Nornickel Presents Palladium Technology Development Strategy for the PGM Industry in South Africa

Location: Business
Nornickel’s Palladium Centre

Nornickel (https://NorNickel.com) has unveiled its strategy for the development of palladium-based technologies at the PGMs Industry Day, an international conference held in South Africa. The company's experts shared insights into new technological developments that have the potential to redefine the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) extracted on the African continent, particularly in the fields of energy, electronics, and green technology.

The presentation attracted considerable interest from conference participants. Industry representatives noted the practical relevance of Nornickel's innovations for the market, as well as the significant potential of palladium in emerging high-tech applications.

Nornickel is the world's largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel, and one of the leading global suppliers of platinum, copper, cobalt, and other precious and base metals. The company's Palladium Centre focuses on the development and implementation of innovative palladium-based solutions aimed at enhancing industrial efficiency.

Palladium is the most extracted metal among the PGMs and benefits from a geographically diversified supply chain. Russia and South Africa, the two major producing regions, ensure stable global supply.

From a chemical perspective, PGMs complement each other in many applications. Nornickel's research shows that palladium alloys with other PGMs frequently outperform individual metals in terms of efficiency and durability.

Nornickel's approach to palladium innovation is closely aligned with key global megatrends: the energy transition, sustainable development, and digitalisation. Promising application areas include solar and hydrogen energy, biofuels, and next-generation electronics, where palladium can help reduce the cost of conductive components, hard drives, and OLED displays. In existing markets, the company is focused on improving performance and economics for end users.

Nornickel is actively building a global partnership network to co-develop and commercialise palladium-based solutions. The company is committed to long-term collaboration with scientists, manufacturers, and end users to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies and products.

"Our goal is to become a technological partner for producers of PGM-based products. We focus on identifying applications where palladium delivers a strong competitive edge, bringing together leading scientific teams to develop prototypes, conducting large-scale industrial trials, optimising the product, and transferring the technology to manufacturers. This approach allows us to create more efficient materials and open up new markets for palladium applications," said Dmitry Izotov, CEO of Nornickel's Palladium Centre.

Since its launch, the Centre has built a portfolio of 25 products. By 2030, the portfolio is expected to exceed 100 projects, generating an additional annual demand of 40–50 tonnes of palladium.

President engages with various technologies at the CSIR

Location: News

President engages with various technologies at the CSIR

President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged with various researchers and technologies on his visit to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) earlier this week.

The President was hosted by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande when he toured several facilities at the CSIR on Tuesday.

Among the technologies the President interacted with, was the Oceans and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS), a sophisticated digital platform developed by the CSIR.

It enables South Africa to monitor, protect, and sustainably manage its extensive coastal and oceanic zones through real-time, data-driven insights.

The initiative is led by Dr Lulama Wakaba, Executive Cluster Manager of the Next-Gen Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The initiative is a collaboration between the CSIR, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the South African Environmental Observation Network, and the South African Weather Service.

“Many people don’t realise this, but South Africa’s exclusive economic zone, our marine territory, is larger than our land mass. That gives us an extraordinary opportunity in the blue economy, which holds immense potential for GDP [gross domestic product] growth, job creation, and sustainable development,” Wakaba explained.

According to the CSIR, OCIMS is not just a data repository, but also an integrated, scalable system that forms the backbone of multiple research projects used by the state to manage and safeguard marine environments.

These range from coastal erosion monitoring and maritime traffic control, to harmful algal bloom forecasting, oil spill detection, and marine spatial planning.

By using satellite data, sensor networks, and intelligent analytics, the system ensures that South Africa’s coastal resources are preserved and fully utilised for economic benefits.

“What we’re showcasing is a living example of applied science. This system translates complex marine data into actionable insights that policymakers and environmental authorities can use to make informed decisions. It’s about turning scientific research into national impact,” Wakaba explained.

The importance of OCIMS is amplified by South Africa’s strategic position at the meeting point of two oceans, with more than 3 000 km of coastline.

The country’s location, combined with the rising threats of climate change and unsustainable exploitation, make the need for intelligent ocean governance urgent.

“For us, the real breakthrough lies in unlocking the power of science and innovation to support the state's capacity to manage this frontier responsibly,” he said.

“From supporting marine biodiversity to bolstering economic development, OCIMS is a cornerstone in building resilient, knowledge-based ocean governance.”

The CSIR said having President Ramaphosa visit the exhibition was both a validation and a celebration of the platform’s significance.

“What we hope to communicate is the strategic power we can unlock when we take up the mantle of what the CSIR stands for, applying cutting-edge science and technology to our national priorities. In this instance, it’s the blue economy, a massive frontier that, if fully harnessed, can transform our country’s economic trajectory.”

The CSIR’s work on OCIMS also supports international obligations, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, climate resilience efforts, and commitments under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It also provides South African citizens and coastal communities with tools to better understand and protect the natural wealth that surrounds them.

“Our oceans are not just scenic landscapes; they are vital economic assets and ecosystems,” he said.

“OCIMS is about equipping our country with the means to both care for and benefit from those assets responsibly and sustainably.”

With this bold initiative, the CSIR  said OCIMS stands as a beacon of what is possible when innovation meets vision and when digital infrastructure is aligned with national imperatives.

During  his visit, the President hailed the CSIR as a “South African success story” as the institution marks 80 years since its establishment.

Government empowers spaza shops

Location: News

Government empowers spaza shops

With the launch of the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF), government is ready to assist entrepreneurs who want to establish startups, expand their businesses, and gain essential business skills to improve the performance of their enterprises.

This is according to the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni.

With the recent drive to have spaza shops registered, government has received 87 407 applications and of these, a total 53% is from South African-owned spaza shops.

“Our commitment with this fund is to support those who heeded the President’s call to register their spaza shops. As the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), we can help you when you have an idea and want to start a business.

“We have incubators that help new and startup businesses. We can help you from being an informal trader to a formal trader, to start a spaza shop and to own a wholesale or an entire distribution channel. We will be working with you to help you to turn things around,” said Ndabeni.

The support fund was launched on Tuesday in Soweto to support South African-owned township community convenience shops, including spaza shops, to increase their participation in the townships and rural areas retail trade sector.

READ | Government launches R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund

Jointly administered by the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (SEFDA), the fund provides critical financial and non-financial support to township businesses, including community convenience stores and spaza shops.

The fund provides various types of support, including the initial purchase of stock via delivery channel partners, upgrading of building infrastructure, systems, refrigeration, shelving and security, as well as training programmes, which includes point of sale devices, business skills, digital literacy, credit health, food safety and business compliance.

“The fund will address economy of scale disadvantages by linking spaza shops to buying groups for aggregation and bulk purchasing; building business capacity through training and support to improve shop operations; and enhancing market competitiveness to help spaza shops compete with larger retailers," the Minister said.

The fund will be rolled out nationally to impact spaza shops across all major townships, as well as rural areas.

The Minister said government endeavours to work with entrepreneurs to localise supply chain opportunities for township and rural enterprises.

This will ensure that spaza shops do not procure imported products or simply use the platforms of large companies.

“To achieve this, we will utilise other instruments like the Small Enterprise Manufacturing Support Programme, Township and Rural Entrepreneurship Programmes (TREP), the Informal and Micro Enterprise Development Programme (IMEDP), Asset Assist, and our Shared Economic Infrastructure Facility.

“These programmes in turn have the potential to attract municipalities, the private sector, business and informal trader associations, and other stakeholders to work together in contributing their facilities, expertise and resources in support of new localised supply chains and distribution networks for spaza shops.

“Logistics management partners will offer logistics management services, including warehousing and delivery solutions. They will ensure that products are stored safely and delivered efficiently, reducing transportation costs, and improving the overall supply chain efficiency for spaza shops,” the Minister said.

DSBD Connect

The department has recruited 52 Business Regulation Officers across all districts and metros to support business registration using the DSBD Connect system.

DSBD Connect is a platform which will be used to collaborate or put together small business to collaborate and/or work together on a particular project.

This can be businesses within the same industries or different industries but need each other for specific skills or qualifications.

The platform will put together small businesses within the same geographical area, interests, and skills.

“Despite their importance, spaza shops face several challenges, including access to capital, security concerns, and competition from formal retailers, like larger retail stores and supermarkets which are encroaching on their markets.

"South African-owned spaza shops also face intense competition from foreign-operated spaza shops, who use more organised supply chains to gain competitiveness.

“Therefore, I want to encourage you to collaborate and establish cooperatives so that you can leverage resources, knowledge, and work together on projects, sharing best practices,” Ndabeni said.

Germany Sets Sights on Africa’s Energy Future With Major Investment Pledge

Location: News

African Energy Chamber

Germany is eyeing expanded investments in Africa's energy sector, having pledged €4 billion for green energy projects by 2030 and advancing hydrogen and gas partnerships through the European Union's (EU) Global Gateway initiative. These investments aim to enhance conditions for private sector involvement and infrastructure development, underscoring Germany's commitment to sustainable development and economic growth across the continent.

In South Africa, Germany committed R5.2 billion last December to support the country's energy transition and deepen bilateral cooperation. This funding is directed towards facilitating South Africa's shift from coal to renewable energy sources, addressing both environmental concerns and energy security. Earlier this month, the EU also announced a €4.7 billion investment in South Africa to support green energy initiatives and vaccine production, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable development in the region.

Further strengthening these efforts, Germany and the African Development Bank announced joint initiatives last month to accelerate energy access and private sector growth across Africa. This partnership includes support for the Mission 300 initiative, which aims to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030, and expanded financing for youth entrepreneurship programs.

Meanwhile, German companies are optimistic about their prospects in South Africa, signaling growing confidence in the country's economic stability, expanding trade opportunities and the potential for long-term partnerships in energy and industrial sectors. A recent survey by KPMG Germany and the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry revealed that 64% of German companies expect rising revenues in South Africa, with 44% planning to invest in the country within the next three years.

Germany has already been active in Africa's green hydrogen sector, recognizing the continent's vast potential for renewable energy production. In Namibia, German investors have partnered on the $10 billion Hyphen Green Hydrogen Project, aiming to harness the country's abundant solar and wind resources to produce green ammonia for global export. Additionally, Germany mobilized €150 billion through the Global Gateway initiative earlier this year to enhance its energy engagement in Africa, with green hydrogen as a key focus. West African countries alone have the potential to produce up to 165,000 TWh of green hydrogen annually – far exceeding Germany's projected demand for 2030.

Beyond renewable initiatives, Germany remains open to cooperating with African countries on natural gas and blue hydrogen production. This approach reflects Germany's updated Africa policy guidelines, which emphasize the importance of African energy resources – including renewable electricity, green hydrogen and, under specific conditions, natural gas – for a successful energy transition in both Africa and Europe.

"Germany's growing investment in Africa's energy sector signals a transformative shift toward sustainable development and economic growth. With a clear focus on green hydrogen, renewables and responsible fossil fuel cooperation, the country is positioning itself as a key partner in Africa's energy future. African Energy Week 2025 will serve as a vital platform to advance these partnerships, unlocking new opportunities and accelerating Africa's energy transition,” said Tomás Gerbasio, Vice President of Commercial and Strategic Engagement at the African Energy Chamber.

The upcoming African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies conference presents a strategic platform for German investors to explore and engage with energy opportunities across the continent. AEW 2025 aims to drive forward the momentum established in previous years, offering a dynamic space for leaders, policymakers and stakeholders to address regional and global energy challenges while advancing Africa's position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

CSIR critical for innovative solutions to resolve challenges - President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as a “South African success story” as the institution marks 80 years since its establishment.

The President was delivering remarks at the institution’s headquarters following a tour of the facility on Tuesday afternoon.

“Over many decades, the CSIR has been [at the forefront]… of developing groundbreaking technologies and solutions that have profoundly shaped our country’s scientific and industrial progress.

“With the advent of democracy in 1994, the CSIR embarked on a trajectory of aligning itself with the values of our Constitution. The CSIR is a true treasure for our nation,” he said.

The President told the gathering that as the country – and the world – dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, the CSIR stepped in to assist the country in fighting the virus.

During the pandemic, CSIR engineers produced some 18 000 ventilators, which were vital for the care of patients across the country.

It also developed a platform to track the impact of the pandemic, which assisted government to direct its response.

“At a moment of great crisis and danger, it was Minister [Blade] Nzimande who said let’s go to the CSIR, and indeed, we came rushing because you had already developed certain capabilities to help us deal with the crisis not only our country was facing.

“We came in a rush, and you distinguished yourselves as a truly capable facility and centre, and today you have displayed to me and us precisely what you true capabilities are. They range from... having the capability to develop missiles and aeroplanes, and cyber security systems,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President called on government to make more use of the CSIR’s capabilities to deliver on South Africa’s developmental mandate.

“In government, we don’t use… the CSIR enough. You are a government owned entity, and you do a great deal of work for others in other countries. We have used you, and you have demonstrated that you are more than capable.

“We are going to have a special Cabinet session where [the CSIR] comes and outlines... precisely what you do and also give us insights on how we can use you. I can’t think of a better way of State capability [building] other than through science, technology and innovation,” he said.

The President further emphasised the institution’s critical role in building State capacity.

“We are one of those countries where, at the advent of democracy, we deindustrialised. The manufacturing base in our country started receding and it is this that we now need to build back.

“[The CSIR] being the centre for industrial research, and who are so adept in a number of areas, can help us to address the challenges in relation to job creation, reducing poverty and also ensuring that there is inclusive growth,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

Mining represents one of the most energy-intensive industries globally. As African nations ramp up mineral extraction to drive economic growth, mining projects and stakeholders are increasingly investing in energy infrastructure to sustain operations and meet rising production targets. Amid efforts to improve grid stability, the upcoming African Mining Week conference will highlight the continent's investment opportunities emerging from the mining-energy nexus.

Northam Bolsters Power Supply for South African Mines

In February 2025, mining firm Northam signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 140 MW of wind power to support its platinum group metals operations in Limpopo. This deal follows an earlier PPA signed in October 2024 for an 80 MW solar power facility to supply the company's Zondereinde mine, aimed at driving South Africa's expansion of its PGMs sector. These agreements are part of Northam's broader strategy to enhance energy security and sustainability while reducing its carbon footprint in alignment with national renewable energy goals.

Richards Bay Minerals Expands PPA Portfolio

Richards Bay Minerals, a subsidiary of mining multinational Rio Tinto, signed its third PPA with Red Rocket in February 2025, securing 230 MW of electricity from Red Rocket's 380 MW Overberg Wind Farm. This agreement increases the company's total contracted renewable energy supply to 500 MW and supports Rio Tinto's commitment to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030. Richards Bay Minerals also taps into energy from the 130 MW Bolobedu solar PV plant and 140 MW Khangela Emoyeni wind farm.

Further Investments in Renewables for Mining

Other mining companies across Africa are driving large-scale energy projects to secure a stable power supply. In South Africa, Ivanhoe Mines completed a 5 MW solar facility in Q1 2025 to support its Platreef PGM mine, while Impala Platinum signed a five-year PPA with Discovery Green to supply wheeled renewable energy to its Impala Refineries operation. Meanwhile, commodities firm Trafigura is developing a 2 GW initiative to power Angolan mines, and First Quantum is set to commission a 430 MW project in Zambia in 2025. Tronox Holdings plans to roll out 400 MW of energy projects in South Africa by 2027 and Chinese mining company CMOC is preparing a 200 MW energy project in the DRC, set for commissioning by 2028.

As these investments unfold, African Mining Week will showcase key milestones in energy security for the sector, highlighting lucrative opportunities within Africa's independent power markets. The event will emphasize the growing demand for stable, sustainable energy solutions as miners continue to invest in energy infrastructure.

Progress made in tackling global challenges

Progress made in tackling global challenges

South Africa’s Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) is making significant progress in tackling global challenges through an inclusive and collaborative approach.

This is according to the country’s G20 Sherpa, Zane Dangor. Sherpas are the personal representatives of the G20 leaders.

“We believe this is important and that the G20 must work with the UN [United Nations] and other multilateral institutions to mitigate these challenges and to find practical solutions for all of us.

“We look forward to constructive engagements from all members of the G20, the invited guests [and] also the international organisations,” he said on Thursday.

Dangor who is also the Director-General for International Relations and Cooperation, chaired the second virtual meeting of the G20 Sherpas in Pretoria on Thursday.

He also stressed the importance of Ubuntu – a philosophy of inclusiveness and solidarity – in addressing global challenges and achieving shared interests across international organisations.

“We must express our appreciation in the way that you embraced the spirit of Ubuntu, the culture that underpins not just South Africa’s culture of inclusiveness, but also Africa’s wider culture. Ubuntu really underpins our commitment and solidarity in addressing our common challenges in achieving shared prosperity,” he said during the opening session of the meeting.

Dangor stressed South Africa’s commitment to multilateralism and shared prosperity, with 15 working groups having already conducted their first meetings and three task force meetings.

Working Groups are made up of representatives from member countries’ Ministries. The G20 working groups cover diverse areas, including development, anti-corruption, culture, education, women’s empowerment, environment, health, tourism, and disaster risk management.

“We hope that as you listen to the reflections of the working group members in your own inputs, you’ll be able to sharpen what you believe we should be taking forward as a collective.”

He also touched on a diplomatic engagement where he told attendees that the Foreign Ministers’ meeting in February this year expressed strong support for South Africa’s themes and priorities, particularly in managing geopolitical issues.

At the meeting in February, G20 foreign ministers threw their weight behind South Africa’s Presidency priorities, which focus on sustainable development and debt sustainability for low-income countries, amongst others.

In addition, he said following Brazil’s model, South Africa’s Presidency aims to develop in-depth discussions on geopolitical matters through ministerial and leadership channels while allowing working groups to focus on technical issues.

Dangor acknowledged the enormous task ahead and the need for support from key members and international organisations.

The Sherpa said the objective of the two-day meeting which will conclude on Friday, is to take stock of what has happened, identify areas for improvement, and address key issues.

CLG Granted CEMAC Tax Accreditation, Reinforcing Position as Regional Legal Partner

Location: Business
CLG

Legal, tax and business advisory conglomerate CLG (www.CLGGlobal.com) - formerly Centurion Law Group – has officially been approved as a Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) tax advisor by the CEMAC Standing Committee on Fiscal and Accounting Harmonization. CLG Tax and Legal will provide its full suite of tax services across all CEMAC member countries, supporting business and transactions across various strategic fields, including oil, gas and mining.

The tax certification not only comes as part of a broader restructuring of CLG's tax and legal services offerings, aimed at positioning the firm to better serve clients throughout the region with integrated solutions, but as the CEMAC region pursues accelerated growth across its strategic economic sectors. Specifically, the region's oil and gas sector is on track for rapid growth, as nations implement ambitious production targets. The Republic of Congo aims to produce 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) by 2027; Gabon targets 220,000 bpd in the short-term; while Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon are scaling-up gas monetization. These targets require significant levels of investment and CLG stands ready to support transactions and broader economic growth.

Given the potential of the CEMAC region's natural and mineral resources, project developers and investors have already begun to expand their presence across the region. In the Republic of Congo, TotalEnergies is investing $600 million in the Moho Nord project; Trident Energy recently acquired stakes in the Nkossa, Nsoko II, Lianzi and Moho-Bilondo fields; while Perenco increased production at the Tchibouela II and Tchendo II fields following a $30 million investment. In Gabon, wildcat drilling is underway on Blocks BC-9 and BCD-10 while Perenco advances the $1 billion Cap Lopez LNG terminal toward a 2026 start. In Equatorial Guinea, the country is preparing to launch an oil and gas licensing round while Cameroon drives a gas-to-industry agenda. Further developments in Chad are underway, highlighting the region's potential as a major producing hub.

Stepping into this picture, CLG's accreditation will serve to further support current and future transactions. Over the past decade, CLG has significantly grown its tax practice, providing comprehensive tax advisory and compliance services to numerous multinational companies operating across Africa. This sustained growth reflects CLG's commitment to meeting the complex tax needs of investors and businesses on the continent, from corporate tax planning and regulatory compliance to cross-border taxation strategies.

“By bolstering our tax practice in the CEMAC region, CLG continues to establish itself as a one-stop-shop for investors in the region and across the continent. The CEMAC accreditation aligns with our strategy to support impactful transactions in Africa and we look forward to strengthening our presence across the continent,” stated Zion Adeoye, CEO and Managing Partner of CLG.

CLG already has a strong presence in Africa, with offices in South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius, Ghana, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia and South Sudan. The company caters to a diverse portfolio of multinational companies operating globally, delivering bespoke solutions tailored to address the unique challenges and complexities faced by clients in different industries. CLG's expertise covers energy, infrastructure, mining, agriculture and ESG, to name a few. For the CEMAC region, CLG's extensive network and growing expertise positions the firm as strategic partner for regional and global firms. As companies expand their presence across the region, CLG's agile, integrated approach - underpinned by its local roots and depth of experience - demonstrates the rising prominence of African advisory firms on the global stage. The CEMAC tax certification not only expands CLG's regional service coverage but also solidifies its reputation as a trusted partner for businesses navigating Central Africa's evolving tax landscape.

“CLG's deep understanding of its clients' businesses, collaborative approach with local authorities, multinational orientation and highly experienced local teams are some of the factors that set our tax practice apart in the region,” stated Daoudou Mohammed, CLG Tax and Legal Director.

George welcomes announcement on private sector-powered grid expansion initiative

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Dr Dion George, has commended the announcement that government will pursue private investment for the construction of new transmission lines.

Electricity and Energy Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, on Tuesday announced that a pilot programme, the Independent Transmission Programme (ITP) will pave the way for the construction of 1 164 kilometers of new transmission lines.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said Ramokgopa's statement aligns with the DFFE's vision, by encouraging private sector involvement, which aims to address the transmission constraints that have hindered the integration of solar and wind energy, especially in the Cape province.

“This significant step forward aligns seamlessly with the vision Minister George articulated earlier this week in his landmark decision on Eskom’s emissions framework, marking a triumph for South Africa’s sustainable energy future,” the department said in a statement on Wednesday.

On Monday, George underscored the urgent need for innovative infrastructure solutions to balance energy security with environmental responsibility, subtly pointing to the expansion of transmission capacity as a key enabler for renewable energy growth.

The Minister said Ramokgopa’s announcement is a "resounding victory for the sustainable energy path we are forging."

“My decision on Eskom’s emissions earlier this week laid the groundwork for a modernised energy system that respects our climate commitments. Minister Ramokgopa’s bold move to unlock private investment in transmission lines is exactly what I alluded to – a practical, impactful step to harness our renewable potential and secure a cleaner future for all South Africans.”

George also commended the cross-governmental collaboration, noting that the R440 billion Transmission Development Plan, now supported by private funding, will ease the burden on Eskom and the national budget, while accelerating the transition to renewable energy.

He reaffirmed his dedication to partnering with Ramokgopa to ensure that environmental standards remain integral to this transformative infrastructure expansion.

“This initiative is about more than just power lines – it’s about powering opportunity. We are opening the door to investment, job creation, and South Africa’s emergence as a green economy leader,” George said

The procurement regulations are set to be released on Thursday, 3 April 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

Conference places the spotlight on ocean sustainability

Location: News

Conference places the spotlight on ocean sustainability

As the current holder of the G20 Presidency, South Africa is leading global efforts for ocean sustainability, particularly focusing on advancing sustainable ocean initiatives in Africa.

The country is hosting the 14th International Conference on Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography (ICSHMO), which is currently underway in Cape Town.

This premier scientific gathering, being held in Africa for the first time since 1997, brings together renowned meteorologists, oceanographers, and climate scientists to address the unique atmospheric and oceanic challenges of the southern hemisphere.

The five-day event, which kicked off on Monday, is hosted by the National Research Foundation (NRF) through the South African Environmental Observation Network, with support from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI).

The conference shows South Africa’s growing influence in global climate science.

Opening the conference, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, emphasised the urgent need for scientific collaboration to combat the escalating threats of climate change.

“The world is experiencing intensified heatwaves, prolonged droughts, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events that disrupt economies, displace communities, and strain infrastructure,” the department said.

South Africa has witnessed the devastating impact of climate change in repeated floods and recurring droughts.
These events highlight the pressing need for enhanced climate prediction, risk management, and adaptation strategies, all key topics at ICSHMO 2025.

The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of turning scientific knowledge into tangible, actionable solutions.
Through the NRF, the country continues to support cutting-edge research in marine and coastal science, weather forecasting, and climate adaptation, to inform global policy and action.

Gina welcomed the integration of ICSHMO with the Ocean20 initiative, a flagship programme introduced under Brazil’s G20 Presidency, which is designed to promote sustainable ocean governance, and reiterated South Africa’s commitment to leveraging science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development.

The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of equitable access to artificial intelligence, big data and remote sensing technologies, which were transforming climate science, enabling more accurate forecasting, early warning systems, and disaster preparedness.

Collaboration and knowledge-sharing were key to building a more stable and resilient global future, especially for nations that were most vulnerable to climate change.

A group of learners from Luhlaza and Usasazo high schools in Khayelitsha attended the conference and had a special interaction with Gina on the benefits of science for society.

During the opening session, Kenya’s representative for the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Patricia Nying’uro, highlighted the critical role of indigenous knowledge in promoting sustainability. She stated that the extensive knowledge accumulated by indigenous communities over centuries should be utilized to enhance climate action efforts.

NRF CEO, Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo, said the conference would provide a vital platform for advancing scientific collaboration, sharing cutting-edge research, and addressing the pressing challenges of climate variability and change in the southern hemisphere.

“The insights and discussions over the next few days will undoubtedly contribute to shaping policies and strategies that enhance climate resilience in our region and beyond,” he stated. – SAnews.gov.za

Government allocates R1.44 billion for natural disaster recovery efforts – Hlabisa

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has announced a significant financial commitment of R1.44 billion from the R11 billion requested to assist municipalities impacted by recent natural disasters.

The funds, dispersed between February and March 2025, aim to address infrastructure damage caused by floods, heat waves, and severe weather events across multiple provinces.

The grant allocation covers 60 municipalities and provincial sector departments across five provinces, including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Free State, targeting sectors such as infrastructure repair, education, health and agriculture.

Meanwhile, the Minister announced that the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has officially classified recent weather events as a national disaster, enabling prompt intervention and support for affected communities.

“As we face the growing challenges posed by natural hazards such as floods, heat waves, fires and droughts, it is crucial to recognise the substantial threats these events pose to our communities, to our infrastructure, as well as to our economy.

“While climate change has exacerbated some of these risks, we also confront challenges that stem from unsustainable practices and inadequate planning,” the Minister said on Monday at a media briefing.

He believed that acknowledging these factors allowed government to pursue proactive measures and solutions that can lessen future risks.

The country has been experiencing significant weather events, including heavy rains, floods, thunderstorms and strong winds since the beginning of 2025.

The Minister is of the view that this calls for urgent collaborative action and resilience-building within communities on behalf of the government and South Africans.

Hlabisa also took the time to offer his condolences to the families and loved ones of the 40 people who have lost their lives since the December holidays.

“We continue to commit our efforts to build resilience and reduce the risk of future disasters so that no more lives are needlessly lost.”

He assured citizens that the State was now turning its attention to recovery and improving preparedness for future challenges by learning through developing stronger systems and strategies that will safeguard citizens and enhance collective resilience.

Hlabisa emphasised the importance of accountability, warning that any mismanagement or diversion of funds will face strict consequences.

“I'm speaking about the funds amounting to R1.44 billion already in the accounts of our municipalities, but what we notice in some of our municipalities is that the poor infrastructure, planning and implementation become a serious factor.

“The poor workmanship is always noted once the money has been spent, diversion from the original allocation. When money was allocated for a bridge, a municipality decides to use the money for salaries, or when the money was allocated for 3 kilometres, the municipality decided to spend the money on 1 kilometre,” he explained.

However, he said government will do whatever it takes to ensure that they follow these monies that have been allocated and have given municipalities up until August this year to use the allocated funds.

“The allocation of disaster response and recovery grants is a testament to our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our communities and rebuilding our nation as we navigate these challenging times. We must work together, leveraging our collective strengths and resources to ensure a resilient and prosperous future for all people of South Africa,” he concluded. – SAnews.gov.za
