The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has expressed serious concern about the Tshwane Metro’s latest supply chain report for April to June 2025, which clearly shows that the Metro’s financial management and service delivery are in crisis.
According to the report, the Metro spent R284,7 million on purchases, but failed to follow the prescribed procedures. These so-called “deviations” mean that goods and services were procured without adhering to the required processes.
In addition, an amount of R550 million was irregularly spent and is currently being investigated. These funds were earmarked for improving service delivery, but have quite possibly been squandered.
Projects meant to benefit the Metro and its residents, such as road repairs and replacing or upgrading power infrastructure, are delayed because contracts are not finalised within the legally required 90-day period.
In just three months, assets worth R1,39 million, including equipment and vehicles, were stolen, indicating that the Metro’s property is not secure.
Moreover, underperforming contractors who fail to meet required standards are still allowed to do business with the Metro without facing any consequences.
These issues have a direct impact on residents who are constantly faced with power outages, water shortages and deteriorating roads, all while the Metro squanders money and mismanages resources.
It is critically important to hold officials accountable and discipline those who fail to fulfil their required duties. Contracts should be awarded in a timely and fair manner, as mandated by law, while fraud and theft should be thoroughly investigated. Also, the police should be called in to help track down stolen assets.
Tshwane Metro residents pay good money for services and do not deserve to have their money recklessly squandered.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on to ensure that the Metro spends taxpayers’ money responsibly and provides proper services.
