The widespread support from across the political spectrum for the Freedom Front Plus’s (VF Plus) proposal, during today’s debate in the Mpumalanga Legislature, to utilise pebble bed modular reactors (PBMR) means there is hope for a cleaner province.
While the ANC supported the motion, the party expressed concerns about potential job losses in the coal industry.
However, other political parties prioritised the health of the province’s residents in light of the severe air pollution currently plaguing Mpumalanga.
The PBMR is an advanced, compact form of nuclear power that uses heat-resistant fuel pellets. It is inherently safe and ideal for cleaner power generation near consumer points.
Other benefits include:
- Very low emissions, significantly reducing air pollution.
- Safer than traditional nuclear power, with no risk of a meltdown.
- Creation of high-skill job opportunities in technical sectors.
- A small carbon footprint, making it suitable for urban or remote areas.
South Africa currently relies heavily on wind and solar power.
These are, however, insufficient for large industries due to their variability. They lack the capacity to meet the high and consistent power demands of large industries due to their dependence on constantly changing weather conditions.
In the Freedom Front Plus’s view, the widespread political support for the proposal is a positive step toward a healthier and more sustainable Mpumalanga.
