Recognise Mimi Coertse’s Exceptional Achievements

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) tabled a parliamentary motion this afternoon, requesting that the life and exceptional achievements of Mimi Coertse, South Africa’s most celebrated opera singer and international star, be duly honoured and recognised.

Coertse, who passed away on 27 April this year at the age of 93, made a phenomenal contribution to the performing arts worldwide.

The motion notes Coertse’s glittering international career, particularly at the Vienna State Opera. Over the course of nearly two decades, she performed in more than 400 productions and was acclaimed for her technical brilliance and artistic excellence.

Coertse received numerous prestigious awards, including the title of Austrian “Kammersängerin”, one of the highest recognitions for an opera singer.

In South Africa, she received awards such as the Order for Meritorious Service and the Order of Ikhamanga for her exceptional contribution to music and culture.

The motion further requests that recognition be given to her role as a cultural ambassador for South Africa during her international career, in which she promoted South African and Afrikaans music on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Coertse’s invaluable contribution to the development of the arts in South Africa must be acknowledged, including her dedication to mentoring young musicians and her involvement in initiatives to promote classical and indigenous music.

Her lifelong commitment to the preservation and promotion of Afrikaans cultural heritage is of significant, as is her enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations of South Africans.

The Freedom Front Plus extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched during her glittering career.
