The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in Mossel Bay is inundated with complaints about poor service delivery and the unsustainability of sky-high tariffs.
The party learnt of a recent case where the Municipality imposed a levy of R22 million on an Afrikaans school to be constructed in the Hartland estate in Hartenbos.
This is the amount Hartland Akademie will have to pay once the school’s enrolment reaches one thousand pupils. The developers were dealt this shocking blow after two years of administrative red tape and delays, including a rezoning application.
According to the original planning, the school was meant to open in November 2025, but construction has not even begun.
At present, there is only one academic single-medium Afrikaans high school serving predominantly white feeder zones in the Southern Cape, namely Hoërskool Outeniqua in George, while English- and Xhosa-medium schools abound in a region where more than 70% of the population speaks Afrikaans as their mother tongue.
The demand for Christian Afrikaans schools is overwhelming and urgent, especially seeing as the Western Cape Education Department recently terminated 2 400 teaching posts and a further 1 200 educators resigned.
The Freedom Front Plus urgently appeals to the Mossel Bay Municipality to adjust this levy and offer the developers other incentives to facilitate the construction of the school.
This is not only in the best interest of 70% of residents, but will also create much-needed jobs for economic growth.
It is no use if the mayor and his councillors appear in photographs when projects are launched, make promises to developers, and then nothing comes of it.
Mossel Bay residents deserve better.
