Celebrating the Trailblazers Shaping Africa’s Tech Future

Location: News
Africa Tech Festival

Africa Tech Festival (www.AfricaTechFestival.com) 2024 wrapped up last week, marking the most successful edition in the event's 27-year history. Organised by Informa Tech, the event is Africa's most extensive showcase of enterprise tech innovation, bringing together influential founders, business leaders, policymakers, investors, and startups.

Building on the momentum of the event's first two days, the final day kicked off with an opening address by Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, City of Cape Town. Commenting on the host city's standing as a leading tech hub hosting 51% of South Africa's startups, he emphasised Cape Town's focus on skills development in AI and tech in particular, reiterating his excitement at “making Cape Town a focal point for African innovation and setting an example of how tech can empower communities and social change.”

LeadersIn Africa Summit

Preceding the main event, the by-invitation LeadersIn Africa Summit was an exclusive VIP series of executive discussions designed to facilitate actionable dialogue between 100 of the continent's most influential tech players. Panel sessions, fireside chats, networking events, and roundtables provided a platform for sharing insights and collaborating on solutions to Africa's tech challenges. Topics ranged from emerging technologies to AI for startups, ESG, regulatory frameworks, fundraising strategies, and support for founders and investors.

Skills development and knowledge sharing

The final day of Africa Tech Festival 2024 also featured several keynote fireside discussions across the various event streams. Skills development was a theme of the day, including a masterclass session on AI content creation, a security fundamentals certification training session, and a technical workshop where participants worked in groups to develop scaling strategies for AI pilot projects.

Key Highlights

The USAID Young African Leaders Initiative(YALI) hosted the YALI Alumni Expo and Trade Show running alongside Africa Tech Festival. The YALI Expo  connected and celebrated YALI alumni making positive change in their communities by creating  these networking opportunities and showcasing innovations for sustainable impact.

One of the key topics focused on the gender gap and a panel discussion on day 4 centred around   Empowering Female Founders: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Venture Capital.  The challenge that female-founded companies face is that only 16% of tech funding and 8% of total funding go to these companies due to bias, lack of female representation among venture capital decision-makers or insufficient diversity in teams and investment criteria. It was proposed that female representation in venture capital leadership needed to be increased, more training and support was essential to encourage female founders to build networks and strengthen pitch preparation and business strategies.

The Africa Tech Festival Awards took place on the penultimate  night,  at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town. The awards celebrated the  exceptional technological advancements and expertise across the continent and highlighted the pioneering work that is transforming lives and industries across Africa, inspiring future innovation and growth. Some of the winners included:

  • Telco of the Year: MTN Ghana
  • Innovation for Impact: WIOCC Group
  • CXO of the Year: Patrick Benon, Orange Cameroon
  • Changing Lives Award: Orange Burkina Faso
  • Creative Visionary Award: Brighton Mhlongo
  • AIConics Award: GRIT - Gender Rights in Tech

“Africa Tech Festival 2024 exceeded our expectations in terms of engagement, active participation by key industry stakeholders, and the sheer scale of the event. As we wrap up the 2024 event, we'd like to express our gratitude to all our sponsors and supporters, with special mention to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and the City of Cape Town.

As the largest and most influential telecoms and technology event in Africa, with an audience that spans the entire ICT ecosystem, we're proud of the progress made in opening dialogue, sharing insights, and working together to advance Africa's digital transformation journey,” said Informa's James Williams, Event Director of Africa Tech Festival.

Municipalities urged to create conducive environment for manufacturing

Municipalities urged to create conducive environment for manufacturing

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Zuko Godlimpi, has underscored the crucial role of local government in strengthening South Africa’s manufacturing and export capabilities.

Addressing the 2nd Annual District Development Model (DDM) Conference at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha on Saturday, Godlimpi said municipalities are central to providing services, reducing bureaucratic obstacles, and creating opportunities for manufacturing enterprises -- whether located in central business districts, industrial parks or special economic zones.

"Manufacturing is not just an economic activity, it’s the engine that drives growth, supports resilience and creates stable, well-paying jobs.

“For our municipalities, this means fostering environments where manufacturing enterprises can flourish and in turn, drive local economies forward,” Godlimpi said.

Godlimpi emphasised that manufacturing is an essential foundation of economic stability due to its resilience to external factors such as global commodity prices and weather conditions.

“Unlike sectors that rely on finite resources or favourable weather, manufacturing can operate in diverse environments, provided there is solid municipal infrastructure."

Manufacturing is also a key driver of upstream and downstream industry growth. The Deputy Minister said that for each manufactured item, like an automobile, numerous supporting sectors such as plastics, textiles, and logistics are activated, stimulating local economies.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) initiatives aimed at empowering businesses through export-focused programmes, such as the Global Exporter Passport Programme (GEPP) and Export Awareness Seminars, have equipped over 285 businesses since April 2023 with export-readiness skills across various districts.

“Our objective is to make exporting accessible to enterprises nationwide, not just those in urban hubs. Programmes like GEPP ensure that businesses in rural areas are equally prepared to engage with global markets,” Godlimpi said.

He stressed the importance of reducing red tape at the municipal level.

"Municipalities that prioritise efficiency and active support for manufacturers are creating environments far more attractive to investors than those focused on merely offering financial incentives."

The Deputy Minister lauded the DDM as a unique opportunity to unlock economic potential and build inclusive, resilient economies across the country's districts.

"By working in partnership with municipalities and stakeholders, we are creating a vibrant export sector that not only enhances South Africa’s competitiveness globally but also generates local employment,” Godlimpi explained.

SA seeks balance between livelihoods and renewable energy ambitions

SA seeks balance between livelihoods and renewable energy ambitions

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the importance of considering the livelihoods and jobs of ordinary people, as the energy sector transitions towards renewable sources.

“As we can go towards renewable energy, there must be a just transition. There is a transition that we in South Africa have to go through and it must be the type of transition that advances the interests of ordinary people, as it grows the economy.

“The opportunities are enormous, and we just need to utilise the enablers to ensure it benefits everyone,” the President said on Sunday.

President Ramaphosa spoke in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly launched the ’Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg’ campaign.

The campaign was launched during a panel discussion with Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen.

The Global Citizen initiative, along with the 2024 G20 Presidency, supported by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together over 450 world leaders, innovators, and advocates on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which kicks off today.

Their goal is to promote urgent action to combat poverty and tackle the climate crisis.

“As we go to renewables, relying more on the sun, wind and hydro, we’ve got to make sure that as people lose jobs and as their livelihoods are eroded, and as towns where we used to draw fossil fuels [become] deserted, we have to make sure that the transition for ordinary people becomes a transition that they benefit from,” President Ramaphosa stressed.

The Head of State believes workers should not fear job loss without being skilled in new technologies.

A prime example of South Africa's commitment to skilling workers in new technologies is the partnership between the Mpumalanga Provincial Government (which is home to about 80% of power stations in South Africa), the Presidential Climate Commission, the Climate Investment Fund and the World Bank. The entities are working together to explore plans on re-skilling and upskilling the most vulnerable in the labour force and supporting small businesses and co-operatives in local communities.

In last year's State of the Province Address, former Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane assured citizens that plans towards the Just Energy Transition will leave no one behind.

READ | Just energy transition to be inclusive

South Africa faces challenges due to its reliance on fossil fuels, while witnessing growth in the climate sector.

Currently, only 3% of global investments in renewable infrastructure are allocated to Africa, while the European Commission aims to triple renewable energy investment by 2030.

“Africa is well endowed with sun and wind, and that can be utilised to good effect to grow our economies to ensure that at a social level, people have access to electricity,” President Ramaphosa said.

However, he stated that this does not come cheaply and requires financing and clear decisions by leaders, not only on the African continent but globally as well.

He emphasised the need for collaboration between African countries and developed nations to fulfil commitments and secure essential funding and technology.

According to the President, energy drives growth and economies.

The 12-month ’Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg’ campaign aims to scale renewable energy in Africa by leveraging South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

The initiative seeks to tackle issues of inequality and promote sustainable development, to provide access to power to millions who currently lack electricity.

According to President Ramaphosa, South Africa's G20 Presidency will also focus on the importance of solidarity and equality in addressing global challenges, particularly in the context of Africa’s history of inequality.

Preparations are underway for South Africa’s G20 Presidency and the hosting of the G20 Summit in 2025. South Africa is set to assume the Chair of the G20 from Brazil on 1 December this year.

The country’s first citizen also touched on the role of the upcoming 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in focusing on a just transition and the importance of global support for this transition.

In her address, Von der Leyen outlined the European Green Deal and its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. While underscoring the importance of global cooperation, she said there was a need to ensure no continent is left behind, particularly Africa.

“But if we want to be successful in fighting climate change and protecting nature, we must think globally.

“We will only be successful if we leave no continent behind, and [ensure] the transition in Africa is a just one.

“Africa has, as we said, all the resources necessary in abundance -- sun and wind, and 60% of the best solar places worldwide. But only 3% of the global investments in infrastructure for renewables go to Africa. And with that, the task is clear. We must step up,” Von der Leyen said. – SAnews.gov.za

Government welcomes S&P’s decision to revise SA’s outlook to positive

Government welcomes S&P’s decision to revise SA’s outlook to positive

Government has noted and welcomed S&P Global Rating’s decision to revise South Africa’s outlook to positive from stable and affirm the sovereign’s long-term foreign and local currency debt ratings at ‘BB-’ and ‘BB’, respectively.

According to S&P, the positive outlook reflects the agency’s view that increased political stability following the May 2024 general elections and impetus for reform could boost private investment and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

“S&P further states that since the formation of the new broad coalition of 11 political parties under the Government of National Unity (GNU), debt yields and portfolio inflows have improved, leading to easing financing conditions and currency strengthening,” the National Treasury said in a statement.

According to S&P, despite the government publishing weaker fiscal projections in the most recent Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) compared with those it published in the February 2024 Budget Review, the agency sees higher fiscal policy predictability regarding efforts towards achieving primary surpluses and fiscal consolidation.

The National Treasury highlighted that government’s strategy focuses on achieving fiscal sustainability, supporting economic growth and critical social services, and addressing significant fiscal and economic risks.

The four pillars of the economic growth strategy are maintaining macroeconomic stability; implementing structural reforms; building state capability and supporting growth-enhancing public infrastructure investment. – SAnews.gov.za

Regional Call-For-Action From the Children of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Location: News

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

All children have the right to a quality education, to grow up in a safe and secure environment and to be protected from harm. Children's rights are human rights, enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Yet too many children cannot realize these rights and face exclusion, discrimination, violence, and exploitation. Children have the right to grow up in a world where every child is valued, included, empowered and protected.

As children of Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa Zambia and Zimbabwe, we recognize all the work done our respective Governments to promote the rights of children. But there is still much work to do to ensure that the rights of all children to a quality education are protected, promoted and fulfilled - without discrimination.

Our unified Call-for-Action on World Children's Day, aligned with the specific theme of the 2024 Regional World Children's Day commemorations "Educate and Skill the African Child for Posterity" is to drive progress in the following areas. Our Call-for-Action is informed by broad national consultations involving more than 5000 children across our seven countries, organized among our peers with the support of our Governments and civil society partners.

We, the children from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, call on our leaders to listen to our voices, include us in decisions which affect us, adopt and implement our solutions and invest in our present and future.

We call on our Governments to take concerted action on the following issues:

To ensure access to Education:

  • Ensure all children – including children from disadvantaged backgrounds - have access to quality education, providing financial support for those in need and addressing the specific needs of girls and boys to access education.
  • Strengthen and enrich curricula to ensure inclusion of practical life skills that enhance daily living and learning to earning. Curriculum content should be designed to ensure relevance and meet the current demands of children.
  • Quality education needs to be innovative, allowing critical thinking and creativity, ensuring appropriate learning materials and a supportive learning environment, and facilitating engagement and practical skills development. Governments should provide this in consultation with children.
  • Educators should be equipped to deliver quality education, making learning fresh, and impactful, and delivered in pleasant environments and infrastructure, conducive to learning, including well-equipped labs and libraries.

For an inclusive and quality education system:

  • Provide children with equal opportunities for education, including children with disabilities and those in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Ensure integrated learning environments, allowing students to interact and collaborate with peers with special education needs from a young age instead of being separated.
  • Employ well-trained and qualified teachers for better learning outcomes; increase teacher salaries and benefits to improve retention.
  • Construct child- and disability-friendly infrastructure and provide sufficient teaching resources, including solar power for uninterrupted learning, build schools closer to communities or provide transportation for students.
  • Involve parents, guardians and community leaders in creating an inclusive education system – including adolescent girls at risk of drop out of school, children involved in child labour, minority groups and children with disabilities – to ensure no child is left behind.

To ensure relevant education, including emerging issues:

  • Ensure an education that is impactful and useful to us in the current modern and developing world; an education with a positive impact in our lives, be it present or in future as we transition to the world of work; the curriculum should equip us with relevant skills to navigate life from a very young age.
  • We want a curriculum that is aligned with the rest of the world and puts emphasis on digital literacy. This will be achieved by improving ICT infrastructure in all schools.
  • Expand and enhance climate change education programmes and teach us about climate change, the environment, responsible and sustainable consumption and production as core subjects in class and/or school clubs focusing on climate.
  • Ensure we have access to education in a safe learning environment, also during emergencies.

***

Children's Pledge of Commitment

As children from Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, we stand united in our belief that our voices and actions matter. We are committed to being responsible citizens, ready to support and work alongside our Governments, leaders, parents and organisations to create a better future for all children in our region.

We the children the children from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe commit to:

  • Actively participate in child parliaments, school councils, junior councils as well as other student forums, and take full advantage of opportunities to voice our ideas about curriculum and school programmes. By sharing our perspectives, we will help create an education system that meets our needs.
  • Advocate for the development of public libraries and recreational facilities, using these spaces for personal growth and encouraging others to engage in learning, sports, and creative activities that benefit our well-being.
  • Make our schools and communities more inclusive by embracing diversity, offering support, and advocating for accessibility in all areas. Together, we can create an environment where everyone can thrive, belong and feel safe.
  • Use technology responsibly and enhance our digital skills. We will engage in ICT programmes, share our knowledge with peers, and encourage others to join us in developing the skills needed to succeed in a digital world.
  • Learn and educate ourselves and others on climate change and commit to sustainable practices in our daily lives. Through small acts like reducing waste and participating in community clean-up efforts, we can help protect our planet for generations to come.
  • Make our classrooms more collaborative, helping our teachers, and supporting our peers, in a quest to foster a culture of mutual respect and encouragement, to overcome challenges together.

President arrives in Brazil to lead SA’s participation at G20 Summit

President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Brazil on Saturday night to lead South Africa’s participation in the Group of Twenty (G20) Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will be held between 18 and 19 November 2024, will focus on “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet”.

“Brazil’s G20 Presidency continues the global south rotating Presidency and during its tenure prioritises social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty, energy transitions and the promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social, environmental dimensions and the reform of global governance Institutions,” the Presidency said in a statement.

On Sunday, 17 November 2024, President Ramaphosa will participate in the launch of the Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg Campaign.

On Monday, 18 November 2024, at the beginning of the Leaders’ Summit, the President will present South Africa’s statements during plenary sessions. These statements will focus on the fight against hunger and poverty and the reform of global governance institutions.

South Africa will officially receive the G20 Presidency during the Leaders’ Summit and will continue to build on the initiatives of its Global South predecessors starting from 1 December 2024, under the rallying call of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”.

The G20 is the leading forum for global economic cooperation and governance, representing 85% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 75% of global trade, and two-thirds of the global population.

It serves as a platform to promote effective multilateral cooperation by uniting the world’s major economies to ensure economic stability and sustainable growth worldwide.

The G20 consists of 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Russia, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States. Additionally, it includes two organisations: the African Union and the European Union.

The President is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the margins of the Leaders’ Summit.

According to the Presidency, South Africa’s participation in the G20 is guided by the four strategic foreign policy pillars.

These include advancing national interests to attain domestic objectives, enhancing the African agenda and promoting Africa’s sustainable development, South-South Cooperation and influencing the global multilateral architecture by advancing the agenda of the South through North-South dialogue.

“South Africa’s participation in the G20 therefore seeks to provide strategic direction in establishing a more equitable, representative and fit-for-purpose international order, in support of the main multilateral processes under the United Nations.”

JETOUR Joins Hands with DISCOVERY and Cheetah Conservation Fund in Wildlife Conservation, Practicing “Travel as ESG” Philosophy

Location: News
JETOUR

Recently, at the JETOUR Global Travel+ Conference 2024 (www.JETOURGlobal.com) in Fuzhou, JETOUR emphasized the importance of wildlife conservation and reaffirmed its strong commitment to the pursuit of "Travel as ESG Practices". After releasing a teaser of Discovery's documentary "Return of the Cheetah", JETOUR invited the documentary's protagonist, Hazen Audel, a renowned biologist and artist, to jointly launch the charity auction for the protection of cheetahs. JETOUR announced that all proceeds from the auction will be donated to cheetah conservation, continuing its consistent support for ecological conservation.

JETOUR: Cheetah Protection will be Our Long-term Public Service

At the conference, more than 1,000 people watched the teaser of the documentary "Return of the Cheetah". The documentary, jointly produced by JETOUR, the Discovery Channel and the Cheetah Conservation Fund, uses the Namibian grasslands in Africa as a backdrop to illustrate the plight of the cheetah around the world, and to encourage more people to get involved in this public welfare activity and help protect the environment for the survival of wildlife, including the cheetah.

While discussing cheetah conservation with Dr. Laura Marker, founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund, and Hazen Audel, the main character in the documentary, Ke Chuandeng, Vice President of JETOUR Auto, said, "Public welfare is not just about giving. It is about encouraging more people to get involved. Through our cheetah conservation project, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation and inspire more people to get involved. When we add up every small act of kindness, it creates energy that can help build a better and more harmonious world.”

On September 20, 2024, JETOUR officially announced its strategic partnership with CCF in South Africa. In support of CCF, JETOUR will sponsor the care of two orphan/non-releasable cheetahs and donate official vehicles to improve cheetah habitats. JETOUR has successfully adopted a wild cheetah and partnered with the Discovery Channel to produce the documentary "Return of the Cheetah" about the growth of the cheetah cub. Hazen Audel also brought his own hand-carved "Cheetah's Guardian" artwork for the auction. He said, "I am very fortunate to be able to participate in the ESG project of cheetah conservation, and during the filming of the documentary I was very touched by the actions of JETOUR and CCF to help cheetahs continue to live on earth. With the sculptures I created for cheetah conservation, I hope to attract new people to see what's happening in the world. I wanted the proceeds from the sculptures to go back into the efforts of wildlife conservation.

Travel as ESG Practices: Enriching the "Travel+" Strategy

Currently, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) mission has become a significant trend in corporate development. JETOUR has incorporated ESG mission into its business and global development since its establishment.

In China, JETOUR launched the long-term charitable program of "Journey of Hope", focusing on the education and healthcare of left-behind children. Since 2020, JETOUR and its users have organized over 300 charitable activities. The company also established an ESG section on its app, encouraging users to participate in various charitable activities, with plans to hold 2,000 events over the next decade.

Internationally, JETOUR follows the "In somewhere. For somewhere" philosophy, conducting various charitable activities, such as traffic safety campaigns in Angola, sponsorship of vehicles for disabled athletes in Peru, support for rural road construction in Kazakhstan, and donations to children's education in Saudi Arabia. Through these initiatives, JETOUR continues to demonstrate that travel and ESG are deeply interconnected, creating social value for regions where it operates.

Li Xueyong, President of JETOUR Auto, said, “With the development of JETOUR's global business, we are increasingly aware of the harmonious symbiosis between economic development and the ecological environment. If we treat the earth well, the earth will treat us well. Cooperation with CCF is just the beginning. In the future, we will continue to support ecological conservation and contribute to global sustainable development.”

Government to host Construction Summit

Government to host Construction Summit

Concerns around the so-called construction mafia, security and other criminal activity at construction sites, as well as the promotion of practical solutions for building crime-free environments within the construction industry, will come under the spotlight at the Construction Summit on Crime-Free Construction Sites next week.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb), will host the summit at the Durban International Convention Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson, has expressed his strong commitment to addressing crime at construction sites across the country.

“This is a fulfilment of a promise I made shortly after taking office to host a summit to deal with construction site stoppages nationwide.

“Construction sites should be places where workers build not just structures, but also a sense of safety, respect and trust. Unfortunately, crime has been a persistent challenge in the sector, undermining productivity, escalating costs and putting lives at risk,” Macpherson said.

The Minister committed to working with industry stakeholders to find solutions for safer work environments and underscored the government's dedication to eliminating crime, ensuring that workers return home safely each day.

The SAPS will also play a key part in the stakeholder engagement as law enforcement plays a critical role in maintaining security. Accordingly, Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, is expected to address the summit to reinforce the role of the police in combatting crime in the sector.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is also expected to speak at Tuesday’s summit.Other Speakers will include the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and the Mayor of eThekwini.

The cidb, a key partner in ensuring the professionalism and development of the construction industry, is equally dedicated to creating a conducive environment for effective delivery of infrastructure.

Bongani Dladla, CEO of the cidb, highlighted the importance of industry-wide collaboration in promoting security and efficiency in construction.

"We’re looking forward to playing an active role in this summit as we strongly believe that the construction industry is vital to our nation's growth, and addressing crime is essential to protecting both assets and the lives of those who build our future. The cidb is committed to supporting initiatives like the National Construction Summit to set new safety standards and collaborate with the DPWI, law enforcement, and industry partners to make construction sites safer and more efficient,” said Dladla.

The summit will feature a series of expert-led discussions on legislation and policy, security and law enforcement, community engagement, empowerment, skills development and other strategic topics to equip stakeholders with the tools needed to combat crime on construction sites.

It will also provide an opportunity for networking and forging partnerships aimed at improving site security and promoting the safety of workers. - SAnews.gov.za

Support for manufacturing remains a priority for government

Support for manufacturing remains a priority for government

Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield says supporting the manufacturing sector in South Africa remains a key priority for government, as this will lead to more sustainable growth and job creation.

Whitfield was speaking during a site visit to the Usabco Addis manufacturing plant in Cape Town, Western Cape.

According to Whitfield, supporting the manufacturing sector and developing policies that are competitively driven will contribute immensely and respond to some of the issues that the sector is currently facing.

“As the world changes, South Africa is well positioned globally to look at innovative ways to develop and grow the sector. Research, innovation, localisation, the green economy and trade agreements are some of the tools and factors that can be used to position the sector as the leader on the continent,” said Whitfield.

Whitfield commended Usabco Addis for its contribution to the circular economy. This as 40% of the company’s products are produced from recycled plastics and he encouraged the company to find ways to increase its recycled inputs further.

The company currently employs over 800 people, and the Minister was impressed by its efforts to increase its local market share and the creation of even more jobs.

Whitfield also pointed out that the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) funding agencies, such as the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) can be engaged to fund some of the projects that can assist the sector.

“Government does not underestimate nor take for granted the contribution and the investment that the sector has made over the years. It is for us as the department to be in a well-informed position to come with policies that will sustain the sector going forward.

“Ultimately, our job in government is to make it easier for businesses to grow and create jobs, and for our people to get those jobs and keep those jobs.”

Whitfield added that Africa was seen as the next frontier in the manufacturing sector with the African Continental Free Trade Area’s (AfCFTA) drive to boost intra-Africa trade, encourage investment, and stimulate economic growth.

He said that this was an opportunity the country must take full advantage of, as the continent moves in the right direction to curb red tape and drive trade with each other.

“The dtic’s urgent priority over the next five years is to create rapid, inclusive, sustainable growth and job creation through manufacturing, services, investments and export lead growth,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

They will also touch on meaningful networking and collaboration opportunities to support SMME growth and investment initiatives. The gathering will also highlight investment in key economic sectors promoting sustainable development and addressing critical economic drivers.

“Government continues to champion partnership with the private sector, labour and civil society in tackling some of the most immediate challenges facing the South African economy,” the statement read.

Cabinet updated on SA’s water challenges

Cabinet updated on SA’s water challenges

Government has urged the residents of Hammanskraal in Gauteng to exercise patience while work is underway to install a new water treatment plant at the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works.

The call was made by Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, during a post-Cabinet media briefing held in Cape Town on Wednesday.

“In 2023, the Ministry of Water and Sanitation directed Magalies Water to urgently intervene in terms of the Water Services Act, 1997 (Act 108 of 1997) and to design and install a new water-treatment plant at its Klipdrift Water Treatment Works near Hammanskraal.

“This will help ease the water challenges and provide long-term solutions. This additional water treatment plant will supply water to certain reservoirs in the city’s water distribution system to increase the supply of clean drinking water to Hammanskraal.

“Government urges the people of Hammanskraal and surrounding areas to be patient while this work is underway. The first phase is expected to be completed by 15 November 2024. This will allow the City of Tshwane to deliver potable water to some areas of Hammanskraal,” she said.

Ntshavheni acknowledged that the water challenges facing the community continue to negatively affect the lives of the people, including the provision of healthcare services at local facilities such as the Jubilee Hospital.

She moved to assure residents that Cabinet had received and considered a report from the Water and Sanitation Department on Hammanskraal.

“The City of Tshwane is currently implementing a R278 million project to repair the previously dysfunctional Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW).

“It is expected that increasing the capacity of the Rooiwal WWTW will cost about R2 billion. Cabinet was informed that the City of Tshwane will have to fund this project through revenue, borrowing or its Urban Settlements Development Grant allocations from the Department of Human Settlements,” she said.

Water restrictions

Meanwhile, the Minister said Cabinet was given an update on the level 1 water restrictions in Johannesburg which are due to begin on Thursday.

The restrictions were announced earlier this week and will see water supply throttled from 9am to 4pm daily.

READ | City of Johannesburg to implement water restrictions

“Cabinet was appraised of the level 1 water restrictions that are in place in Gauteng due to continued water demand as a result of high consumption caused by population growth, illegal connections, leaks and [the] misuse of water.

“The average consumption in Gauteng is 279 litres per capita per day compared to the international average of 173 litres per capita per day. Whilst the metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng have level 1 water restrictions in place, very little enforcement is undertaken by the municipalities.

“The Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Premier of Gauteng have requested the municipalities to impose level 2 water restrictions which will come with fines if consumers do not adhere to the restrictions,” Ntshavheni said.

She added that a National Water Crisis Committee is in the works to bolster water-related work nationally.

“Cabinet supported the decision by the President to augment the work that is currently spearheaded by the Deputy President [Paul Mashatile] by elevating the water matters as a crisis and establish a National Water Crisis committee that will develop a water action plan and bring in water experts in order to intervene to the nation-wide water challenges in the local government space,” she said.

Municipal water debt

Ntshavheni warned that the R23 billion collectively owed by municipalities to water boards was rising and unsustainable

She said Cabinet had been appraised on this debt.

“The debt threatens the financial viability of the water boards and the entire water sector. Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, recently met with several of the affected municipalities and received commitments to pay from most non-paying municipalities.

“Cabinet had previously approved the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to address municipal turnaround. The IMC will also prioritise measures to address municipal debt payments to water boards, particularly those facing imminent bankruptcy,” she said. - SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet congratulates Botswana, Mozambique and the USA

Cabinet has extended its congratulations to the governments and people of the Republic of Botswana, Mozambique and the United States of America (USA) on the successful conclusion of their recent elections.

“Cabinet commends the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalitions in Botswana on its success under the leadership of President-elect Duma Boko, and welcomed the establishment of transitional plans between the outgoing administration and the incoming administration of President-elect Boko,” Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said in a post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday.

Cabinet has also congratulated Mozambican President-elect Daniel Chapo and his party, FRELIMO, on their victory following the country’s historic election, which was held 32 years following the signing of the General Peace Agreement.

The agreement brought an end to the civil war and introduced multi-party democracy in Mozambique.

US Election outcome

Cabinet has further congratulated President-elect Donald Trump following the US elections held on 5 November 2024.

“South Africa looks forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump over the next 12 months when President Cyril Ramaphosa assumes the Presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2024,” Cabinet said.

Answering a question on whether the US Presidential election outcome will change anything between South Africa and the US, Ntshavheni said government has indicated that it relates with the US government and that "it doesn’t matter which administration is in place".

“Our trade relationship is with the government of the day, and we continue to engage with them and whether there are trade issues or other diplomatic issues. Our view is that our participation in AGOA [African Growth and Opportunity Act] is anchored by the value that South Africa adds in the AGOA process, and how its participation adds value for the American economy – that is the position we maintain,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

MTBPS welcomed by Cabinet

MTBPS welcomed by Cabinet

The Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) is a demonstration of South Africa’s openness and accountability on spending.

This according to Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on the outcomes of Cabinet's recent meeting.

The MTBPS was tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in Parliament two weeks ago.

“The MTBPS is part of our nation’s open and accountable budget cycle, which allows for medium to long-term financial planning of our nation’s finance. It also allows South Africans to hold government departments and entities to account on spending and gives investors surety over the country’s economic direction.

“[The MTBPS] gives effect to the commitments of the Government of National Unity to pursue rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and create a more just and equitable society by tackling poverty, inequality and unemployment,” she said.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet had welcomed the MTBPS, which supports the Government of National Unity’s aims.

During the delivery of the MTBPS in October, Godongwana highlighted four pillars to spur on inclusive economic growth, namely:

  • Maintaining macroeconomic stability.
  • Implementing structural reforms.
  • Building State capability.
  • Supporting growth-enhancing public infrastructure investment.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet is backing the statement delivered by Godongwana.

“Cabinet supports the four pillars to uplift the economy through macroeconomic stability, implementing structural reforms, building State capability and increasing public infrastructure investment.

“The country is also on track to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) greylist, having already addressed 16 of the 22 action items identified ahead of FATF reassessment in 2025,” Ntshavheni said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA to play key role at upcoming G20 Summit

South Africa is set to play a pivotal role at the upcoming G20 Summit next week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as it prepares to assume the G20 presidency in December.

The G20 Leaders' Summit which will take place from 18-19 November 2024, will bring together leaders from the 19 member countries, along with representatives from the African Union and the European Union.

Representing nearly 60% of the global population, 80% of global gross domestic product (GDP), and 75% of global exports, the G20 stands as a vital platform for international economic cooperation and sustainable development.

Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Minister Ronald Lamola, said the G20 is a preeminent forum on whose stage, global economic cooperation is facilitated.

“In terms of promoting the economic interests of the Global South, South Africa considers the G20 to be an important vehicle for advancing the aspirations of developing countries, and Africa’s development priorities in particular,” Lamola said.

The Summit will conclude the work of Brazil’s rotating G20 presidency, where world leaders will review and approve agreements addressing pressing global challenges.

The Minister emphasised that supporting emerging and developing economies to achieve sustainable development is vital for global stability and security, reducing resource pressures, population movements and the risk of conflict.

“This is especially important for the African continent. We will support the President at the G20 in Brazil. The G20 Summit represents the conclusion of the work carried out by the country holding the group's rotating presidency. It is the moment when heads of state and government approve the agreements negotiated throughout the year and point out ways of dealing with global challenges,” he said.

South Africa is already playing an enhanced role as a member of the G20 Troika, together with Brazil and India, in support of one of Brazil’s foremost priorities of the reform of the Global Governance Institutions.

This is where G20 Leaders are expected to advance efforts for a reinvigorated and strengthened multilateral system, rooted in the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, with renewed institutions and a reformed governance that is more representative, effective, transparent and accountable, reflecting the social, economic and political realities of the 21st century.

The summit also marks the lead-up to South Africa’s presidency of the G20, which it will assume on 01 December, 2024.

Presidency welcomes Quarterly Labour Force Survey

Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, has welcomed the results of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the third quarter of 2024.

The results were released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Tuesday.

The survey revealed a positive trend in the South African labour force, with a decline in the unemployment rate.

The official unemployment rate decreased to 32.1% in the third quarter of 2024, down from 33.5% in the previous quarter.

The number of employed people increased by 294 000 to 16.9 million. The number of unemployed people decreased by 373 000 to 8.0 million.

Minister pleased with the rebounding construction sector

Location: News

Minister pleased with the rebounding construction sector

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dr Dean Macpherson, says he is pleased to see the construction sector rebounding.

The sector saw the largest job increases out of all sectors between Quarter 2 and Quarter 3, according to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, released on Tuesday.

The construction sector added 176 000 jobs, with the country’s unemployment rate decreasing by 1.4%.

Macpherson said this shows that there are many green shoots within the construction industry, with additional reforms underway to increase investment and jobs.

According to Statistics South Africa, who released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, South Africa’s unemployment figures have now decreased to 32.1% in the third quarter.

“While the unemployment figures remain stubbornly high, I am encouraged by the job growth seen in the construction sector which has shown that there are many green shoots within the industry. As we implement continued reforms to turn South Africa into a construction site, I look forward to the industry creating many more jobs which will improve the lives of our people,” Macpherson said.

“After many years where the construction industry has seen subdued investment, it is also very encouraging to see that the industry is starting to turn around as additional projects get off the ground.

“This is also a sign of confidence in proceeding with fixed investment projects. We are truly starting to build a better South Africa through building confidence in our construction industry,” the minister said.

Among the many interventions the Minister is implementing to attract additional infrastructure investment include:

  • Restructuring Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) to become a single port of entry for all major infrastructure projects in South Africa.
  • Reforming regulations around Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to make it easier for the private sector to invest in construction projects.
  • Expanding the role of the Infrastructure Fund (IF) to play a bigger role in attracting additional private sector funding and blended financing to construction projects.
  • Introducing the first-of-its-kind project preparation financing which will see more construction projects being executed faster.

“Collectively, the measures we are implementing will see a significant increase in the number of construction projects in the country as we work to achieve our goal of turning South Africa into a construction site.

“In the weeks and months ahead, South Africans can look forward to seeing more cranes in the sky, and shovels in the ground. We are building South Africa,” Macpherson said. – SAnews.gov.za

Multichoice Group Maintains Strategic Momentum Despite Macroeconomic Challenges

Location: Business

MultiChoice Group

  • Unprecedented foreign exchange pressures and economic challenges in key African markets impacted earnings and dampens subscriber growth
  • On track to right-size cost base and grow new revenue streams to drive future growth as streaming gains traction at the expense of traditional pay-tv
  • Cost-cutting measures delivered R1.3bn in permanent savings, on track to reach increased full-year target of R2.5 billion
  • Showmax customer base grew 50% YoY as a leading streaming service in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Strong revenue growth in new products: DStv Steam +71%, DStv Internet +85%, DStv Insurance +31%, KingMakers +53%
  • Strong liquidity of R10 billion provides solid financial base to support growth
  • Negative equity position on track to be resolved in November 2024.

MultiChoice Group (MCG or The Group) (www.MultiChoice.com) continued to deliver exceptional video entertainment and execute on core strategic initiatives during the first six months ended 30 September 2024 (1H FY25). However, unprecedented foreign exchange volatility severely impacted the Group's interim financial results, while ongoing macroeconomic challenges weighed on customer growth and moderated overall performance.

Facing the most challenging operating conditions in almost 40 years and to generate desired returns, the Group has been proactive in its focus to ”right-size” the business for the current economic realities and industry changes. Although operating across Africa typically subjects the group to currency moves, abnormal currency weakness over the past 18 months have reduced the group's profits by close to R7 billion. Combined with the impact of a weak macro environment on consumers' disposable income and therefore on subscriber growth, it required the Group to fundamentally adjust its cost base - which is exactly what has been done. The normal cost savings program was accelerated, resulting in permanent savings of R1.3bn in over the past six months and an increased target of ZAR2.5bn for the full year.

“We are making good progress in addressing the technical insolvency that resulted from non-cash accounting entries at the end of the last financial year. We expect to return to a positive net equity position by the end of November this year, supported by a number of developments and initiatives. The Group's liquidity position remains strong, with over ZAR10bn in total available funds,” says Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice Group CEO.

The Group is also adjusting to global pay-TV challenges as streaming services, the rise of social media and changing consumer preference impact the traditional broadcast business. Showmax, which reported 50% growth YoY in its paying customer base, strategically positions the business to actively participate in the streaming revolution as it gains momentum across Africa. To create sufficient capacity and drive growth, the group stepped-up its investment in this business by an incremental ZAR1.6 billion during the interim period.

“We have successfully been implementing our strategy over the past few years, achieving key milestones such as our investment in KingMakers, returning the Rest of Africa business to profitability in FY23 and FY24, concluding the Showmax partnership with Comcast and investing in Moment. While we've made huge inroads to reduce our cost base, there's still more work to be done”.

“However, our focus extends beyond cost efficiency—we are equally committed to grow the business. We remain committed to driving new revenue streams and see significant medium to long-term opportunities in video entertainment, particularly in streaming, and in our adjacent new businesses,” says Mawela

The Group reported strong momentum in its new products and services, which all delivered robust   YoY revenue growth, i.e. DStv Stream +71%, DStv Internet +85% and DStv Insurance + 31%. KingMakers reported a healthy 27% increase in its online monthly active users in Nigeria and grew its revenue in Naira by 53%, while newly-launched SuperSportBet is showing good early traction in South Africa.

Financial Results Overview

Subscriber base: The pressure on the linear pay-TV subscriber base was lower than the previous six-months, reflecting a 5% decline (0.8m) compared to 6% reported (1.0m) in 2H FY24. This reflects an improving sequential trend. On a YoY basis, the linear subscriber base declined by 11% or 1.8m subscribers to 14.9m active subscribers, impacted by the challenging macroeconomic conditions that negatively impacted discretionary consumer spend.

Group revenues: Revenues increased by 4% YoY to ZAR25.4bn on an organic basis, due to disciplined inflationary pricing and revenue growth of new products. On a reported basis, revenues declined by 10%, impacted by foreign exchange pressures on the Rest of Africa business and a stronger Rand against the US Dollar.

Group trading profit: The Group's ongoing cost optimisation drive delivered ZAR1.3bn in savings, and together with other improvements in the business, it resulted in a 33% increase in trading profit before incorporating the Showmax costs. A ZAR1.6bn step-up in the investment behind Showmax to create capacity for growth, trimmed the organic trading profit to ZAR5.0, a decline of only 1% YoY. Foreign exchange losses in the Rest of Africa business amounting to ZAR2.3bn reduced reported trading profit to ZAR2.7bn.

Adjusted core headline earnings, the board's measure of the underlying performance of the business, amounted to ZAR7m, impacted by foreign exchange losses and the investment in Showmax.

Cash flow and liquidity: The Group free cash flow remained positive at ZAR0.6bn, with ZAR5.7bn retained in cash and cash equivalents. Despite the increase in net interest costs and a higher average debt balance, the Group remains well-positioned to navigate current challenges with access to ZAR4.4bn in undrawn facilities.

KZN commits to economic development, investment growth toward 2030

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has underscored the commitment to economic development, trade, and investment growth toward 2030, aligned with the province's broader strategic priorities.

Ntuli reiterated the province’s commitment during the KwaZulu-Natal Trade and Investment Conference currently underway at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

The two-day conference, which started on Monday, aims to promote, brand, and market KwaZulu-Natal as an investment destination, identify and develop investment opportunities, among others.

The conference brings together investors, government leaders, and industry captains to explore and amplify the province’s status as a top investment destination.

Delivering his keynote address on Monday, Ntuli highlighted that over the past decade, KwaZulu-Natal has attracted significant investments in key sectors, especially through developments at the Durban and Richards Bay Ports, two of Africa’s largest and busiest maritime hubs.

“Enhanced container capacity, automation, and infrastructure upgrades have strengthened KZN’s position as a regional logistics powerhouse. Similarly, the Dube Trade Port, adjacent to King Shaka International Airport, has drawn over R2 billion in investments, cementing its role in warehousing, logistics, and agriculture, including the Dube AgriZone, a major hub for export-focused agri-business,” Ntuli said.

Reflecting on the 2019 Provincial Trade and Investment Strategy’s achievements and areas for intensified effort, Ntuli said the strategy targeted R76 billion in new and expansionary investments by 2024. This is alongside the creation of approximately 68 000 jobs and an increase in the province’s national export value to R1.28 trillion.

While projections indicate that the targets may not be fully met by the year’s end, the Premier emphasised the need to redouble efforts in investment initiatives.

“The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) has fuelled growth in heavy industry and energy, particularly in metals like aluminium and steel, generating jobs and boosting export potential.

“Renewable energy investments, particularly in biomass and solar, have diversified KZN’s energy landscape, with biofuel production from the sugarcane industry enhancing the province’s green economy credentials.”

Growth in the agricultural sector

The Premier also highlighted the province’s strong agricultural sector, which has attracted investments in agro-processing, and supporting industries including sugar refining, dairy processing, and timber.

The Premier said this growth is further supported by a thriving food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical, and packaging sectors, benefiting from proximity to key ports and an expanding consumer base.

Tourism

He said tourism also remains central to KZN’s economy, supported by new hospitality investments, including the reopening of the international Hilton Hotel and the Durban Beach promenade renewal.

Noting KZN’s absence from many long-haul tourist packages, Premier Ntuli stressed the importance of positioning the province as a key destination for international tourism.

Ntuli highlighted several strategic assets crucial to the province’s competitive advantage, and these include expanded port capacities, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) like Richards Bay and Dube TradePort, and streamlined regulatory and tax incentives to attract foreign and local investments.

The Premier urged stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers KZN unprecedented access to a $3.4 trillion market.

Partnerships

The Premier also addressed issues in freight rail services and port bottlenecks, emphasising that public-private partnerships could unlock efficiencies.

He further called attention to KZN’s role in automotive manufacturing, underscoring opportunities in electric vehicle (EV) component production to tap into Africa’s growing EV market.

“Sustainable growth initiatives, including green hydrogen, biomass, and digital innovation, are essential for positioning KZN as a leader in the renewable and digital economies. Collaboration with local universities and technology firms is building a skilled workforce to support industries like IT, finance, and business outsourcing, further enhancing KZN’s role as a technology and logistics hub,” Ntuli said.

The Premier emphasised the importance of resilient infrastructure, including sustainable energy investments, and inclusive growth that extends to all municipalities, cities, and rural areas.

He issued a call to action for deeper engagement with rural and municipal stakeholders, ensuring these areas are active participants and beneficiaries in KZN’s economic growth. – SAnews.gov.za

Youth could be Africa’s most valuable resource, says Minister

Youth could be Africa’s most valuable resource, says Minister

Africa’s vast youth population could be the continent’s most valuable asset, potentially transforming it into a global leader in innovation, industry and economic development.

With over 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said the continent stood on the cusp of a youth-driven growth wave that could fuel its economies and contribute to global prosperity.

The realisation of this immense potential depends on one fundamental factor - which is education.

“If we are to transform our continent’s demographic advantage into a true growth engine, we must ensure that Africa’s young people are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and abilities they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.

“This is both our challenge and our opportunity. Africa’s youth have the potential to form the largest working-age population in the world by the year 2063, but that will benefit the continent only if they are adequately educated and skilled to meet the demands of tomorrow’s industries,” Gwarube said.

The Minister was addressing the Partnerships for Education Business Breakfast held at the Johannesburg Council for The Disabled in Lenasia on Monday.

The Partnerships for Education Business Breakfast is designed to foster meaningful dialogue and establish partnerships to alleviate budgetary constraints in the education sector.

The event convened 100 business leaders from the private sector to discuss collaborative strategies to crowd in private sector resources to improve educational outcomes in South Africa.

The breakfast included presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for leaders committed to investing in education as a foundation for economic growth and social progress.

Gwarube praised the potential of Africa’s youth to be the productivity drivers and innovators of tomorrow.

The Minister added that the youth represent Africa's future, as a driver of global progress and they are already demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability.

She said the young Africans are technologically savvy, innovative, and highly motivated, and they bring energy, optimism, and creative problem-solving to every sector they touch.

“Even when stats show that ours is a continent with the lowest levels of connectivity, young people are leveraging digital technology, they are leading the thinking on renewable energy out of sheer necessity of energy poverty, and are leading social entrepreneurship to bridge the gap in what economists refer to as the bottom of the pyramid consumer market. Young Africans are pushing boundaries and setting trends,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za
