The water supply to Kampersrus has been successfully restored after two weeks of severe disruption caused by flash floods. The floods damaged the main pipeline at a natural spring, plunging the town into an emergency situation.

What initially appeared to be a paralysing crisis was overcome through remarkable cooperation between the local community, farmers and the Municipality.

After the extent of the damage was confirmed on 23 January, residents and community leaders immediately joined forces to find solutions.

The Mopani District Municipality had supplied only one water tanker, which fell far short of demand, so, rapid intervention was crucial.

While the Hoedspruit farm watch and local farmers provided trucks with water tanks, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) funded pipes and fittings worth R3 500, which were used to create an outlet for emergency water supply.

Doing the necessary repairs was a challenge. The spring’s strong flow slowed the process, but Bedford Estates residents supported the technical team by redirecting the flow using sandbags. When more leaks were discovered and the absence of a TLB caused delays, David Swarts and his team from the Jahara Rehabilitation Centre proceeded to manually excavate the pipeline.

Thanks to this collective effort, the final repairs were completed just in time for the reservoirs to be refilled before sunset.

The Freedom Front Plus wants to thank the Hoedspruit farm watch, local farmers, Mr Paul Malan for his coordination of the efforts, Bedford Estates residents and the municipal teams for their valuable contribution.

This success story confirms that when community members join forces, they can overcome any crisis.
