26 September 2024 by Guest

Simon McDonnell, NSRI Simonstown station commander, said: At 16h21, Saturday, 21 September, NSRI Simonstown duty crew were activated following a NSRI SafeTrx emergency activation, intercepted by NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) from a local paddler on a surfski reporting to be in difficulties at Sunny Cove corner, near to Fish Hoek, in an onshore strong gusting South Easterly wind.

WC Government Health EMS Metro Control activated the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter while NSRI Simonstown crew responded to the NSRI Simonstown station 10 rescue base where the NSRI craft Jack&Irene was launched.

NSRI shore crew responded to the scene by road to get visuals of the paddler.

NSRI EOC continued to monitor the drift of the paddler.

The NSRI rescue craft reached the casualty off-shore of Fish Hoek finding him to be hypothermic and he was rescued onto the rescue craft where rewarming measures commenced.

CMR (Cape Medical Response) was activated to respond to the NSRI Simonstown rescue base.

The EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was stood down.

On arrival at the NSRI base the local adult man was taken into the care of paramedics and released after being rewarmed.

NSRI commend the paddler for using the NSRI SafeTrx free smartphone application.

Earlier, at 14h37, NSRI Simonstown duty crew were activated following reports of a yacht that drifted onto rocks at Admiralty Beach, Simonstown.

The yacht, taking part in the FBYC (False Bay Yacht Club) Spring Regatta, with 2 local crew onboard, reportedly fouled their motor propellor and drifted onto rocks.

While NSRI Simonstown crew were preparing to launch the NSRI rescue craft Jack&Irene a local private RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat), Ruby Runner, assisting at the regatta, went to the assistance of the yacht and was able to pull them off the rocks without incident and no further assistance was required.

The crew of Ruby Runner are commended for swiftly assisting the casualty yacht.
