The kitchen is a significant water user in the house, but there are many ways to reduce your kitchen water usage. Like other areas around the house a few simple changes can make a big difference and help cut down on your water usage in the kitchen.

Here are some simple tips to help you save water in your kitchen:

  1. Fix leaks: A leaky tap or pipe can waste a lot of water over time, so it is important to check your taps, pipes and appliances in your kitchen and fix them immediately.
  2. Use a tap aerator: Install a tap aerator to mix water with air reducing flow while maintaining pressure.
  3. Purchase a dishwasher with water saving cycle: To save water, wait until a full load is in your dishwasher then run it and use the water-saving cycle. This reduces the number of loads you run in a day.
  4. Turn off the tap while washing dishes: Turn off the tap while washing dishes, rinsing vegetables and fruits, or cleaning your hands. Instead, use a bowl to rinse your veggies and fruits more often.
  5. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean: Sweep floors instead of using a hose to save up to ten gallons of water per minute or use a damp cloth to clean up any spills.
  6. Monitor your water usage: Regularly check your water meter to detect hidden leaks or water-wasting habits.
  7. Choose water-efficient appliances: When it’s time to upgrade your kitchen appliances consider choosing water-efficient models. In stores look for appliances with the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme label which indicates the water efficiency of an appliance.
  8. Reuse water when possible: When you are cooking or cleaning, try to reuse water whenever possible. When you are boiling pasta, save the pasta water to use it later as a base for soup or water your plant. Same goes for the water used to clean fruit and vegetables.
  9. Install a low flow tap: Consider installing a low flow tap to reduce your water usage. These taps use less water without sacrificing performance, so you even notice a difference in your daily routine.
  10. Use the water disposal sparingly: Waste disposal can be a convenient way to dispose of food scraps. With fewer scraps and spills, you will use less water for cleaning and washing dishes.

By implementing these simple smart tips, you will significantly reduce your kitchen water consumption, contributing to a more sustainable future.
