Presidency asserts stance on South Africa’s foreign policy

Presidency asserts stance on South Africa’s foreign policy

The Presidency has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to a foreign policy grounded in solidarity, peace, equality, human rights and sustainable development for the benefit of all.

In a statement on Sunday, the Presidency emphasised that President Cyril Ramaphosa is dedicated to strengthening political and trade ties, while supporting the rights of oppressed communities globally.

“As President Cyril Ramaphosa continues to lead the 7th administration in strengthening all key political and trade ties, working in solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world in Palestine and Western Sahara, while advocating for peaceful resolution of conflicts around the globe, South Africa will maintain a foreign policy that is informed by solidarity, peace, equality, human rights and sustainable development for the benefit of all.

"This is the responsibility that President Ramaphosa will continue to exercise without any undue pressure and in line with South Africa’s national sovereign interest,” the Presidency said.

In an August 2023 address preceding the South African-hosted 15th BRICS Summit, President Ramaphosa outlined the values underpinning the country’s foreign policy.

In the address, President Ramaphosa articulated the principles and values that shape the country’s foreign policy and inform its international relations.

“Before the dawn of democracy in 1994, the apartheid South African state was a pariah in the international community, condemned for committing a crime against humanity," President Ramaphosa said at the time.

He highlighted that the foreign policy of apartheid South Africa was defined by coercion, destabilisation and military aggression.

“Since the advent of democracy, South Africa’s foreign policy has been based on what our forebears inscribed in the Freedom Charter in 1955, when they declared that: 'South Africa shall be a fully independent State, which respects the rights and the sovereignty of all nations; South Africa shall strive to maintain world peace and the settlement of all international disputes by negotiation – not war'."

The President further affirmed South Africa’s foreign policy as a vital element of the nation's progress. South Africa’s strong relations with other countries manifested through investment and trade relations that can contribute to the growth of the economy, create more opportunities for new businesses and create jobs.

“President Ramaphosa has been steadfast in maintaining South Africa’s commitment to the policy of active non-alignment. South Africa has resisted pressure to align with any one of the global powers or with influential blocs of nations in their pursuit of power contestations that are unfolding in countries across the globe.

“The President observed during his foreign policy address that, 'during the Cold War, the stability and sovereignty of many African countries was undermined because of their alignment with the major powers. This experience has convinced us of the need to seek strategic partnerships with other countries rather than be dominated by any other country.

“While some of our detractors prefer overt support for their political and ideological choices, we will not be drawn into a contest between global powers. Instead, our country strives to work with all countries for global peace and development,” the Presidency said.

The Presidency noted that it is this resolute adherence to the policy of non-alignment and to the prescripts of the Freedom Charter which informed the nation’s Constitution that South Africa continues to contribute towards the attainment of world peace and silencing the guns on the continent.

The Presidency clarified that President Ramaphosa’s recent remarks declaring President Putin and the people of Russia as “valuable friends and allies”, he was not projecting any particular country or bloc of countries as the enemy.

“Similarly, as a country that has no enemies, South Africa regards the members of BRICS as friends. It is through the policy of non-alignment that South Africa has been able to constructively engage with both Russia and Ukraine.

“In several engagements, President Ramaphosa has emphasised the centrality of the United Nations Charter and the need for peaceful dialogue in resolving conflict. In the process South Africa has also maintained its strong historical ties with the Russian Federation, whilst enjoying cordial diplomatic bilateral relations with Ukraine.

“South Africa has also been unwavering in advocating for a peace process that includes the full participation of both countries,” the Presidency said.

Today, International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, will host his Ukrainian counterpart, Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Amongst the highlights of the visit will be the signing of an Agreement on Visa Waiver for Diplomatic Service or Official Passports.

This will enable South African officials to travel to Ukraine for peace formula meetings without visa logistical impediments. This development, which has been in the making since 2020, signals South Africa’s commitment to growing diplomatic relations with Ukraine.

South Africa will soon host the South Africa-European Union summit as part of its G20 presidency, strengthening its strategic partnership with the EU.

South Africa is the only partner in Africa amongst the European Union’s 10 bilateral strategic partnerships.

The summit will further enhance the existing partnership with the European Union.

South Africa will continue working towards strengthening the strategic, trade and political bilateral relationships with key partners including the Peoples Republic of China, United States of America, Germany, Japan, India and others.

South Africa will further consolidate the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is set to eliminate trade barriers, boost intra African trade and achieve prosperity for all of Africa. The African Continental Free Trade Area will also accelerate manufacturing and industrial capacity on the continent. – SAnews.gov.za

SA's cruise season officially underway

The docking of the World Odyssey at the Port of Cape Town signifies the beginning of South Africa’s cruise season, which will see the docking and sailing of 268 passenger liners at the commercial seaports operated by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

The vessel arrived on 22 October 2024 at the port renowned for being a popular stopover for cruise liners and was recently voted as Africa’s Leading Cruise Port in the 31st Annual World Travel Awards.

Sailing under the flag of the Bahamas, the World Odyssey cruise liner brought approximately 538 international tourists onboard, paving the way for a projected 130 000 tourists anticipated to visit Cape Town during this cruise season.

The 268 scheduled passenger liners, represents an increase of 29% from 207 call-ins in the previous year.

These vessels will pull along at seven South African commercial seaports, with Cape Town set to welcome 88 call-ins, 47 for Durban, 43 for Gqeberha, 27 for Mossel Bay, five for Saldanha, 14 each for Richards Bay and East London.

“The upsurge in the anticipated vessel call-ins this season supports the strategic positioning of South Africa’s ports as key drivers of economic growth and gateways for international trade.

“The cruise liner segment is one of the fastest-growing contributors to the country's GDP through tourism revenue. As TNPA, we look forward to collaborating with cruise tourism stakeholders to support the growth of the economy.

“Building on the success of the previous cruise season, TNPA continues to provide reliable marine services as well as creating berth capacity to enable an efficient cruise vessel service,” said Advocate Phyllis Difeto, the TNPA Acting Chief Executive.

TNPA anticipates that more vessels will be confirmed as the cruise season progresses.

TNPA is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient economic functioning of the national port system, which it manages in a landlord capacity.

It provides port infrastructure and marine services at the eight commercial seaports in South Africa – Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura.

It also operates within a legislative and regulatory environment and is governed by the National Ports Act (Act No. 12 of 2005). – SAnews.gov.za

Presidency Asserts Responsibility and Stance on South Africa’s Foreign Policy

Location: News

The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa

On the 20th of August 2023, ahead of the South African Chaired 15th BRICS Summit, President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered an address to the nation on South Africa's foreign policy.

In the address, President Ramaphosa articulated the principles and values that shape our foreign policy and inform our international relations when he said: “Before the dawn of democracy in 1994, the apartheid South African state was a pariah in the international community, condemned for committing a crime against humanity.

The foreign policy of apartheid South Africa was defined by coercion, destabilisation and military aggression. Since the advent of democracy, South Africa's foreign policy has been based on what our forebears inscribed in the Freedom Charter in 1955, when they declared that: “South Africa shall be a fully independent state which respects the rights and the sovereignty of all nations; South Africa shall strive to maintain world peace and the settlement of all international disputes by negotiation – not war”.

The President further affirmed South Africa's foreign policy as vital element of our nation's progress. South Africa's strong relations with other countries manifested through investment and trade relations that can contribute to the growth of our economy, create more opportunities for new businesses and create jobs.

President Ramaphosa has been steadfast in maintaining South Africa's commitment to the policy of active non-alignment. South Africa has resisted pressure to align with any one of the global powers or with influential blocs of nations in their pursuit of power contestations that are unfolding in countries across the globe.

The President observed during his foreign policy address that, “during the ‘Cold War', the stability and sovereignty of many African countries was undermined because of their alignment with the major powers. This experience has convinced us of the need to seek strategic partnerships with other countries rather than be dominated by any other country.

While some of our detractors prefer overt support for their political and ideological choices, we will not be drawn into a contest between global powers. Instead, our country strives to work with all countries for global peace and development."

It is this resolute adherence to the policy of non-alignment and to the prescripts of the Freedom Charter which informed our constitution that South Africa continues to contribute towards the attainment of world peace and silencing the guns on our continent.

In declaring President Putin and the people of Russia as “valuable friends and allies”, President Ramaphosa was not projecting any particular country or block of countries as the enemy. Similarly, as a country that has no enemies, South Africa regards the members of BRICS as friends.

It is through the policy of non-alignment that South Africa has been able to constructively engage with both Russia and Ukraine.

In several engagements, President Ramaphosa has emphasised the centrality of the United Nations Charter and the need for peaceful dialogue in resolving conflict. In the process South Africa has also maintained its strong historical ties with the Russian Federation, whilst enjoying cordial diplomatic bilateral relations with Ukraine.

South Africa has also been unwavering in advocating for a peace process that includes the full participation of both countries.

On Monday, 28 October 2024, South Africa's International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Hon. Ronald Lamola, will host his Ukrainian counterpart, Minister Andrii Sybiha. Amongst the highlights of the visit will be the signing of an Agreement on Visa Waiver for Diplomatic Service or Official Passports.

This will enable South African officials to travel to Ukraine for peace formula meetings without visa logistical impediments. This development, which has been in the making since 2020, signals South Africa's commitment to growing diplomatic relations with Ukraine.

Within the first six months of 2025, the year of South Africa's G20 Presidency, our country will also host the South Africa-European Union summit. South Africa is the only partner in Africa amongst the EU's 10 bilateral strategic partnerships.

The AFCFTA will also accelerate manufacturing and industrial capacity on our continent.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa continues to lead the 7th Administration in strengthening all key political and trade ties, working in solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world in Palestine and Western Sahara, while advocating for peaceful resolution of conflicts around the globe, South Africa will maintain a foreign policy that is informed by solidarity, peace, equality, human rights and sustainable development for the benefit of all.

This is the responsibility that President Ramaphosa will continue to exercise without any undue pressure and in line with South Africa's national sovereign interest.

Government and industry’s efforts to control animal disease spread must be lauded

Location: News

Government and industry’s efforts to control animal disease spread must be lauded

By Wandile Sihlobo

The past three years have been challenging for South Africa's livestock and poultry industry because of the spread of animal diseases. Throughout this period, we have had various cases of foot and mouth (FMD) disease in cattle, African swine fever in pigs, and avian influenza in poultry. While animal disease outbreaks are not unique to South Africa and indeed common across the world, South Africa's challenges have intensified in the recent past.

In 2022, six of South Africa's nine provinces reported foot and mouth disease outbreaks. This was the first time in the country's history that the disease had spread this wide. The challenging place the country found itself in prompted the government and industry stakeholders to increase their focus on strengthening farm biosecurity controls and surveillance.

Other interventions that are still underway include efforts to improve South Africa's veterinary and related support services (mainly the laboratories) that deal with vaccine production needs.

The cost of diseases in the livestock industry is not only felt through loss of livestock, but also through reduced exports to the world market in times of outbreaks. For example, South Africa's beef exports volume for 2022 was down by 16% year-on-year to 26 881 tonnes, according to data from Trade Map. This decline was primarily due to the temporary closures of various export markets following the outbreak of FMD disease in South Africa.

Furthermore, the sheep industry was also affected by the 2022 outbreak. China, a significant market for South African wool, suspended imports. The impact of those temporary closures is visible on export volumes of wool. For example, in 2022, South Africa's wool exports fell by 19% year-on-year to 42 239 tonnes. The major decline in volume was in the Chinese market.

Livestock and poultry account for roughly half of agriculture's gross value added. Moreover, livestock also significantly contributes to the inclusion of black farmers in commercial agricultural production. For example, the National Agricultural Marketing Council estimates suggest that black farmers account for 18%, 13% and 34% of wool, mohair and cattle production, respectively.

Therefore, the prevalence of animal disease outbreaks in the past few years slowed South Africa's commercial agriculture, export ambition and transformation in the industry.

In 2023, as the government and industry continued with its work to control the spread of animal diseases, we saw a slight recovery in beef and wool exports. For example, South Africa's beef exports recovered slightly in 2023, up 3% year-on-year to 27 675 tonnes.

For wool, the engagements between the South African and Chinese authorities to reassure the Chinese traders of the safety measures in place to ensure that there is no spread of disease led to the resumption of exports. In 2023, South Africa's wool exports recovered 18% year-on-year to 49 715 tonnes.

On 25 October 2024, the Department of Agriculture released even more positive news, which we believe will further support the recovery path of the industry. The department announced that the "foot and mouth disease outbreak, occurred during 2021-2022, has been successfully resolved in the North West, Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga provinces. These provinces, initially impacted by the outbreak, have now completed comprehensive testing of animals on quarantined farms. The results indicate that the foot and mouth disease virus is no longer present”.

The department added that "the World Organisation for Animal Health has confirmed that the outbreak in these regions has officially been closed. However, it is important to note that the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces remain affected by foot and mouth disease outbreaks. Encouragingly, no new signs of the disease have been reported in these two provinces over the past month”.

This is admirable progress and further supports South Africa's ambition of being a global player in red meat exports. The successful path to the export markets involves addressing the biosecurity challenges. Continuous efforts must be made to address the remaining challenges in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, the South African government must work collaboratively with the private sector to revive the efficiency of the Agricultural Research Council and the Onderstepoort Biological Products, which are key for vaccine production and various livestock disease management matters.

Food poisoning incidents not related to school nutrition programme

Location: News

Food poisoning incidents not related to school nutrition programme

The Department of Basic Education says it is concerned at the increasing reports of food poisoning involving children of school-going age.

“These incidents of food poisoning have disrupted teaching and learning as the majority of the cases affected learners during school hours. As a result, school time has been directed towards assisting the affected learners with medical attention,” the Department of Basic Education said in a statement.

In addition, the psycho-social impact of such incidents continues to have negative effects on both the learners and teachers.

The department said schools and communities in general are places where young children should feel and be safe.

“In all the cases the learners have consumed items bought from vendors and spaza shops in and around schools. The Department of Basic Education appreciates the work being done by various government departments and other organs of state to address the matter,” the department said.

It said although some media reports have incorrectly attributed the food poisoning incidents to the National School Nutrition Programme, no evidence has been found in this regard.

The National School Nutrition Programme is a key government programme aligned with the National Development Plan 2030 to address hunger, malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.

“It is a key pillar of Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) that seeks to address barriers to teaching and learning, to enhance the learning capacity and give access to education for learners in targeted public primary, secondary and identified special schools.

“The programme provides nutritious meals to 9.7 million learners on school days. The total budget is R9.8 billion allocated for the 2024/25 financial year,” the department said.

The department emphasised that there is strict adherence to five basic hygiene practices which are:

  • Keep clean,
  • Separate cooked and raw food,
  • Cook thoroughly,
  • Keep food at a safe temperature, and
  • Use safe water and raw materials.

“With the use of these basic principles the system is able to provide safe healthy meals to more than nine million learners daily without an incident that threatens lives,” it said.

According to the department, the media reports highlight a greater number of allegations that hundreds of school children suffer from food poisoning and increased incidents of hospitalisation.

“It must be made clear that many incidents experienced relate to food items bought through informal vendors. The other major factor is that school camps, tuck shops or vendors do not align with NSNP food basket and guidelines due to shifted area of responsibility.

“In order to address this, the School Governing Body and School Management Teams should play a leading role in ensuring that healthy food snacks and beverages are sold to learners,” the department said.

While the school has no jurisdiction over the street vendors, the school community should make an effort to keep a database of individuals selling food and beverage items on or near the school premises.

“This means that the entire community where the school is located should take responsibility for the wellbeing of its children, especially if the items consumed are sold outside school premises.

“The school should offer to hold meetings with school-based tuck shop operators on the nutritional value of different products being sold.”

The department urged parents, guardians and caregivers to be on high alert and to monitor the food items children consume and most importantly to verify the source of such items.

It conveyed condolences to the families of the children who have passed away as a result of consuming poisoned food items.

Communities are encouraged to report suspected cases of poisoning to the municipality and the South African Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman on 0800 029 999. – SAnews.gov.za

Home Affairs issues first-ever certificates recognising Muslim marriages

The Department of Home Affairs has issued the first-ever South African marriage certificates officially recognising the “type of marriage” as “Muslim”.

After changes were made to the department’s internal systems, Home Affairs has granted the first batch of 33 marriage certificates for Muslim marriages for the first time in the South African history.

“Members of the Islamic faith community have made extraordinary contributions to South Africa’s history for more than 350 years,” said Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber.

“While it comes hundreds of years later than it should have, it is a personal honour for me to preside as Minister over the granting of marriage certificates recognising Muslim marriages.

“This is a major step towards enhancing the dignity of this faith community and reflects the ongoing commitment of Home Affairs to deliver dignity to all our valued clients. It is also an expression of nation building, and a celebration of South Africa’s unity in diversity,” Schreiber said.

He said Home Affairs stands ready to assist all clients who similarly wish to have a Muslim marriage formally recognised.

"Additionally, we have enabled our systems to retroactively recognise Muslim marriages. At a fee of R20, clients can request a reprint of their marriage certificate specifying that they wish to change the wording to reflect that it is a Muslim marriage,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

Police Committee Chairperson Says Increase in Mass Killings Highlights Inadequacies With Crime Intelligence

Location: News

Republic of South Africa: The Parliament

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, is concerned by the continued increase in mass murders in South Africa, which highlights inadequacies within the South African Police's Crime Intelligence unit. The Chairperson's comments follow the two recent mass killings in the Western Cape, where seven people were killed in Bishop Lavis on Thursday and five people were killed in Atlantis.

“The increase in mass killings in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape point to the need to capacitate the crime intelligence services both with funding and human capital that will enable the unit to proactively prevent these crimes from happening. The committee has consistently stressed the need to properly capacitate the intelligence and detective units as they are potent tools that can be used in the fight against crime,” Mr Cameron said.

Also, the committee has reiterated the need for collaboration with provincial and local governments to ensure that these spheres put in place focused strategies to deal with emerging crime trends in their communities. “It is for this reason that we wholeheartedly welcomed the intentions of the Draft National Policing Policy, which highlighted the importance of collaboration, and these murders provide an opportunity to share investigative capacity. Also, the formation and training of specialised units to tackle crimes like gang violence in the Western Cape should be considered,” Mr Cameron said.

The Chairperson said the increase in mass murders provides an opportunity to implement several Safer Cities initiatives, which were signed between the SAPS and provincial and local governments. “The signed agreement has established the necessary framework to fight crime. It is now time to activate the plans and ensure that criminality is confronted head-on,” the Chairperson said.

Mr Cameron also called for the SAPS to leave no stone unturned in investigating these mass shootings and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Social Development Month creating a caring society

Social Development Month creating a caring society

By Precious Mupenzi

As we celebrate Social Development Month in October, it is essential to reflect on the remarkable contributions of the Department of Social Development (DSD) over the past 30 years.

DSD has consistently been a pillar of support during South Africa’s most challenging times, addressing the evolving social landscape and stepping in during moments of crisis to assist vulnerable populations.

During the transition to democracy, South Africa faced significant political unrest, characterised by violence and social disruptions that left many children orphaned.

The DSD played a vital role in providing assistance, ensuring that support services were available to help families rebuild their lives. This commitment laid a strong foundation for the department’s ongoing mission to protect and empower individuals across the country.

The emergence of the HIV and AIDS epidemic presented a significant challenge for South Africa.

In response, DSD took a proactive role, implementing programmes to provide care and support for affected orphans, ensuring that no child was left behind amid the devastation.

These efforts underscored the department’s commitment to social welfare during such critical times. It was within this context that the Risiha Programme was established. “Risiha” is a Xitsonga word meaning “resilience”.

This community-based prevention and early intervention programme is designed to support vulnerable children, helping them transition from vulnerability to resilience.
Central to the Risiha Programme is the delivery of the Core Package of Services (CPS), which addresses the diverse needs of these children.

More recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the DSD rose to the occasion by administering the Special Relief Distress (SRD) Grant to assist millions of South Africans facing financial hardship due to lockdowns and economic disruptions.

Alongside this, the DSD, through its agency, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), continues to disburse social grants, which provide critical financial support to those grappling with the compounded effects of poverty, unemployment and inequality -- issues that were further exacerbated by the pandemic.

Social grants have been a cornerstone of the DSD’s efforts to support vulnerable populations. Over the years, these grants have evolved into a vital lifeline for many families, with some relying on them as their sole source of income.

Crucially, social grants serve not only as financial support but also as tools for child protection and educational advancement. Programmes such as the Child Support Grant, Foster Care Grant, and Care Dependency Grant play significant roles in keeping children in school and bridging the educational gap for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

For instance, the 2023 matric results reveal that among 897 775 grade 12 learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate exams, 543 786 were social grant recipients.

Notably, 202 256 of these students achieved a Bachelor Pass, and 62 of the top 110 performing learners were social grant beneficiaries, contributing to a total of 160 326 distinctions.

Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe, recently described the DSD as the "breadwinner of the country," a testament to its crucial role in supporting and nurturing the nation.

Additionally, the department plays a vital role in supporting non-profit organisations through funding and the rendering of services on behalf of the government.

DSD programmes actively aim to curb the scourge of social ills, such as gender-based violence & femicide and substance abuse, by providing resources and initiatives that empower communities, promote rehabilitation, and foster safe environments for vulnerable citizens.

The department has received numerous accolades, including the International Social Security Association (ISSA) Good Practice Award for Social Security Programmes in Africa in 2023. This recognition highlights the effectiveness and impact of South Africa's social welfare programmes.

International bodies, including the United Nations, have praised South Africa’s progressive social policies and the alignment of its constitution with the rights of children and other vulnerable groups.

At the heart of DSD services are our unsung heroes who are Social Workers. These dedicated professionals work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to address and resolve complex family issues. When a child is in conflict with the law, Social Workers collaborate closely with law enforcement to ensure fair treatment and support.

The Social Development Month campaign seeks to showcase the work of the DSD which is the backbone of creating a society that cares for the most vulnerable.

SA well placed to be major hub in clean tech value chain

SA well placed to be major hub in clean tech value chain

South Africa is well placed to become a hub for components and equipment manufacturing in the clean technology value chain, including battery technologies for energy storage, electric mobility, material handling and a range of other applications.

This is according to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield, who addressed the opening of the R150 million Balancell state-of-the-art Gigafactory in Cape Town.

Balancell is a future-focused, innovative technology business that develops smart batteries designed to manage and protect themselves, and report their use and condition remotely.

“The South African government is working closely with the industry to identify opportunities to deepen the battery technology value chain and to position South Africa as a manufacturing hub on the African continent.

“A recent benchmarking study, supported by the World Bank Group, shows that South Africa is a competitive manufacturing destination, and offers a compelling value proposition for companies in this sector, as demonstrated here,” Whitfield said.

To support these ambitions, Whitfield said there was a number of policies and incentives in place that will enable the growth of this key sector. He said Cabinet has already approved the New Energy Vehicle White paper, setting out the objectives for this sector.

“Being able to witness an investment from homegrown companies in this sector is truly inspiring. Balancell’s investment of R150 million in this factory is not only directly in line with the strategic priorities of the Government of National Unity, but also a demonstration of the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that defines many South African businesses.

“We are motivated by the company’s prospects for growth and further job creation in the coming years. The 75 existing jobs created in this [Gigafactory], supporting more than 1 500 indirect jobs, is a clear indication of the multiplier effect that can be achieved by strengthening and growing the manufacturing sector,” Whitfield said.

A Gigafactory is a huge factory that produces very large numbers of batteries for electric vehicles.

Whitfield highlighted the importance of building a strong base of skilled South Africans.

“Expanding industry partnerships with leading universities and research institutions to enhance local research, development and testing of components is critical to the industry. I am, therefore, encouraged that you are already working with the Nelson Mandela and Stellenbosch Universities, as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,” the Deputy Minister said.

He described the opening of the Gigafactory as an affirmation of the importance of building industrial capacity and working together to achieve the shared vision of South Africa being a global player in the battery value chain.

He further said the investment is an example of South African resilience, innovation and entrepreneurship. – SAnews.gov.za

Have a sip of butternut coffee

By More Matshediso

A Bloemfontein-based entrepreneur, who established a healthy alternative to coffee, is revolutionising the agro-processing industry through her thriving business.

Chantelle de Bruyn (34) is the owner of Buttercup Farmhouse, a business that she registered in 2019 with initial plans to manufacture vegetable spices.

The business is currently selling its signature Cucurbita Latte (vegetable coffee made from butternut) and has plans to expand to produce supplement shakes, snack bars, vegetable ice cream, and a tea range.

She is equipped with product development skills acquired through a food science course she completed through the United States (US) Embassy and Consulates in South Africa.

She also completed the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development Programme at the Johannesburg Business School.

“This skill has been instrumental in creating innovation and ensuring that the taste and health benefits of our products align with what our customers need through the value chain,” she explained.

De Bruyn has also partnered with the University of the Free State, which is assisting her with research and product development for her products.

The business currently employs 11 workers, including four permanent and seven part-time employees. It hopes to create more job opportunities as it expands its product offering.

“Currently, you can buy the products at Food Lovers Market stores in the Western Cape, Centurion in Gauteng, and Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal. Online orders will be available in November,” she said.

She has plans to reach global consumers and said the business has received support from the Free State Provincial Government since its inception and received a R50 000 Grant from the National Development Agency (NYDA) to purchase its first equipment.

The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs has also assisted the business to purchase additional equipment and allowed it to participate in various trade shows.

She added that it also receives support from global investors including interest from the African Women in Trade Group in Germany, who are exploring the opportunity to distribute the products in the United Kingdom and in the US.

Achievements
Buttercup Farmhouse already has a few accolades under its belt. In 2022, it received an award for being the Top Youth Agro Processor from the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development.

In the same year, De Bruyn was crowned the best agro developer and most innovative business through the Cwena awards.
The business was also the Overall Winner in Business of the Year by Action Coach for 2021/2022.

Buttercup also won a business plan competition with the American Women Academy with its U.S. Agency for International Development and, sponsored by the US Embassy in 2021, won the Standard Bank Top Women Top 5 Award in 2022, and the Most Innovative Business Award through the South African Awards in 2023.

She was also the runner-up in the Forty over 40 Awards in 2022 and won second place in the Seeds of Change competition in 2023.

“We have also gained recognition from the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York in 2023,” she explained.

Farming background

De Bruyn is also a small-scale farmer who specialises in crop production.

“I have always loved farming, and it’s a vital part of my business. I started farming in 2015 when the Agri-Parks were established in the Free State and I served on the executive committee where I represented youth in agriculture.

“Today we grow crops like butternut that are essential to our vegetable coffee production and have partnered with external farmers to help us grow our butternuts, farming allows us to maintain high-quality ingredients for our products,” she explained.

Hlabisa leads delegation to meet SA’s kings and queens

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, is leading a government delegation in the first meeting with kings, queens and principal traditional leaders from across the country.

This three-day engagement began this morning in Pretoria, and follows a meet and greet with Their Majesties, which was attended by Hlabisa and CoGTA Deputy Ministers, Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe and Dr Namane Dickson Masemola, in August.

Hlabisa is accompanied by several Ministers and Deputy Ministers, who are part of the Task Team on Traditional Leadership.

The delegation includes the Members of the Executive Council (MECs) of CoGTA, the national and provincial chairpersons of the House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, as well as senior government officials.

“Government recognises and supports the critical role of traditional leadership institutions in South Africa’s constitutional democracy and communities, especially in relation to prioritising development in rural and traditional areas,” CoGTA said.

According to the department, the recognition of kings, queens and principal traditional leaders is regulated by sec 7 (1)(a) (i) and (ii) of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act No 3 of 2019 (the TKLA).

Kings, queens and principal traditional leaders have a customary role to play as leaders of traditional communities.  They also have a role in nation-building and social cohesion through the promotion of peace, stability and unity within the traditional communities under their jurisdiction.

Furthermore, the department explained that the establishment of a Forum of South African Majesties will ensure a continuous interface between Their Majesties and government, in aid of seamless coordination, particularly on issues of mutual interest and inclusive development.

“The institution of traditional leadership continues to serve as a reliable and valuable compass of society and the development of the nation.

“The engagement will receive progress reports from government on matters raised previously by Their Majesties, ranging from land reform, rural infrastructure, socio-economic development, as well as the preservation of culture and heritage, among others,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Firearms recovered in Sabie

Firearms recovered in Sabie

An AK-47, a .38 Special Revolver and live ammunition have been seized in a police operation in Mpumalanga.

The firearms and ammunition were seized in Operation Safer Festive Season/Vala Umgodi on Thursday.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the discovery was made following intelligence received about suspected illegal mining activities, thanks to members from the Lydenburg K9 Unit, in collaboration with Phoenix Security members.

The information indicated that suspected illegal miners were somehow involved in a gun battle in Sabie.

Upon receiving some details, law enforcement agencies swiftly coordinated a plan to decisively deal with the situation.

As the team approached the area, the group of about 20 suspected miners began to retreat, dropping the two firearms and a large quantity of ammunition, as they ran to avert arrest.

“It was during this time when the astute members confiscated the said items. An inquiry case has been opened and the suspects involved in the incident are still at large.

"The SAPS has since launched a manhunt to locate and bring these individuals to justice,” SAPS said.

Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has reassured the public that the police, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, are committed to maintaining increased visibility in areas where illegal mining activities persist.

The General further emphasized that efforts to address illegal mining will continue until all illegal mining activities come to a halt.

"We... will continue with these operations and even exert more pressure while assessing our impact," said Mkhwanazi. – SAnews.gov.za

FTSEZ Accelerates Industrialization in South Africa

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

The Fetakgomo Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ) in South Africa has joined the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference – taking place November 4-8, 2024 - as a bronze sponsor. With a vision to become a globally-recognized center of excellence for sustainable solutions in mineral beneficiation, the FTSEZ integrates energy and mining projects to advance industrialization. AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 supports this goal by offering a platform for dialogue and deal-signing.

The FTSEZ currently has 10 investment and development partners, with 8 projects in the pipeline. The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism allocated R35 million for the development of various projects as part of the industrial zone in the financial year 2021/2022, with the funding continuing to support project development. At AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, representatives from the FTSEZ will outline project progress and future investment opportunities.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit http://www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

The FTSEZ is a multi-faceted industrial hub that is poised to benefit over one million people in the Limpopo province of South Africa. As an industrial cluster, the zone integrates the upstream and downstream mineral value chains with associated energy projects, offering a centralized hub for mineral beneficiation. In the mining and mineral beneficiation sector, the FTSEZ comprises fuel cell plants, a platinum refinery, stainless steel magnetite processing plants as well as facilities to manufacture fabricated metal products. The industrial zone also features manufacturing facilities such as machinery, rubber products and mining equipment and components.

To support mining operations within the province, the FTSEZ is developing a pipeline of energy projects. Aimed at providing a clean and affordable source of power, these projects comprise solar, battery storage, biodiesel and hydrogen facilities. This diverse offering not only supports mining activities across the entire value chain but underscores how the integration of various sources of energy can support economic growth and industrialization in Africa.

Beyond energy projects, the FTSEZ features various water, road and rail projects. Completed projects include the R70 million Steelpoort Wastewater Treatment Works project and the R65 million Steelpoort Water Treatment project – the latter of which has plans to increase treatment capacity. Projects under construction include the R121 million upgrade to the Ga-Malekana Water Treatment facility; the R2 billion construction of the R37 and R555 main roads; the Steelpoort railway sliding development; the R1.6 million Regional External Master Plan; the R70 million Steel Bridge upgrade; and the SEZ human settlement scoping report. To date, the technical stage for the Ga-Malekana Water Treatment project has been approved.

“The development of industrial zones such as FTSEZ will not only provide a centralized location for mining operations in South Africa but integrate various other segments of the economy. FTSEZ is a testament to how merging key sectors such as energy, mining and agro-processing can drive economic growth and industrialization. By adopting similar development plans, other countries in Africa can fuel the development of various industries while creating jobs and boosting skills development,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 provides an opportunity for potential investors and project developers to engage with FTSEZ representatives. Through the zone's bronze sponsorship, FTSEZ will provide an overview of major projects, potential expansion opportunities and strategies for replicating the zone in other provinces.
