Ross Badenhorst, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty coxswain, said: At 13h34, Tuesday, 24 September, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a double surfski, with a local mom and daughter onboard, in difficulties offshore of Natures Valley.
NSRI crew responded directly to the scene while the NSRI rescue craft The Courtenay’s Rescuer was launched.
An NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer, paddling with a group of paddlers, on surf-skis, who had launched earlier at Lookout Beach, while paddling in the area he diverted to go to the assistance of the surfski casualties.
It appears that they had suffered rudder failure causing them to capsize and the mom and daughter were being swept out to sea.
Our NSRI crewman, Neal Stephenson, located the casualties adrift in the water holding onto their surfski.
He was able to help them to get back into their surfski.
Our NSRI rescue craft arrived on the scene where the mom and daughter were taken onboard the rescue craft and their surfski was recovered.
They were brought safely to Natures Valley where once safely ashore and reunited with the group of paddlers no further assistance was required.
