SAPS rescues kidnapped businessmen

SAPS rescues kidnapped businessmen

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has assured the nation that it has the necessary expertise to rescue victims of kidnappings. This, as it rescued two businessmen hours after they were hijacked and kidnapped in Gauteng.

In a statement on Tuesday, the SAPS said the two were rescued by an Anti-Kidnapping Task Team on Monday after their hijacking and kidnapping in Midrand.

The men were hijacked by a group of criminals driving a silver/grey Hyundai i10 on the premises of a car rental company. They were then taken to a bush along the R21 where they were forced to hand over their bank cards and pins.

The kidnappers then began withdrawing large sums of money from their bank accounts.

“A multidisciplinary team led by the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team were alerted and immediately mobilised.  The two male victims were found in dense bushes and rescued. Their hijacked SUV Range Rover was later recovered in Tembisa.

“The SAPS would like to assure the nation that it has the necessary expertise to rescue victims of kidnappings and urge friends, family and bystanders to immediately alert the SAPS when they become aware of any crime, including an active kidnapping,” said the SAPS on Tuesday.

The police also encouraged “citizens to be more vigilant and alert of their surroundings and report any suspicious activities.”

“The SAPS applauds the teams involved in this operation which include the National Crime Intelligence Counter and Security Team, Police Emergency Services, SAPS Flying Squad, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing and Vision Tactical Security Company.”

A manhunt has been launched for the kidnappers who evaded arrest and are said to be utilising the Hyundai i10 to commit their crimes.

Citizens are urged to be alert and those who have information are encouraged to come forward to assist police investigations. – SAnews.gov.za

Rhino poachers handed prison sentences

Rhino poachers handed prison sentences

Police have commended the sentencing of three wildlife poachers, who have been found guilty of a number of serious crimes by the Skukuza Regional Court.

Two South African citizens, Sam Khosa (40) and Solly Bennett Selahle (30), and Mozambican national, Oddis Maluleke (46), were sentenced by the court on Friday, 24 January.

During proceedings, the court heard that on Friday, 15 February 2019, a regional field ranger observed suspicious activity inside the Kruger National Park (KNP) involving the accused individuals.

A field ranger, who passed away before the case was finalised in court, was seen transporting two passengers in his vehicle and meeting with another individual, later identified as Selahle. The regional ranger immediately called for backup.

Two vehicles, a VW Polo and a Hyundai, were intercepted on the road between Skukuza and the Kruger Gate.

Upon searching the Hyundai, one hunting rifle with ammunition, one rhino horn, two knives and some clothing items were discovered.

The four suspects were immediately arrested and charged accordingly. The two vehicles were also confiscated by the police.

During their court appearance, the four were granted bail at the Bushbuckridge District Court. As proceedings of the case continued at the Skukuza Regional Court, the implicated field ranger passed away, leaving behind the other three suspects to face the music.

After a lengthy legal process, Khosa and Maluleke were convicted and sentenced as follows:

- On Count 1: Trespassing in a national park. The two were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 2: Contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The two accused persons were not found guilty.

- On Count 3: Possession of an unlicensed firearm. The two were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 4: Possession of a firearm with the intention to commit crime. The two were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 5: Possession of a prohibited firearm (serial number obliterated). The two were sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 6: Conspiracy to commit crime. The two were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 7: Illegal hunting of rhinoceros. The two were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 8: Possession of unlicensed ammunition. The two were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

- On Count 9: Possession of a dangerous weapon. The two were sentenced to one year imprisonment.

The court ordered that the sentence on Count 3, 4, 8, and 9 run concurrently with Count 5.

The effective sentence for the two accused persons will be 22 years’ behind bars.

On the other hand, Selahle was sentenced to four years’ in imprisonment for conspiracy to commit crime.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General,  Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the collaboration between various stakeholders, which led to the successful conviction of the poachers.

"We are encouraged by the sentences handed down to these poachers. We hope that the sentences will serve as a deterrent to others, who might consider emulating the actions of the accused persons," said the General. – SAnews.gov.za

Police rescue kidnapped businessmen

Police rescue kidnapped businessmen

Police have in the past week rescued two kidnapped businessmen, arrested seven kidnappers and seized firearms, cell phones and vehicles used in the commission of the crimes.

On Saturday, a Chinese businessman was hijacked and kidnapped in Springs, Ekurhuleni.

Within 24 hours, a multi-disciplinary team operationalised intelligence, which led them to the location of the kidnappers.

The team intercepted the kidnappers' vehicle, an Audi A3, at an intersection in Lenasia and arrested two suspects on Sunday.

The team then proceeded to an address in Meriting, where they arrested one more kidnapper and rescued the businessman.

In an unrelated incident, on 1 December 2024, another businessman was hijacked and kidnapped in Wierdabrug, Tshwane.

The victim's vehicle was later recovered in the area of Heuweloord.

Intelligence led a multi-disciplinary team to recover the kidnappers' vehicle, a Jeep, which was left abandoned in a garage in Nellmapius, Tshwane.

The team followed up on a lead, which led them to an address in Mamelodi, where they arrested four suspects and rescued two kidnapped victims. Firearms, cell phones, a Jeep SRT8 and a Hyundai Getz were seized.

Investigations in both these cases are still ongoing.

"These operations would not have been successful without the assistance of other law enforcement agencies including private security," said the South African Police Service in a statement. – SAnews.gov.za

Suspects in AKA murder case to appear in court

Suspects in AKA murder case to appear in court

The six suspects arrested in the murder case of musician Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known as AKA, and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane are due to appear in court on Thursday.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday evening. They face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, among others.

The announcement was made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, at the SA Police Service provincial headquarters in Durban.

The briefing was also attended by the police top brass, including Police Minister Bheki Cele and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

Mkhwanazi said Forbes was the main target of the shooting, and not Motsoane, who was "at the wrong place at the wrong time".

“The six suspects have played different roles during the operation. We have the coordinator, who is the master of everything. We have two shooters that we all saw on social media. We have two spotters. One of the spotters was inside the restaurant observing Mr Forbes and his friends, as well as the organiser of firearms and vehicles used as getaways,” Mkhwanazi said.

Mkhwanazi said the spotter initially followed Forbes from the airport to the hotel and to the restaurant where he was fatally shot.

Forbes was gunned down in Durban’s Florida Road on 10 February 2023 as he was leaving the Wish restaurant. Motsoane was also murdered.

According to Mkhwanazi, some of the cars used at the time of the murder were rented.

On 22 April 2023, the first suspect was arrested in Belhar, Cape Town. He was the alleged organiser who hired vehicles and guns. He was also in police custody for several unrelated murders.

On 24 October 2023, the second suspect, who was an alleged spotter, was arrested. He was linked to another unrelated murder in the Berea area.

Mkhwanazi said the suspects were linked to the AKA murder through four vehicles that were used in the planning, spotting and getaway, including a Mercedes Benz, BMW, Hyundai i10 and VW Polo.

Two of the vehicles had been rented and have since been returned to their owner, who has furnished the police with a statement. – SAnews.gov.za
