adesina's distinguished service, commitment, and passion for the economic development of Kenya and Africa.

President Ruto congratulated Adesina and told him, “You are amazing. You are a great leader. You deserve this honour and investiture.”

The two leaders share a warm relationship that dates back 20 years when Adesina lived and worked in Kenya for the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa, AGRA. At that time Ruto was Kenya's Minister for Agriculture. Both recalled how they worked together to provide subsidies to farmers despite opposition at the time from some donors and global financial institutions.

President Ruto said under his presidency he has continued with the same policy of offering subsidies to farmers, leading to an increase in the country's food production.

“Our maize production increased from 40 million to 70 million bags last year. Our sales from tea, generated more than 220 billion shillings [approximately $1.7 billion], the highest ever earnings.”

“I am proud of the journey we started together ten years ago; I can see its fruits. Kenyans can feel its benefits,” President Ruto told Adesina who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Grace Yemisi Adesina.

In its citation, the Kenya government recognized Adesina as a distinguished economist and a global development leader.

“He transformed the African Development Bank into a globally recognized institution for financial innovation and development impact and grown  the Bank's general capital from $93 billion to $318 billion,” the citation reads.

In his acceptance speech, Adesina said: “I am greatly humbled by your incredible kindness! What a great honour! What a rare privilege! What a historic recognition!”

Adesina spoke about Kenya's special place in the history of the Bank which was established in 1964. Since then, the Bank has financed a total of 167 projects, with financial commitment of $7.8 billion.

He said the Bank's current portfolio in Kenya consists of 45 projects worth $4.09 billion. They include, among others:

  • The Last-Mile Connectivity electricity project, which has helped to increase the number of Kenyans connected to the national electricity grid from 2.42 million households in 2014 to 9.7 million households in 2024.
  • The expansion of the Thika-Nairobi Highway, which has drastically reduced travel time from 2-3 hours to just 30-45 minutes between the two destinations.
  • The Bank is providing $634 million for the Kenya Town's Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation project. This includes 314.92 million Euros for the construction of the Thwake Multipurpose Water Dam, to be completed by July 2026. It will provide water to about 1.3 million people in Kitui and Makueni counties, as well as the Konza Techno-City in Machakos County.
  • The Bank's support for the private sector in Kenya includes over $700 million in lines of credit to more than eight commercial banks.

President Ruto said the Bank's support to the country's mortgage sector has boosted the government's national housing programme, with 150,000 houses under construction, generating jobs for 260, 000 youth.

Speaking about Kenya's high youth unemployment, Adesina pointed to several youth riots that shook the country last year.

In addition to providing $309 million for eight on-going projects targeting skills development, Adesina said the Bank is preparing for Board approval, financial support for the establishment of a Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank of Kenya.

“This will be a stand-alone financial institution, that will be 100 percent dedicated to providing technical assistance, debt and equity financing for youth businesses in Kenya.”

Adesina was accompanied by Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth Dr Kevin Kariuki, the Vice President for Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery Nnenna Nwabufo; the Director General for East Africa, Kennedy Mbekeani; the Executive Director for Eastern Africa, Jonathan Nzayikorera; and his Senior Advisor to the President for Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Dr Victor Oladokun, who delivered the opening prayer for the ceremony.

“This is an honour that I will cherish for life,” Adesina said. “It will be a constant reminder that the country I love so much, Kenya, loves me back, appreciates and celebrates my leadership at the African Development Bank, and values and honours the incredible contributions of the Bank to its development. I accept this honour with great humility.”

Opportunities presented by green economy must be a shared prosperity

Opportunities presented by green economy must be a shared prosperity

Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield says there is a need for global consensus to ensure that the new opportunities presented by the green economy result in shared prosperity.

He was leading a delegation of officials from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), in briefing a joint session of the Portfolio and Select Committees on the policy priorities of South Africa’s G20 Presidency and the dtic’s role in this regard.

Tuesday's session was held ahead of the first Trade and Working Group meeting which will be held virtually later in the day.

The working group is expected to hold further meetings later in the year before the main ministerial meeting in October.

Its primary focus will be on four priority areas, namely, trade and inclusive growth, a responsive trade agenda to address global commons, green industrialisation and the reform of the World Trade Organization.

The Deputy Minister told the Parliamentarians that the G20, as a forum of the largest economies in the world, bears a unique responsibility in ensuring a response to the environmental, social and economic challenges that continue to affect stability and hamper the pursuit of sustainable development.

“A particularly worrisome prospect is the lack of multilateral solutions and cooperative approaches and widening punitive approaches to addressing the issues of global commons and the rise in risks of fragmentation of international trade in the context of the transition to cleaner energy sources.

“We need to ensure that trade and climate/environmental policies should be mutually supportive and are consistent with World Trade Organisation principles contribute to the objectives of sustainable development.

“Mobilising support and resources to tackle the internal disparities driven by the uneven distributional effects of trade and globalisation is critical,” he said.

He said investments into developing countries must move away from “pit to port” activities that promote resource extraction.

“There is a need to promote beneficiation and local value addition of resources at source resulting in an additive rather than an extractive relationship.

“This necessitates finding a requisite balance that ensures that resource-rich countries benefit greatly from their endowments and that investments that contribute to structural transformation and industrial development while there is also a flow of resources to ensure the integrity of global and regional value chains.

“By strengthening and reforming multilateral mechanisms and institutions; by deepening International economic cooperation, we can indeed realise a better world free from the twin scourges of inequality and underdevelopment,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
