President pays tribute to gender activist Pamela Mabini

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed condolences to the family, friends and fellow activists of Gqeberha-based whistleblower and gender activist Pamela Mabini.

Mabini played a vital role in supporting victims in the Timothy Omotoso alleged rape and trafficking case.

The 46-year-old woman was shot outside her home on Friday, 7 March 2025.

The President paid tribute to Mabini for standing up for women who experienced gender-based violence.

“…[Mabini] made it her mission to ensure the police and our courts brought perpetrators to justice. The brutality inflicted on Dr Gomolemo Mokae and Pam Mabini – and recently, Imam Muhsin Hendricks – demonstrate that violent criminals have no regard for the lives of South Africans, including selfless and caring citizens who become known publicly for the contributions they make to the upliftment and protection of fellow citizens.

“Their deaths and those of all victims of violence must move communities to work together more closely as citizens and in partnership with the police to prevent violence and to identify perpetrators in instances where attacks result.

“I call on anyone who has information about any criminal activity – including these current cases – to play your role in making South Africa safer by sharing information with the police or community police forums. All of us look forward to law enforcement agencies playing their role in bringing violent criminals to book,” the President said on Sunday.

Mokae, 61, was found dead in his Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, home on Wednesday, 5 March 2025, after he had last been seen on 28 February 2025. He had spent many years caring for patients in Ga-Rankuwa and was experiencing health problems of his own when he was shot in his bed.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, joined the President in extending her heartfelt condolences and expressed deep sadness over the tragic murder of Mabini.

“The department of Justice and Constitutional Development remains committed to ensuring the safety of court users, court officials, presiding officers, community activists, witnesses, and whistleblowers.

“Efforts are underway to strengthen legal protections, including reviewing legislation to close loopholes that hinder these safeguards,” the Minister said.

She emphasised that serving as a friend of the court is not only an act of bravery but also essential for fostering a safer society.

While respecting the independence of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies, the Minister Kubayi urged for a swift and thorough investigation into this tragic loss.

She called on all relevant authorities to intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence and ensure safer communities.

Furthermore, the Minister encouraged whistleblowers not to be deterred by this act and urged anyone with information that could assist in solving this case to come forward. - SAnews.gov.za

Statement by the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa

African Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR)

On this momentous occasion of International Women's Day 2025, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), through its Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa (SRRWA), stands at a pivotal juncture in the global pursuit of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. This year's theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” resonates deeply as we commemorate the 30th  anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This landmark framework has shaped the global agenda for women's rights and gender equality.

The Beijing Declaration, adopted in 1995, was a clarion call to dismantle systemic barriers, challenge discriminatory norms, and ensure the full participation of women in all spheres of life. Three decades later, we celebrate progress, particularly in Africa, where women have broken barriers in politics, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Yet, we must also confront the stark realities that persist: gender-based violence, unequal access to education and healthcare, economic disparities, and the underrepresentation of women in decision-making spaces.

Africa has witnessed remarkable strides in advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls, demonstrating the continent's resilience and commitment to gender equality. Some of the most notable trends include:

  • Increased Political Representation: Since adopting the Beijing Declaration in 1995, numerous African States have made remarkable strides in advancing women's political participation. Rwanda leads globally, with women occupying over 60% of parliamentary seats. Countries such as South Africa, Namibia, and Senegal have also achieved significant progress in promoting gender-balanced representation. Additionally, the appointment of female Heads of State across the continent has marked a transformative shift in political leadership. Notable examples include Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Africa's first elected female president; Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia, who serves as the country's first female president; and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, who became the nation's first female Head of State. Other inspiring leaders include Catherine Samba-Panza of the Central African Republic, interim president, and Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius, the country's first female president. Most recently, Namibia appointed its first female Head of State, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, further underscoring the growing momentum toward gender equality in African politics.
  • Advancements in Education: The gender gap in primary and secondary education is narrowing across the continent. Countries like Kenya, Ghana, and Botswana have achieved near parity in school enrolment, empowering girls with the tools to build brighter futures.
  • Women's Economic Empowerment: African women are increasingly breaking barriers in entrepreneurship and leadership. Initiatives such as the African Women's Development Fund and the African Union's Women in Business program have supported women-led businesses, fostering economic growth and innovation.
  • Legal Reforms: Many African countries have enacted progressive laws to protect women's rights, including laws against gender-based violence, child marriage, and workplace discrimination. Countries like Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Gambia, and Mali have raised the legal age of marriage to 18, safeguarding girls from early marriages.
  • Grassroots Movements: Women-led movements and organizations are driving change at the community level. From the #MeToo movement in Nigeria to the fight against gender-based violence in South Africa, African women are raising their voices and demanding accountability.

Despite these positive trends, significant challenges remain, hindering the full realization of gender equality and women's empowerment in Africa, including:

  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Harmful Traditional Practices: Despite the establishment of progressive legal frameworks, gender-based violence, and harmful traditional practices continue to plague societies, driven by deeply entrenched cultural norms, plural legal systems, and a lack of political will to enforce progressive laws. Child marriage remains widespread, perpetuating cycles of inequality and disempowerment. Similarly, GBV persists at alarming rates, manifesting in domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM). These challenges highlight the urgent need for stronger implementation of existing laws and a transformative shift in societal attitudes to eradicate these violations and protect the rights and dignity of women and girls.
  • Humanitarian crises, such as climate change and conflicts, have further exacerbated these challenges, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections and support systems.
  • Economic Inequality: Women continue to face barriers to economic participation, including limited access to land, credit, and technology. The informal sector, where many African women work, often lacks social protections and fair wages.
  • Health Disparities: Maternal mortality rates remain unacceptably high in some regions, and access to sexual and reproductive health services is often limited. Teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS disproportionately affect women and girls.
  • Underrepresentation in Leadership: While progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in political and corporate leadership roles. Cultural and institutional barriers often prevent women from ascending to decision-making positions.
  • Conflict and Displacement: Women and girls in conflict-affected regions face heightened risks of violence, exploitation, and displacement. The ongoing crises in parts of the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region underscore the need for gender-sensitive peacebuilding and humanitarian responses.
  • Intersectional Discrimination: Marginalized groups of women, including those with disabilities, older women, and rural women, face compounded discrimination and exclusion from opportunities.

To build on the progress and address persistent challenges, the ACHPR urges African governments, civil society, the private sector, and international partners to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and Agenda 2063. This can be achieved through aligning national policies with these frameworks and ensuring gender equality is mainstreamed across all sectors. The ACHPR calls for the strengthening of legal frameworks, enhanced access to justice for survivors, and increased investment in prevention programs to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms.

It further emphasizes the need to expand women entrepreneurs' access to finance, land, and technology and ensure equal pay for equal work to close the gender wage gap. Affirmative action measures, such as quotas, should be implemented to increase the representation of women in political and leadership roles at all levels. The ACHPR also urges prioritizing girls' education, particularly in STEM fields, and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health services. Finally, the ACHPR calls for the recognition and addressing of the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups of women, including those with disabilities, rural women, and refugees.

As we celebrate the resilience and achievements of African women and girls, let us remember that the fight for gender equality is far from over. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, alongside Agenda 2063, provide a roadmap to a future where every woman and girl can live with dignity, freedom, and opportunity. On this International Women's Day, let us recommit to the principles of rights, equality, and empowerment—not just for some, but for ALL women and girls.

Ecobank Côte D’Ivoire Launches West Africa’s First Gender Bond

Location: Business
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated

Ecobank Côte d'Ivoire, a subsidiary of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (www.Ecobank.com), the leading Pan African Bank, takes a major step forward in its commitment to financial inclusion with the launch of the first Gender Bond in West Africa. This groundbreaking bond issuance, amounting to XOF 10 billion, aims to mobilize funding for women-owned and women-led businesses, reducing financing inequalities and fostering inclusive economic growth.

Named "Ellever Gender Bond 6.5% 2024-2029," this bond has been structured and arranged by EDC Investissement Corporation (EIC), Ecobank's Brokerage and Asset Management subsidiary. It marks Ecobank Côte d'Ivoire's second bond issuance after its initial fundraising in 2013. Aligned with international sustainable finance standards, the Gender Bond has received an independent second-party opinion from Morningstar Sustainalytics, ensuring compliance with global best practices in responsible investment.

Since its inception, the ELLEVER program has made a tangible impact on women entrepreneurship. In 2024, over 3,465 businesses registered, benefiting from XOF 13.25 billion in disbursed loans. However, access to financing remains a significant challenge for women entrepreneurs in West Africa, where less than 20% of women-led SMEs have access to adequate funding. Globally, Gender Bonds represented only USD 14.5 billion, accounting for just 1.5% of the sustainable bond market in 2023, underscoring the need to expand such initiatives.

According to Paul-Harry Aithnard, Managing Director of Ecobank Côte d'Ivoire, women's financial inclusion is a major economic priority. "This Gender Bond provides a tangible solution to the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in West Africa. Today, women-led businesses are recognized for their resilience and performance, yet they remain significantly underfunded. Through this issuance, we reaffirm our commitment to building an ecosystem where women have full access to the financial resources they need to grow and succeed. This is a powerful tool to transform access to financing and sustainably accelerate the growth of women-led businesses."

The "Ellever Gender Bond 6.5% 2024-2029" offers investors and the public a unique opportunity to combine profitability with social impact. This five-year bond provides an attractive annual interest rate of 6.5% with a two-year capital repayment grace period. The total issuance of XOF 10 billion consists of one million securities with a nominal value of XOF 10,000 each.

All funds raised will be fully allocated to strengthening the ELLEVER program, financing initiatives led by women, and providing them with tailored financial and technical support. Roseline Abé, Chief Executive Officer of EDC Investissement Corporation, highlights the significance of this initiative: "We have structured this bond to be attractive to investors while delivering a strong impact on women's empowerment in Côte d'Ivoire. This is a unique opportunity to combine financial performance with social inclusion."

With this Gender Bond, Ecobank Côte d'Ivoire cements its leadership in sustainable finance and paves the way for greater economic inclusion. The bank's ambition goes beyond this issuance, as it envisions a long-term strategy to promote innovative and inclusive financial instruments.

Paul-Harry Aithnard concludes: "This issuance is just the beginning. We will continue to develop tailored solutions to enhance women's participation in the economy and encourage other financial institutions to follow this path."

Through this initiative, Ecobank Côte d'Ivoire is transforming access to finance and reaffirming its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

SA to champion women’s leadership on International Women’s Day

As South Africa continues to make significant strides in women’s representation in government, greater efforts are urgently needed to ensure women’s leadership extends to corporate and economic sectors.

The Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities made the remarks ahead of the global commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD) on Saturday, 8 March 2025.

International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration of women’s achievements, as well as a powerful call to action for gender equality.

The day serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions women make to society, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges they continue to face in various spheres of life.

This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action” encourages the global community to intensify efforts to implement strategies, allocate resources, and initiate activities that will positively impact the advancement of women everywhere.

The WID 2025 coincides with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) (“Beijing +30”).

The year also marks the final five years of the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring the urgency of advancing gender equality globally.

The department emphasised that with the right action and support, positive progress can be made for women across the globe.

“South Africa continues to make strides in women’s representation in government, with women making up 46% of Parliament and 43% of the Cabinet. However, greater efforts are needed to ensure women’s leadership in corporate and economic sectors.

“More work should be done to accelerate equal representation, as women remain underrepresented in high-income sectors and continue to face significant wage gaps. To bridge the gap, there is a need to demonstrate actions to stronger policies on financial inclusion, access to credit, and workplace protections for women,” the department said on Friday.

The department highlighted the importance of equipping women with the necessary tools and resources to start and grow businesses, manage household finances, and invest in their futures.

These efforts will strengthen their voices in decisions affecting them, and also help narrow gender gaps in financial access, while endorsing broader social and economic equality.

In alignment with the Government of National Unity's (GNU) priorities for the 7th administration, which has identified rapid, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth for all South Africans, the department emphasised that these priorities align closely with the World Economic Forum's (WEF) agenda for women’s rights.

The WEF focuses on closing gender gaps in economic participation, pay, and leadership.

“The South African Constitution champions the achievement of equality, including gender equality, throughout its provisions, particularly section 9 of the Constitution, which creates a basis for the obligation of the public sector, the private sector and civil society to eliminate and remedy gender, race and social inequalities,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Nelson Mandela Bay unveils backyard dwellers programme

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, has officially unveiled the much-awaited programme to register backyard dwellers for RDP houses.

Launched in KwaLanga, Kariega, on Wednesday, the Backyard Dweller Registration Programme is an effort by the municipality to give special focus to the plight of backyard dwellers, who have been raising what they called a ‘neglect and prioritisation of illegal land occupiers’.

Lobishe explained that the programme will be rolled out by the offices of ward councillors, where backyard dwellers will be registered on a list that will be audited to check whether requirements are met.

“The qualifying residents will then be included in the housing waiting list. Those who have met the requirements and qualified will be informed,” Lobishe said.

Lobishe said the registration programme responded to the plight of backyard dwellers.

Reflecting on the government’s decision to build RDP houses, the Mayor emphasised the aim to restore dignity to previously disadvantaged individuals.

To ensure accurate data collection, she said 200 field workers have been appointed across the city, with four assigned per ward.

Lobishe also commended backyard dwellers for their patience and discipline in refraining from land invasions, saying “this is the time to reward you”.

“The fact that you have stayed in your backyard rooms or houses for all these years, while some have decided to invade land, is not taken for granted. From now we will be moving with speed to complete the registration process in three months’ time.

“We are also engaging the other spheres of government to consider us in their budgeting so that our housing delivery can include backyard dwellers. We accept that we should have done more for you, and appeal that you work with us, as we start this journey,” Lobishe said.

Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Thembinkosi Mafana, said the commencement of the programme is part of the key deliverables for the directorate.

"We have set ourselves key priorities, taking care of the vulnerable, elderly, women, and child- headed families, and addressing the imbalances of the past like backyard dwelling, asbestos-roofed homes and informal settlements,” Mafana said.

One of the prospective backyard dweller beneficiaries, Nosipho Jicelo, said they are happy that the time has come for backyard dwellers to be taken care of.

"Some of us have been living as backyard dwellers for more than 20 years, patiently waiting for us to be considered. We hope that this programme will yield positive results this time around,” Jicelo said.

The registration process will start on 6 March 2025 until the end of June 2025, with a stringent verification process in place. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN Premier calls for swift arrest in Sphindiwe Hlongwa’s murder

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has called for the swift arrest of the perpetrators involved in the rape and murder of Sphindiwe Hlongwa, whose body was found dumped near her home in Mkhazini, south of Durban.

According to reports, Hlongwa, 31, was found strangled to death, with visible signs of assault and a swollen face after being dropped off by a Renault Kwid near her home on Monday evening.

Ntuli has condemned Hlongwa’s killing, describing the act as “barbaric, inhumane, and an attack on the dignity and safety of women” in the province.

“We are deeply horrified by yet another grotesque act of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice without delay. This is one of many murders linked to the scourge of GBVF in our province.

“However, working with the SAPS [South African Police Service] under our Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, we will make sure to treat every case as an emergency, one case at a time. We will never give up and we will do everything to defeat GBVF,” the Premier said.

Ntuli urged anyone with information related to the crime to come forward and assist the police by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.

International Women's Month commemoration

Meanwhile, Ntuli will on Saturday lead a delegation of the Members of the Executive Council (MEC) to commemorate International Women's Day at the KwaMashu Civic Centre.

KZN Premier’s Netball Cup to empower young women

KZN Premier’s Netball Cup to empower young women

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has officially unveiled the 2025 KZN Premier’s Netball Cup, marking a groundbreaking milestone in the province’s efforts to foster netball talent and empower young women through sport.

Launched on Sunday, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Netball Federation, the tournament will take place from 5 - 9 March 2025 at the Victoria Mxenge Indoor Complex in Umlazi, south of Durban.

The competition is designed to provide a platform for young women aged 16 to 36, and serves as a crucial building block for the future of netball in the province.

The tournament will feature 12 district-based teams, each representing a local district and named after its respective mayor. The teams will compete for supremacy in one of the province's most prestigious netball tournaments.

A key feature of the competition is the requirement that each 15-member squad must include at least six players under the age of 20, ensuring the inclusion of emerging talent and helping to nurture the next generation of netball stars.

Furthermore, each team must field a minimum of 12 players per match, with at least 50% match participation, promoting both fairness and opportunities for skill development.

A launchpad for future netball stars

Speaking at the launch, KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, said the tournament will not only showcase the grace and intensity of modern netball, but also offers valuable exposure for players aiming for provincial and national representation.

“Players will have the chance to be scouted for teams such as the Kingdom Stars, KZN’s professional netball franchise, and potentially the Spar Proteas, South Africa’s national netball team. The KZN Premier’s Netball Cup is not just about competition, but it represents a comprehensive strategy to professionalise the sport,” Ntuli said.

The Premier said the tournament aims to contribute to netball’s holistic growth, focusing not only on players but also on coaching, officiating, sports administration, marketing, and sponsorship.

Through these investments, Ntuli said the province is creating pathways for job creation and boosting sport tourism in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Premier also urged local businesses, municipalities, and fans to actively support the sport, both financially and through engagement, to ensure its continued growth and success.

Positioning SA as a dominant force in international netball

The KZN Premier’s Netball Cup aligns with the larger vision of Netball South Africa (NSA), the sport’s governing body, which has been pivotal in positioning South Africa as a dominant force on the global netball stage.

This includes the successful hosting of the 2023 Netball World Cup, which highlighted the country’s rising influence in international netball.

According to NSA, netball is the most popular female sport in South Africa and ranks as the second-most participated sport overall, with over two million active netball players participating on a weekly basis.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has extended its best wishes to all participating teams and encouraged the communities to rally behind their local districts. – SAnews.gov.za

Government welcomes GDP growth

Government welcomes GDP growth

Government has welcomed the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data released by Statistics South Africa, which shows that the economy expanded by 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The growth followed a contraction of 0.1% in the third quarter.

Growth in the fourth quarter was primarily driven by the agriculture, finance, and trade sectors on the production side, while household spending led growth on the expenditure side.

“The latest GDP data is encouraging and signals a welcome recovery, especially because one of government’s immediate priorities is to ensure positive economic growth that will encourage business development and provide more opportunities for employment, especially for women and the youth,” Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director-General, Terry Vandayar, said on Tuesday.

GCIS said government has put in place a broad range of programmes and policies to support the growth of small businesses, develop infrastructure for faster economic growth, and encourage investment from inside and outside of South Africa.

“Working with various stakeholders, Government will continue to build on this momentum to drive even greater economic resilience,” GCIS said. - SAnews.gov.za

KFC Celebrates Inspirational African Women Accelerating Action Towards Equality

Location: Business
KFC Africa

Progress in closing the gender gap in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa has almost halted, leaving millions of women at a disadvantage to men. But female role models across the continent are refusing to admit defeat, dedicating themselves to accelerating progress towards gender equality.

To mark International Women's Day on 8 March and honour its theme of “Accelerate Action”, KFC Africa has collected the stories of dozens of women who are taking bold steps to advance equality on the continent by educating, empowering and supporting women to achieve more, together, faster.

KFC Africa's list contains the names of 54 women – one for each year the company has been in Africa – and follows its successful International Women's Day campaign in 2024 which introduced an inaugural list (https://apo-opa.co/4h5xiID) of 53 “female firsts”. Each of those women had overcome educational, social and financial obstacles to achieve something no woman in their country had done before.

The 2025 list (https://apo-opa.co/4h5xiID), drawn from each of the 22 Sub-Saharan Africa countries where KFC has restaurants, also has its share of female firsts – people such as Dior Fall Sow, Senegal's first female prosecutor; Nelly Mutti, the Zambian parliament's first female speaker; and Adelaide Retselisitsoe Matlanyane, the first woman to lead Lesotho's central bank.

The list is dominated, however, by younger women who are breaking the mould – particularly in the technology sector – and showing they can do anything they set their mind to, regardless of age or gender.

They include the likes of Christine Ogo, a Cote d'Ivoire physicist who has encouraged thousands of schoolgirls to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics; Rachel Sibande, who set up Malawi's first technology incubator for emerging entrepreneurs and has gone on to teach coding to 92,000 women and children; and Regina Honu, whose Tech Needs Girls movement in Ghana has trained more than 20,000 women and girls to code.

Gender gap

“It's a powerful list that gives us hope after  the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report (https://apo-opa.co/4i2QKXB) in 2024 showed that progress seems to have ground to a halt,” says Akhona Qengqe, General Manager of KFC Africa.

The report showed that 68.4% of Sub-Saharan Africa's gender gap had been closed, only marginally higher than 68.2% in 2023 (https://apo-opa.co/3QEYGm5). South Africa, while being Africa's highest scorer and ranking 18th out of 146 nations, went backwards, from 78.7% in 2023 to 78.5% a year later.

“The report says that at the current rate of progress, it will be 2158 until the world reaches full gender parity,” says Qengqe. “That's why we need to accelerate action, particularly in Africa, and why the efforts of the women on the KFC list are worthy of recognition and support.”

In her seven years at KFC – she was as director of Africa franchise development, director of transformation and diversity and chief people officer before taking over as general manager in April 2023 – Qengqe has prioritised female empowerment.

Her initiatives include spearheading KFC Add Hope, a women-led programme that serves free meals to tens of thousands of children at more than 3,000 feeding centres across South Africa.

In 2021, she launched the Women on the Move leadership development programme, which prepares 22 women at KFC for future leadership positions every year, cultivating a pipeline of talent. Within two years, the number of female leaders in the business grew by 14%.

Transforming franchising

Last November she turned her attention to the wider quick service restaurant sector, launching Women in Franchising Africa (Wifa), the first network for current and aspiring female franchisees and franchisors across the continent.

“To say I am passionate about the inclusion of women in growing our economies is an understatement. It is in fact one of my life's purposes,” she says. “My partners in Wifa intend to transform the participation of women in the franchising sector across African economies.

“We want to educate women on how to run successful franchise businesses, provide networking opportunities for like-minded women, transform the sector by making funding accessible to women, and create mentorship opportunities for all the women in the network.”

KFC Africa Chief People Officer Nolo Thobejane says “Accelerate Action” is a call to look at what has a positive impact on women's advancement and replicate it.

“This is a journey we need to embark on together as we learn from each other. I cannot stress enough the importance of forming alliances and partnerships to amplify impact. By working together, organisations and individuals can share resources, knowledge, and support to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for women.”

“At KFC, we have implemented some programmes which have yielded great results – such as the Women on the Move Leadership programme to ensure the pipeline of leaders, developing them with quality education and training through initiatives like our Streetwise Academy and then providing career support into positions of leadership.”

“Other successful initiatives organisations can implement include designing and building infrastructure that meets the needs of women and girls, involving them in sustainable agriculture, and elevating their participation and achievement in sport, as we do with KFC Mini Cricket.”

“There's a lot we can do as individuals, too – we can call out stereotypes, challenge discrimination, question bias and celebrate women's success. Everyone everywhere can Accelerate Action.”

Qengqe says the new list of 54 names brings to 107 the number of inspirational African women KFC has honoured and recognised in the past two years. “We know this is the tip of a wonderful iceberg, and we welcome nominations of other women who are Accelerating Action in Africa.”

SA joins the world in marking Hearing Day

SA joins the world in marking Hearing Day

All South Africans have been called to join the global community in commemorating World Hearing Day on Monday.

World Hearing Day, which is celebrated annually on 3 March, aims to raise awareness about deafness and hearing and to promote access to ear and hearing care.

The day highlights a specific theme on which the World Health Organisation and its partners carry out activities based on the theme.

This year’s World Hearing Day theme, “Changing mindsets: Empower yourself”, builds on the 2024 focus on changing mindsets towards ear and hearing care.

Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities spokesperson, Cassius Selala, said that hearing was fundamental to communication, education, employment, and overall well-being.

“If it is left unaddressed, hearing loss can hinder speech development, academic progress, and economic opportunities. It can also lead to social isolation, stigma, and reduced quality of life.

“Hearing impairment (HI) is a silent planetary health crisis that requires attention worldwide. The prevalence of HI in South Africa is estimated at 5.5 in 100 live births, which is about five times higher than the prevalence in high-income countries,” Selala said.

According to the World Report on Hearing 2022, approximately four million people with a hearing disability live in South Africa. However, less than 600 000 South Africans use South African Sign Language, which accounts for just 0.02% of the country’s population, according to Census 2022.

Urgent interventions needed

Selala warned that without urgent interventions, hearing loss, particularly among vulnerable and disadvantaged populations, will continue to rise, exacerbating existing inequalities in healthcare access across the continent.

“It is estimated that by 2030, over 500 million people are expected to have disabling hearing loss, which will also require rehabilitation. Over the years, one billion young people will also face the risk of permanent hearing loss due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds during recreational pastimes, such as listening to music and video game play,” Selala said.

Addressing hearing impairment

To address the growing challenge of hearing impairment, the department is advocating for several key actions, and these include:
• Improve access to ear and hearing care, especially in underserved communities.
• Combat stigma and misperceptions about hearing loss through education and awareness campaigns.
• Strengthen national policies to integrate hearing care into primary healthcare
systems.
• Expand training programmes to increase the number of skilled hearing care
professionals.
• Invest in infrastructure and assistive devices, ensuring that hearing aids, cochlear implants and other technologies are available and affordable for those who need them.

Selala urged individuals of all ages to empower themselves, to ensure healthy ears and hearing for themselves and others. – SAnews.gov.za

Social Development and BMA to strengthen social services at border posts

Location: News

Social Development and BMA to strengthen social services at border posts

The Department of Social Development and the Border Management Authority (BMA) have committed to working together to address gaps in social service delivery at border crossings.

The two bodies held a high-level strategic meeting focusing on implementing the strategy for the employment of social workers and other social service professionals.

The meeting examined strengthening the partnerships between the two entities to address essential gaps in social service delivery, particularly in cross-border contexts.

The session, chaired by Acting Deputy Director-General for Corporate Support Services Lumka Oliphant, explored avenues for collaboration. This included building synergies between social service professionals and border management officials, recognising the vital role social workers play in protecting vulnerable groups including undocumented migrants, victims of human trafficking, and children in need of care and protection.

Amanda Vokwana, the department’s Director of Organisational Development and HR Planning, outlined the strategy for the employment of social workers and other social service professionals.

The strategy was developed as part of a broader government effort to employ 55 000 social service professionals by 2030, in alignment with the National Development Plan.

“This strategy is not just a vision; it is a collective commitment to building a social service sector that is responsive to the needs of our communities. It seeks to address the employment gaps faced by social workers while ensuring that their skills are effectively utilised in both the public and private sectors,” Vokwana said at Friday's meeting.

This as the country continues to face pressing social ills, including poverty, substance abuse, gender-based violence, child-headed households, and human trafficking, she emphasised.

The strategy provides a framework for recruiting, training, and retaining qualified social service professionals to tackle these issues. It also introduces a funding and deployment model to ensure professionals are placed where they are needed most, including in border management operations.

Vulnerable groups

A significant part of the meeting held in Pretoria focused on a proposal for collaboration between the department and the BMA.
The proposal presented by Oliphant underscored the vital need to integrate social workers into the BMA’s operations, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups.

Oliphant highlighted that, like the South African National Defence Force, the South African Police Service, and the Department of Correctional Services, the Border Management Authority also requires dedicated social workers.
“Border posts are high-risk environments where social vulnerabilities intersect with security concerns.

“Social workers play an essential role in ensuring that individuals, especially children and victims of trafficking, receive the necessary psychosocial support and interventions in line with legislative frameworks,” she explained.

Beyond assisting vulnerable groups, Oliphant stressed that social workers would also be instrumental in supporting the Border Management Authority’s personnel who are frequently exposed to traumatic and high-pressure situations.

“Border officials often deal with emotionally taxing cases, from human trafficking survivors to desperate asylum seekers. Having in-house social workers would provide much-needed psychological support and trauma counselling, ensuring the well-being of both staff and those they serve.

“With the growing complexities of migration and border-related social issues, it is critical that social service professionals are part of border management processes. Their expertise in psychosocial support, child protection, and victim assistance will enhance the effectiveness of our interventions,” she said.

The Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, Peter Mphilo, acknowledged the financial constraints that have hindered the establishment of an independent social services unit within the agency.

While recognising the initial intent to develop internal capacity, he emphasised the necessity of collaboration with the Department of Social Development and provincial stakeholders.

“We appreciate the assistance and cooperation from the provinces. The demand for social services at our border posts far exceeds supply, and this collaboration is critical in addressing those challenges,” Mphilo said.

Infrastructure

He highlighted the need to assess infrastructure requirements at border posts, focusing on interception procedures, interview facilities, and the seamless handover of vulnerable individuals to inland social services.

“Mapping out the entire process, from the port of entry to final social service intervention, is crucial for us to determine what needs to be funded,” he added.

Regarding funding strategies, Mphilo inquired about the role of donor funding and private sector involvement in the employment of social workers.

He stressed the importance of understanding whether private players directly fund social worker employment or contribute to broader organisational initiatives.

Moving forward, the Border Management Authority aims to refine its strategy by aligning funding mechanisms, infrastructure planning, and service delivery models to support social service professionals operating within border management, effectively.
“We need to be guided in terms of requirements. A phased approach, where we employ one or two social workers per region to provide advisory services, would be beneficial.

“Currently, we rely on provinces for support, but their capacity varies, and assistance does not always arrive on time. Having dedicated social workers within border regions would help bridge this gap.”

Mphilo also emphasised the importance of ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks, particularly the Children’s Act, given that many women who cross borders irregularly do so with children.

The presence of social workers at border posts would help facilitate proper child protection interventions.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its partnership with the department, benefitting from its support, and actively participating in the broader interdepartmental task team to enhance social service provision within border management operations. – SAnews.gov.za
