The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands clarity on the Mbombela Local Municipality’s land audit that has been dragging on for years.
The ANC government should be held accountable for the lack of transparency regarding state-owned land in the Municipality.
The Council resolved, as far back as 30 November 2017, that the finalised land audit should be obtained from the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. Today, nearly nine years later, taxpayers are still waiting on the information. The audit was supposed to have been tabled to the Council by February 2021, but the foot-dragging continues.
The main aim of the audit is to enable the Portfolio Committee on City Planning to formally identify state-owned land within the boundaries of Nelspruit, White River, Hazyview and Barberton. Without this data, the public remains in the dark about the true extent of land in state ownership.
Meanwhile, voters are bombarded during every election campaign with political rhetoric about land expropriation, while the ANC itself does not even have the facts straight.
In the Freedom Front Plus’s view, this failure either amounts to gross incompetence or deliberate withholding of information for political reasons.
The party sent questions in writing to the Executive Mayor, Me Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, to establish why the Council’s resolution has not been implemented and why no official has taken the simple step of obtaining the documentation from the District Municipality.
The party demands that the audit provide a full breakdown of all state-owned land, including tribal land, state farms and informal settlement areas, so that it can be compared with privately owned land in Mbombela.
Mbombela residents deserve facts, not political slogans.
The Freedom Front Plus will demand answers at the upcoming quarterly council meeting and insist on a thorough analysis of the data.
Meaningful decisions about land and development in the region can only be taken based on facts.
