Access Bank PLC (www.AccessBankPLC.com) successfully hosted the inaugural Africa Trade Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and trade experts to drive solutions for accelerating intra-African trade and unlocking the continent's economic potential. The conference tackled critical challenges, including limited access to capital, market information gaps, trust deficits between trading partners, and the urgent need for modernised trade infrastructure.
Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank, delivered the opening remarks, setting the tone for discussions by highlighting the critical barriers hindering trade across Africa. He emphasised the urgent need for financial sector collaboration to facilitate seamless access to capital and foster a business environment where African enterprises can scale and compete globally.
“We must invest in the initiatives that ensure that we can bring businesses together, forge trust, and create the connections necessary for trade. In doing so, we must stamp out the narrative that 'Made in Africa' is inferior to any product made anywhere else in the world. We must buy Africa, be proud to wear Africa, and invest in Africa because that is what the continent needs to leap forward into the next generation,” Ogbonna stated.
With Africa's population projected to surge to 2.5 billion by 2050 from 1.2 billion, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) stands as the most significant free trade initiative since the formation of the World Trade Organisation. By fostering economic integration, AfCFTA has the potential to reshape trade dynamics across the continent, creating a unified market that enhances industrialisation, boosts employment, and strengthens Africa's global competitiveness. Recognising this transformative opportunity, H.E. Wamkele K. Mene, Secretary-General of AfCFTA, emphasised the urgency of fully implementing the agreement to unlock its immense benefits.
"The AfCFTA is not just a trade agreement; it is an instrument for Africa's industrialisation and economic sovereignty. It is a tool that will enable us to break down historic trade barriers and build an Africa that is self-sufficient, competitive, and prosperous. But for this to happen, we must commit to operationalising the agreement fully, ensuring that businesses, particularly SMEs and women-led enterprises, have access to the information, capital, and platforms they need to thrive,” Mene stated.
Also, Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Afreximbank, emphasised the importance of financing mechanisms that support African businesses in their expansion across borders. She reaffirmed Afreximbank's commitment to championing trade finance solutions and infrastructure investments that will unlock Africa's trade potential.
“At Afreximbank, we understand that trade finance is the lifeblood of economic development. Without it, businesses cannot scale, industries cannot innovate, and Africa cannot fully realise its trade potential. This is why we have developed instruments such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) to facilitate seamless transactions across borders, reducing reliance on foreign currencies and strengthening intra-African trade,” Awani remarked.
The conference featured an insightful testimonial from Nathalie Louat, Global Director at the IFC/World Bank Group, who pointed out the pivotal role of trade finance in enabling cross-border transactions and supporting financial inclusion. She underscored the long-standing partnership between IFC and Access Bank in fostering Africa's economic resilience.
Several high-level panel discussions explored strategies to overcome trade barriers and enhance market access through innovative solutions. Experts from leading institutions, including Deutsche Bank, Traydstream, OWP Partners, Fiducia International, and more, examined how infrastructure improvements, digital solutions, and policy harmonisation could drive economic growth and boost intra-African trade.
Dr. Marc Auboin from the World Trade Organization (WTO) shared key insights on how digital transformation is reshaping Africa's supply chain landscape, creating efficiency and unlocking new global market opportunities. Tanya Dos Santos-Ford from GIBS Business School also led a session on sustainable trade practices, emphasising the need for environmentally responsible economic growth strategies.
The event culminated in an awards ceremony recognising outstanding contributions to intra-African trade and economic transformation. Tradepass Commodities Limited (Ghana), Chemaf International FZE (DR Congo), and Harvest Group of Companies (Zambia) were honoured for their impact on SMEs and women-led trade enterprises. Bulkstream Limited (Kenya) and Electricidade de Moçambique (Mozambique) received awards for advancing intra-African trade, while Tennant Metals South Africa Pty Ltd was recognised as an Emerging Leader in Trade.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) was awarded the Climate Finance Leadership Award, while Afreximbank received the Champion of Intra-African Trade Award. The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) were celebrated for their roles in economic transformation and infrastructure finance, respectively. The prestigious African Icon Award was presented to IHS Group, Dangote Industries Limited, and MTN Group Limited for their significant contributions to Africa's economic progress.
As the conference ended, Seyi Kumapayi, Executive Director, African Subsidiaries at Access Bank, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to supporting trade finance, fostering regional integration, and championing policies that create an enabling environment for businesses across Africa.

Social grants set to increase in April
All social grants, barring the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, are expected to increase from April this year.
Delivering the 2025 Budget Speech in Parliament on Wednesday, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the number of social grant beneficiaries – excluding those receiving the SRD grant – is expected to rise to some 19 million in 2025/26 and 19.3 million in 2027/28 due to a growing population of older persons.
Godongwana said for 2025/26, social grants will be allocated some RR284.7 billion.
“As announced by the President in the State of the Nation Address, the SRD will be used as a basis for the introduction of a sustainable form of income support for unemployed people.
“The future form and nature of the SRD will be informed by the outcome of the review of active labour market programmes. This is expected to be completed by September 2025.
“The truth is that ours is one of the most comprehensive social safety nets among emerging economies. This reflects our commitment to addressing poverty and inequality, while keeping our spending sustainable,” he said.
The grant increases this year include:
In the Budget Review, National Treasury said the budget for social grants is “increased by R8.2 billion over the medium term to account for higher costs of living”.
“An amount of R35.2 billion is allocated to extend the payment at the current [SRD] R370 per month per beneficiary, including administration costs,” the department said.
The Department of Social Development, which administers social grants, has been allocated R422.3 billion in 2025/26, which is expected to increase to R452.7 billion in 2027/28, at an average annual growth rate of 4.5%.
“This funding supports poverty reduction through social grants, the provision of risk benefits through social insurance and the delivery of welfare services, development initiatives, empowerment programmes, gender equality initiatives and advocacy for children, women, youth, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
“Social grant spending makes up 81 percent of the allocation for this function. At an average annual growth rate of 5.3 percent, social protection spending increases above inflation over the medium term; however, social grant reform and efficiency savings will be necessary to ensure the sustainability of the social security system.
“[The] sector’s operational budget will be subject to conditions, including the need to improve biometric verification of recipients to achieve savings,” the National Treasury said. – SAnews.gov.za

Economic development initiatives to spur economic growth
Over the next three years, government spending on economic development will be the fastest-growing function at an annual average rate of 8.1%, driven by higher allocations to infrastructure projects.
According to the 2025 National Treasury Budget Review, medium-term spending for economic development will grow from R252.4 billion in 2024/25 to R318.4 billion in 2027/28.
The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development will expedite the finalisation of outstanding land claims, prioritising older claims.
The department has been allocated R11.6 billion over the medium-term to settle about 844 land restitution claims, with R3 billion earmarked to allocate 138 000 hectares of land.
“Over the medium-term, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation will invest R3 billion in the construction of the MeerKAT array and efforts to secure the hosting of part of the Square Kilometre Array.
“Guided by evidence and targeted public policy interventions, R2.9 billion will be invested annually in postgraduate development and research support. Additionally, R3.8 billion will be allocated annually to provide access to cutting-edge research infrastructure,” the Budget Review document said.
To enhance productivity, competitiveness and the green economy, government will spend R18.4 billion over the medium term to support businesses through various incentive programmes under the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
These programmes include the automotive investment scheme, business process outsourcing, film and television production incentives, special economic zones, clothing and textile competitiveness programmes, the industrial park revitalisation programme and industrial development support for electric vehicle production.
“The Department of Small Business Development is allocated R2.1 billion over the medium-term to support about 120 000 competitive small businesses, particularly those owned by women, youth and people with disabilities in marginalised areas, such as townships and rural regions.
“In addition, government has allocated R313.7 million over the medium-term for the establishment of micro, small and medium enterprise hubs to support business expansion,” National Treasury said.
Government will merge the comprehensive agricultural support programme grant and the Ilima/Letsema projects grant into a single grant with the existing consolidated baseline of R7.3 billion over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period.
This merger aims to streamline grant administration, improve resource allocation, and support commercial and subsistence farming.
“To minimise outbreaks of pests and diseases that affect agricultural production, the department will accelerate regulatory compliance and monitoring interventions costing R30.3 million over the medium term.
“The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa is allocated R102 million in 2025/26 for the second phase of the licensing of spectrum through an auction process.
“This is expected to increase investment in networks, improve network quality, contribute to economic growth and lower data costs,” National Treasury said. -SANews.gov.za

After an interview process, the Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has recommended the names of nine people to fill vacancies on the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Board.
Committee Chairperson Ms Liezl van der Merwe said that as the committee finalises the interviews and scoring processes, it is imperative to acknowledge the significant challenges youth unemployment pose to the nation. The NYDA plays a pivotal role in addressing those challenges, she noted.
The Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is dedicated to ensuring that the new Board is composed of individuals who are committed, skilled, passionate, patriotic and representative of South Africa's youth.
Ms van der Merwe gave an overview of the committee's processes leading up to recommending the nine candidates. The committee received 1 412 applications, from which it shortlisted 20 candidates. Public comments reflected overwhelming support for the shortlisted candidates and showed enthusiasm for and hope in all the shortlisted candidates.
Ms van der Merwe said the committee firmly espoused the values and principles of fairness, transparency and accountability throughout the process. It is essential to highlight that all candidates consented to participate in an open process, knowing the implications of their involvement.
Ms van der Merwe announced the top nine candidates and said they were selected based on their qualifications, experience and in line with requirements of Section 9 (4) of the amended NYDA Act. One candidate was rendered ineligible because he did not meet the criteria, as he is over the age of 35.
The candidates selected for recommendation to the President are as follows (in alphabetical order):
1. Kelly Sandra Baloyi
2. Precious Thembisile Mahuwa
3. Wiseman Mfaniseni Mbatha
4. Bonga Siphesihle Makhanya
5. Sibusiso Makhathini
6. Irfaan Mangera
7. Sunshine Minenhle Myende
8. Busisiwe Nandipha Nxumalo
9. Xabiso Nicholas Nyati
The committee unanimously resolved that the nine candidates should be recommended for appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa to serve as Board members in the NYDA for a period of three years.
The report will go to the National Assembly for debate before it is sent to the President, for him to select the candidates to serve on the Board.

Beijing+30: SA reaffirms commitment to women empowerment
South Africa has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to the full implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+30), which commits to ensuring gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.
Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, delivered the Country Statement at the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), currently underway at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In her address on Tuesday, Chikunga emphasised the critical issues outlined in South Africa’s National Review of progress made in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
The country’s statement lays bare South Africa’s commitment to expedite the full realisation of the Beijing+30 agenda.
“From the onset, South Africa reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to the full, effective and accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. We pledge our support and congratulate the commission on the unanimous adoption of the political declaration yesterday.
“We recognise these as transformative blueprints for a future that will be just, equitable, sustainable and collectively prosperous. Moreover, we align ourselves with the statements delivered on behalf of the African Group, the Group of 77 plus China, as well as the Southern African Development Community (SADC),” Chikunga said.
Gender equality and women empowerment, the Minister said, are fundamental constitutional imperatives enshrined in Section 9 of South Africa’s Constitution, with the Bill of Rights embracing a restorative approach to gender equality.
Key achievements
The Minister highlighted some of the country’s achievements in areas such as women representation, judiciary, higher education and social protection.
Women’s representation: South African women now make up 43.5% of the Parliament, a significant increase from 28% in 1994. Women also hold 43% of the Executive positions, compared to only three women in 1994.
Judiciary: As of February 2023, 45% of South Africa's 253 judges are women, up from only two women judges in 1994. Notably, South Africa appointed its first-ever female Chief Justice and Head of the Constitutional Court, the country's highest judicial authority, in 2024.
Higher education: South Africa has surpassed gender parity in higher education, with over 60% of graduates from colleges and universities being women. The country is now prioritising increasing women representation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), as well as in Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies.
Social protection: Over the past three decades, South Africa has built one of the most comprehensive social protection systems in the developing world, providing critical support through social grants that lift millions of women and girls out of poverty.
The Minister further highlighted South Africa’s commitment to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), noting the National Council Act on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which was recently signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa. It underscores South Africa’s whole-of-society effort to prevent, eliminate and respond to violence against all women and girls in public and private spaces, including online and offline.
South Africa has also completed a national GBVF prevalence study to ensure that the current and future interventions are evidence-based on sound scientific evidence.
Through its leadership role in the G20 Ministerial Working Group on the Empowerment of Women, the Minister said South Africa is shining the spotlight on the care economy, promoting financial inclusion through preferential public procurement for women-owned enterprises, and ensuring that women have access to land, productive assets and economic opportunities.
Despite the significant progress made, the Minister acknowledged that much more needs to be done.
“No democratic world or State can claim freedom unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression. Women and girls will be free and this is our commitment,” Chikunga said.

Breaking barriers: Mbali's journey into the building industry
Zandile Mbali had always dreamed of becoming a social worker, but due to financial difficulties, she was forced to put her education on hold, and struggled with uncertainty, unsure of how to move forward.
However, after years of being at home with no prospects, Mbali found a new path, one she never imagined for herself. This after a friend introduced her to the diverse training programmes offered at Xilembeni Project Centre of Excellence, a non-profit organisation (NPO) funded by the Gauteng Department of Social Development.
Today, the 32-year-old from Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, in the eastern part of Gauteng, is proudly studying Building Engineering at Xilembeni.
Mbali had initially hesitated at the thought of joining a male-dominated industry and the idea of lifting bricks, mixing concrete and working on construction sites seemed intimidating.
However, the encouragement of her classmates, mostly men, gave her the confidence to take a leap of faith.
“Women are underrepresented in the construction industry, but my dream is to start my own construction company. Turning back is not in my vocabulary. The men in my class are incredibly supportive, and that has made all the difference,” Mbali said.
Determined to succeed, she started researching the experiences women in construction go through, and she discovered some of the challenges they face, including discrimination, harassment, gender bias, and the struggle to balance work and family life.
However, Mbali also realised that the right work environment and support system could make all the difference.
On her first day at Xilembeni, Mbali was introduced to the basics of digging and setting a foundation, both literally and figuratively. With each passing day, her confidence grows, and she now looks forward to furthering her education and expanding her skills.
She hopes to inspire other young people, especially women, to explore opportunities beyond traditional careers.
“Many learners give up on life when they cannot afford university, not knowing that government offers opportunities like Xilembeni. I want to share this information because too many young people in my community are falling into dangerous lifestyles, such as substance abuse.”
Mbali was also pleasantly surprised by the support she received at Xilembeni, which not only provides training, but also offers transportation and daily meals, alleviating some of the burdens on the students.
With graduation now on the horizon, Mbali stands proudly as a future builder. Her next goal is to establish her own construction company, proving that no dream is too big — even in an industry historically dominated by men.
Her story is one of resilience, courage, and the power of second chances. Through hard work and determination, Mbali is not just learning to build structures; she is laying the foundation for a bright future. – SAnews.gov.za

Summit to boost small enterprise development in KZN
Business leaders, entrepreneurs and government officials in KwaZulu-Natal are currently engaging on critical issues impacting small enterprises across the province.
These role players are gathered at the 2025 Umyezane Summit, Conference and Awards, which is taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).
Addressing the opening of the summit on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasised the pivotal role played by small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in driving economic transformation and creating jobs within the province.
“The growth of SMMEs is central to building a resilient and inclusive economy. Through initiatives like the Umyezane Summit, we aim to empower small businesses, strengthen township and rural economies, and ensure that historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs are given meaningful opportunities to thrive,” Ntuli said.
He highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for entrepreneurs by addressing barriers including crime, access to funding, and market opportunities.
The summit and accompanying awards reflect the provincial government’s vision of fostering a thriving, inclusive economy driven by small enterprises.
Ntuli assured entrepreneurs that KwaZulu-Natal remains committed to policy reforms, financial support, and capacity-building programmes that will position SMMEs as key drivers of economic growth.
EDTEA MEC Musa Zondi noted the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking economic opportunities for SMMEs.
“We must remove red tape, foster innovation and create sustainable pathways for small businesses to succeed in both local and global markets,” Zondi said.
The summit features panel discussions, policy dialogues, and networking sessions, where stakeholders engaged on topics including:
• Crime and business security – Addressing the impact of crime on small businesses and strategies to enhance security.
• Regulatory and policy compliance – Simplifying business registration and licensing processes.
• Revitalising township and rural economies – Exploring innovative approaches to support businesses in historically underserved areas.
• Access to funding and market opportunities – Strengthening financial support mechanisms for SMMEs.
• The Black Industrialists Programme – Accelerating transformation by expanding support for Black-owned enterprises in key sectors.
Recognising excellence in entrepreneurship
During the award ceremony on Monday, Ntuli commended the recipients for their dedication and contribution to economic development, reaffirming government’s ongoing support for the province’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The awards celebrated outstanding entrepreneurs, who have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and business excellence in KwaZulu-Natal, including youth and women-owned businesses, rural enterprises, and emerging industrialists.

As a member of the Organisation since 1994, South Africa believes that the Commonwealth continues to play an important role in a world where there is increasing pushback against the forces promoting multilateralism as well as international solidarity and cooperation. The Organisation, which represents countries from across the development spectrum should use its unique position and membership from around the globe to continue calling for the strengthening of existing multilateral mechanisms and institutions and transform them to suit current global realities. The Commonwealth provides an opportunity to address issues of common interest, including implementation of development goals and the reform of constitutions of global governance, in particular the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the United Nations.
The Commonwealth must remain at the forefront of the struggle for the advancement and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, gender equality and women empowerment.
Only through increased solidarity, will the 56 members of the Commonwealth be able to assist each other to address the challenges we are currently facing. This will ensure that the Commonwealth continues to remain relevant and grow.
On Commonwealth Day, South Africa once again renews its pledge to uphold and serve the values and fellowship of the Commonwealth.

KZN unveils women empowerment initiatives
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has unveiled new initiatives aimed at accelerating gender equality and economic empowerment for women.
Ntuli announced several government interventions on Saturday when he led the province’s International Women’s Day celebrations at KwaMashu Indoor Sports Centre, north of Durban.
Held under the theme, “Accelerate Action: Collectively, We Can Accelerate Action for Gender Equality”, the event highlighted the need for urgent and practical interventions to support women in various sectors.
Ntuli addressed the pressing challenges women face, including gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), economic exclusion, and limited access to resources, while recognising their invaluable contributions to KwaZulu-Natal’s development.
Tackling gender-based violence
The Premier reflected on the disturbing statistics of gender-based violence and femicide in the province, particularly in eThekwini, where 2 252 cases were reported between October and December 2024.
“These figures are a national crisis that demands urgent and collective action,” the Premier said.
To combat this, the Premier announced government interventions, including:
Women advancement fund
Recognising the link between economic vulnerability and gender-based violence, Ntuli also reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to empowering women financially.
He highlighted the R200 million Women Advancement Fund, launched in August 2024, which provides funding for women entrepreneurs to start or expand their businesses, mentorship and skills development programmes to ensure long-term business success, and access to markets and resources, enabling women to fully participate in the province’s economic activities.
The Premier announced that district-wide roadshows will be conducted shortly to assist women in applying for funding and accessing business development support.
Call for collective action
Ntuli urged all sectors of society, including government, business, community leaders and traditional authorities, to unite in the fight for gender equality.
He emphasised that gender justice is not just a women's issue, but a societal responsibility.
“We must commit to accelerating action and move beyond words and implement real, measurable interventions that bring lasting change. Women are the backbone of our communities, and we must ensure they live in a world where they are safe, empowered, and given equal opportunities,” the Premier said.
The International Women’s Day celebrations concluded with stories of resilience and success from women across various industries, inspiring others to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the provincial government. – SAnews.gov.za

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has arrived at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to present South Africa’s report on the country’s progress in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action (Beijing+30).
Chikunga is leading South Africa’s delegation to the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), which takes place from 10 to 21 March 2025.
The South African Beijing+30 report provides a comprehensive overview of the progress made in advancing gender equality from 2019 to 2024. It draws on data, statistics, and key trends to assess achievements and challenges in this area.
The report highlights the 12 critical areas of concern outlined in the Beijing Platform for Action, including women and poverty, education and training, women’s health, violence against women, women and armed conflict, and women and the economy.
In addition, it covers vital topics, including women in power and decision-making, human rights of women, women and the media, women and the environment, and the empowerment of the girl child.
“The focus of the report will look at the priorities, achievements, challenges and gaps, while also demonstrating and highlighting the emerging and future priorities,” the department said in a statement on Sunday.
South Africa will join the global community in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which coincides with South Africa’s Presidency of the G20, where women’s empowerment and gender equality are a priority.

Department of Health commemorates World Obesity Day
The Department of Health will observe World Obesity Day on Monday, 10 March 2025, to raise awareness about the global challenge of obesity and advocate for systemic changes that promote healthier lifestyles.
This year’s World Obesity Day is celebrated under the theme: “Changing Systems, Healthier Lives,” which emphasises a need to shift focus from individuals to the systems that influence people’s health.
According to the department, previous responses to obesity have primarily focused on individual behaviours. However, this year, they are shifting their focus.
“This highlights the need for multi-sectoral interventions to address the root causes of obesity and improve health outcomes.”
The department highlighted that being overweight and obesity are serious health issues in South Africa, significantly contributing to non-communicable diseases, and are associated with an increased risk of death and disability from these conditions.
According to the 2022 National Food and Nutrition Security Survey, nearly 50% of adults in South Africa are overweight or obese, with 68% of women and 38% of men affected.
In addition, almost 69% of obese adults reside in households that do not have enough food.
It is estimated that by the year 2025, one in four people will be living with obesity.
“It is time we turn our attention to creating supportive environments where people can have access to available healthy food and physical activity opportunities and to receive appropriate nutritional information to make decisions that will contribute to healthy eating habits and lifestyles,” the statement read.
World Obesity Day is observed on March 4 every year to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of obesity in adults and children and to encourage action to address it.
The commemoration will take place at the Durban University of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal today. – SAnews.gov.za
