Government’s Failure Leaves Sa’s Automotive Industry in Crisis and Erodes Investor Confidence

The future of Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) – and with it more than 4 000 jobs and tens of thousands of positions throughout the automotive value chain – hangs in the balance due to government’s ongoing failure to take decisive action by making essential policy adjustments for the automotive industry.

Volkswagen has unequivocally stated that 2026 will be a make-or-break year for the company in South Africa.

Despite constant engagement with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and even a formal letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa, government has not responded with any meaningful policy changes. Words without action is not leadership – it is negligence.

Government’s inaction is sending an extremely negative signal to the international investor community. Because capital is mobile, manufacturers always have options. When South Africa cannot offer policy certainty, competitiveness and urgency, investments are simply moved to other countries such as Egypt, India or Asia. Once lost, those investments rarely return.

Failure to align the Automotive Industry Masterplan 2035 with current realities accelerates de-industrialisation, undermines localisation and exposes one of South Africa’s most strategic sectors to large-scale job losses – the country simply cannot afford this. The automotive industry is a cornerstone of exports, skills development and manufacturing capacity.

Allowing it to decline through policy paralysis is economic suicide.

South Africa does not lack plans – it lacks execution, speed and political will.

Government has to act decisively to restore investor confidence, protect jobs and prevent South Africa from once again becoming an industrial graveyard. The price of further inaction will be factories closing down, jobs being lost and related opportunities becoming a thing of the past.
