The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, missed a golden opportunity to do away with the ANC’s failed socialist policies, and replace them with a fair free-market system, by recently introducing new crisis packages and artificial regulations.

These failed policies have directly contributed to the current trade crisis with the United States (US).

Government now intends to grant temporary exemptions from standard competition legislation to boost exports, on condition that small- to medium-sized enterprises meeting Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) requirements are included and that approval from the Competition Commission is required.

According to the Minister, the plan entails the following core objectives:

  1. Continued engagement with the US to reduce tariffs.
  2. Diversification of exports to alternative markets.
  3. An economic relief package for vulnerable companies and workers.
  4. Trade defence measures against dumping and import surges.
  5. Interventions aimed at increasing local demand.

Government is also introducing an export desk and plans to implement regulations temporarily exempting companies from certain provisions of the Competition Act to allow cooperation on exports.

These regulations will only apply for five years, though, whereafter they may be reviewed.

Stakeholders can make submissions on the regulations until 2 September 2025.

In the Freedom Front Plus’s (VF Plus) view, these steps are like putting band-aids on a broken system.

The new 30% trade tariffs imposed on South African exports by the US are a direct result of the ANC’s poor socialist policy directions, corruption and mismanagement.

While the ANC has painted itself into a corner, the Freedom Front Plus wants to point out that South Africa now needs a republican solution grounded in free-market principles, self-reliance and the promotion of a healthy business environment.
South Africa has to move away from state-driven socialism and exploiting Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) towards a system that offers equal opportunities to all enterprises, while aggressively developing new markets in Africa, Europe and Asia.

The focus should be on boosting energy independence, food security and industrial capabilities in order to withstand foreign pressure. Corruption, cadre deployment and wasteful expenditure have devastated South Africa’s economy.

Public funds should be managed transparently and accountably. Local economies should be built from the ground up so that communities and smaller enterprises can develop without excessive government interference.

The Freedom Front Plus is committed to increasing its stabilising influence in local authorities after the 2026 local government elections.

Since 1994, the ANC has kept South Africa in an unsustainable position, forcing the country to repeatedly announce crisis packages to alleviate foreign pressure.

A republican economic framework, as advocated by the Freedom Front Plus, builds sustainable prosperity, local self-reliance and international credibility.

The ANC’s failures have forced South Africa to beg for better trade terms. It is time for South Africa to restore its sovereignty and economic independence by adopting a republican, free-market approach.

The Freedom Front Plus is the last bastion that promotes republican values in South Africa’s party-political landscape.
