Ekurhuleni customers warned against disconnections scam
The City of Ekurhuleni has warned ratepayers about scammers contacting them demanding money to stop “scheduled disconnections” because their municipal accounts are in arrears.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the scammers send customers a WhatsApp message requesting a payment be made through eWallet services in order to block the supposedly pending cut off of electricity.
“It is important that you are warned as our trusted clients and business associates that this is a scam, and the city distances itself from this illicit practice. The city is currently investigating the origins of the scam and those behind it so that we can put an end to it,” Dlamini said.
The city has urged anyone with more information on the scam to share the information with the city via the call centre, walk-in centres, or My COE app.
Dlamini also urged the city’s customers to take note of the following information to avoid becoming victims of the scamsters:
• The city does not make phone calls to clients pertaining to service disconnection;
• Clients will always receive a Pre-Termination notice at least 14 days after their payment due date has lapsed;
• Should clients fail to make payment by the set date, the City’s employees with Ekurhuleni identification cards travelling in marked Ekurhuleni vehicles will do the rounds to disconnect conventional electricity users and live a disconnection notice with an amount payable for reconnection; and
• Prepaid users will simply have their meters blocked.
“Contractors will not at any point come to a client’s house to discuss any disconnection issues, they simply terminate the service from outside the property. Should this irregular practice happen, the customer is requested to report the incident to the municipality,” Dlamini said. – SAnews.gov.za

Municipalities sign up for Eskom debt relief programme
At least 70 municipalities have applied for and been approved for the Eskom debt relief programme introduced by National Treasury last year.
The debt relief programme is aimed at assisting ailing municipalities to pay off their bulk electricity supply debt to the power utility.
This was revealed in the 2024 Budget Review drafted by National Treasury.
“By December 2023, 72 applications had been submitted, totalling R56.7 billion or 96.9 % of total municipal debt owed to Eskom at end‐March 2023. [Some] 70 applications totalling R55.2 billion had been approved as of January 2024, said Treasury.
Once municipalities are admitted into the programme, strict conditions set by Treasury have to be followed in order for the debt to be written off over a three-year period.
“These conditions include enforcing strict credit controls, paying their monthly electricity accounts and enhancing revenue collection,” Treasury said on Wednesday.
Smart meter conditional grant
In the Budget Speech tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godogwana, Treasury announced that a new conditional grant will be introduced to increase the rollout of prepaid smart meters.
“A new conditional grant will be created to fund the rollout of smart prepaid meters, initially in municipalities that have been approved for Eskom debt relief. The National Treasury will distribute this grant.
“A total of R2 billion has been allocated for the grant, made up of R500 million in 2024/25, R650 million in 2025/26 and R800 million in 2026/27,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom to rollout prepaid metres throughout Limpopo
State power utility Eskom is expected to embark on a province-wide prepaid meter installation drive in Limpopo, as part of its meter maintenance programme.
“Eskom Limpopo is excited to announce a significant advancement in our ongoing commitment to providing reliable electricity services to the residents of the Limpopo province. As part of electricity meter maintenance, Eskom Limpopo will be introducing prepaid smart meters as an ongoing initiative in phases across the province,” the power utility said.
Eskom warned that customers in the area may experience some power supply interruptions during this time.
“Eskom Limpopo acknowledges the inconvenience this may cause and wants to assure the community that every effort will be made to minimize the duration of the interruption. Eskom believes that by working together, we can create a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the community during this transitional period. The safety and well-being of our community and customers are paramount, and we urge all customers to treat all electrical connections as live during this period,” Eskom said.
Meanwhile, the power utility has announced on social media X that Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from today (Monday) until further notice. – SAnews.gov.za
