Expecting a State of the Nation Address (SONA) prioritising the people of South Africa’s interests above those of the ANC is surely wishful thinking, but it remains crucial and the only way to get the country back on the right track.
So, tomorrow evening with the SONA, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) would particularly like to hear that the interests of South Africa and its people are put first in the context of this dramatically changing geopolitical world.
There are currently extremely good opportunities arising to turn the country around and create an environment facilitating strong economic growth, which will result in job opportunities for millions of desperate, unemployed South Africans.
President Cyril Ramaphosa should, for once, take a stand and demonstrate that he has the courage to make the right decisions, even if they are not aligned with his own party’s outdated ideological ties from the past.
Secondly, the Freedom Front Plus would like to hear what urgent interventions the Government of National Unity (GNU) plans to implement to resolve the foot-and-mouth disease disaster.
The damage already caused by the epidemic is enormous, so, decisive and swift action is required.
Another matter of critical importance is to hear what will be done to establish a new, credible and corruption-free South African Police Service. The entire force will have to be reconstructed from top to bottom to be successful and credible.
The police force is the cornerstone of the entire criminal justice system and when it is riddled with criminal elements within its own ranks, crime takes over – as is currently the case.
The Freedom Front Plus is tired of hearing impractical plans and empty promises, such as smart cities and high-speed trains while the current public transport system is, much like municipalities, falling apart.
To achieve all this, fundamental adjustments need to be made to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy in order to give the people hope and put food on their table again.

Fun South African Fact: South African Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant on 3 December 1967 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The groundbreaking surgery was carried out on Louis Washkansky and Dr. Barnard was assisted by a large and exceptional team of surgeons, nurses and technicians. One of Dr. Barnard’s assistants was Hamilton Naki, a black laboratory assistant who had worked previously as a gardener and went on to work in the animal laboratory at the University of Cape Town. He had assisted Dr Barnard with research leading to the transplant. In the apartheid days, Naki had no access to higher education due to his race. Despite being unable to access formal training, he learned from and assisted university researchers and went on to do astonishing work.
